State Road Plan Promises Rt. 7 Relief

Today, Rt. 7 in and around Leesburg is known for its rush-hour congestion, but in just a few years it should be a busy construction zone. The draft Six-Year Improvement Plan slated to be adopted by the Commonwealth Transportation Board next month includes $123 million to improve traffic flow between Belmont Ridge Road and Clarkes Gap.

Construction of the Sycolin Road overpass on the Leesburg Bypass could be underway in two years. The $21.6 million project would remove a choke-point traffic light and eliminate one of the county's most crash-prone intersections. The bridge will link Sycolin Road south of the Bypass with Plaza Street on the north. Motorists who now use that intersection to get on the bypass will instead use the Dulles Greenway, with no toll charged between the Tolbert Land and bypass ramps.

During 2014 and 2015, the plan calls for construction of two other Rt. 7 projects.

East of Leesburg, work will begin on Rt. 7/Belmont Ridge Road interchange. Along with the Sycolin Road bridge, county leaders identified this $72 million project as a top priority. The state funding addresses a need for which little funding from developers' proffers is available. The Ashburn Village Boulevard interchange is slated for construction by the developers of One Loudoun. The draft Six-Year Plan also includes a $25 million project to build the Lexington Drive overpass near Potomac Farms during the 2015-16 timeframe. With those projects, Rt. 7 traffic lights would be eliminated between Battlefield Parkway in Leesburg and CountrySide Boulevard in Sterling.

West of Leesburg, the state plan schedules construction of a climbing lane for westbound Rt. 7 between Leesburg and Rt. 9 at Clarkes Gap to begin in 2014-15. Engineering work is underway for the $29.5 million project, which is aimed at eliminating afternoon rush hour congestion that typically slows westbound traffic flow around much of the Leesburg Bypass.

There is more for Loudoun in the draft plan:

• A $12.3 million safety project on Rt. 15 through Lucketts is slated for construction in 2017-18.

• Cascades Parkway gets a new traffic signal and intersection improvements in 2012-13.

• The Rt. 621/Ryan Road intersection, the site of several serious, and fatal, crashes, gets improvements in 2013-14, with the $4 million project bolstered by $2 million in federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds.

• Safety upgrades to Gum Spring Road are planned in 2015.

• The paving of Sands Road between Rt. 726 and Rt. 710 is scheduled for 2012-13.

• The paving of Taylor Road between Wooded Hollow Drive and Rt. 709 also is planned in 2012-13.

• Construction of a pedestrian/bike path along Ryan Road in Ashburn, a project requested by county supervisors, is scheduled for 2013-14.

One project not funded in the draft plan is the $19.3 million traffic calming program in Hillsboro. Engineering is underway, but no construction funds are provided before FY18, when construction is scheduled to begin.

Do you have any new info on the extension of Nokes past Pacific to connect through to Glouchester at Lo.Co.Pkwy? (near Redskins Park).

Last I heard, this was a top priority too - and they were hoping to using state money to jump start the project while waiting on development proffers.

Completion of this would reduce the choke point that all of Ashburn encounters on Waxpool at Pacific/Broderick/LCP. It would provide an alternate northern route into Ashburn off 28. All that's then missing is the LCP / Old Ox Road connection for the southern end.

Yes, I go there all the time, but this specific project isn't listed. I guess it's not 'mega' enough.

It's actually not that big of a task - build a road through some trees. Turn a 'T' intersection into a '+'. Drastically relieve traffic congestion on the Waxpool /28 corridor.
