Where are you going to work? I live in Lovettsville and a commute to Sterling at 7:30 in the morning takes about 40 minutes, getting to Tysons over an hour. But you can get a brand new house with a yard for as little as 340k. You can't touch a townhouse in a safe neighborhood in fairfax for that price. Good Luck

If you have enough money saved, and a good stable job - now is the time to buy a house. My understanding from friends in the industry is that the real estate market in Loudoun has reached a point where the buyer can almost name their own price on a home. This is mainly due to all the forclosures due to the economic crunch over the past two years.

Probably the same pros and cons as townhouse vs. detached in any location...

Of course, they do make some pretty big ones out here if you dig around. We're in a townhouse that's bigger than almost all the detached SFH's right down the street.

Purchased a condo in Loudoun around 1997... should have spent the extra for a townhouse. Moved/upgraded to a Loudoun townhouse in 2001. Should have paid the extra for single-family home. Purchased/moved to a single family house in Ashburn in 2003... where, we remain. Like the area and in it for the longer term. Have a good house that we're proud of. From experience and best advice to offer-- purchase a house over a townhouse if, you can afford. There are some exceptions and comes down to making the best purchase in this housing market. Generally; a single family home purchase if, well-negotiated, will earn better equity in the long-run over a townhouse. Buy-up/buy-smart as best you can afford, to avoid buyer-remorse. We bought the lesser, and would have been better off buying more.
