Sugarland Run

Hey guys. My wife and I just moved into one of the older homes in the Sugarland Run neighborhood. New here, just wanted to say hello.

I've noticed that there are usually cops sitting on S. Cottage Rd. looking to catch folks that putter down that road at anything faster than around 25mph...is this normal? Kinda seems like overkill for a residential road.

Yes it's fairly normal. There is a police station next to the 7-11 in sugarland. On occasion you will see a sobriety check point too.

It's not a police station idiot, it's the office for the community resource officer assigned to Sugarland.

First of all, Loudoun County doesn't have police. We are served by our Sheriff's Officeas required by the Virginia Constitution. IF Loudoun would do something very stupid and create a Police Department, the Sheriff's Office would still have to exist.

The thing is, the Commonwealth doesn't subsidize the Police, but they do a Sheriff's Office. Thus, if we were to make a Police Department, as Scott York wants (because he hates Sheriff Simpson) the taxpayer would be screwed.

Also, the Sheriff reports to the PUBLIC, the VOTERS! A Chief of Police reports to the Board of Supervisors, as they hire and fire them. The PUBLIC is much better served by a Sheriff's Office as they will not become abusive. If they do, the voters vote them out.

I believe what you are seeing is your COMMUNITY RESOURCE DEPUTY. Sugerland Run actually donates money to the Sheriff's Office for additional coverage. It is very likely the same Deputy all the time.

If you have a problem, like speeders on your street, you go to your HOA or to the Sheriff's Department and fill out a form. The Sheriff's Office will put additional enforcement on that problem.

I suggest you don't speed. Once you have Virginia tags and a Loudoun County sticker...

In general, most Deputies won't give you a tick until you are 10 or even 15 MPH over the limit. Still, there is less tolerance in residential areas, especially those with 25 MPH speed limits.

Wow. A bit of overkill, but thanks for the response.
