The list of Republicans running for this year’s county elections is set, and notably absent from the list is Verne Dickerson, a Lovettsville resident who had been campaigning for the party’s nomination for Sheriff.
Dickerson posted an announcement on his Facebook page overnight Friday announcing his decision to pull out of the race.
“I stand by everything I have ever said during my campaign for sheriff of Loudoun County,” Dickerson wrote in the post. “I stand by my faith, conviction to integrity and values. However, due to personal reasons, I am withdrawing from the race. Kathy is supportive of this decision. I give my full support to Mike Chapman. I will remain active in the LCRC and will steadfastly support our other fine candidates. Thank you all for your support.”
Chapman will face off against Ron Speakman for the Republican nomination during the Loudoun County Republican Committee Convention July 23 at Tuscarora High School. The winner will face incumbent Sheriff Steve Simpson, an independent, in the Nov. 8 general election.
In throwing his support behind Chapman, Dickerson wrote the following on his Facebook page the morning of July 2:
“I am not severing my involvement with this county, only changing course a little. I urge [each of you] that had signed up as delegates for me, to remain committed through the convention, and now vote for Mike Chapman as Sheriff.”
Chapman has also received the endorsement of Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman.
