Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Hey, guys! Have you heard of the "Old pictures of Fairfax county, love em!" thread? Well I'm making a LoCo edition of the thread, where you can post old pics of the county... pretty self explanatory!
Also, this is not a copy, it's just another edition. Have fun!
Yes and no. The airport straddles the line between Fairfax & Loudoun counties. The main terminal and most of the support buildings around the terminal, as well as the center and western-most north-south runways, and the diagonal runway, are all pretty much in Loudoun County, while the eastern-most runway, as well as the Air & Space Museum and a lot of the southern portion of the airport property, are in Fairfax County. The Toll Road / Route 28 intersection is pretty much fully within Loudoun County as well; you pass the "county line" sign on 28 south of the interchange.
Fairfax claims the airport, but when you really look at it, most of the airport property that is in Fairfax is empty space, and the "meat & potatoes" of airport operations (terminals, passenger services, hangars, hotels, etc.) is actually in Loudoun.
I know a guy who is an MWAA cop, and he says it is a real pain for them when they write tickets or make arrests, since they have to carry ticket books and court rules for Loudoun, Fairfax and Arlington counties, depending on where they are at any given time!

National Bank Note issued throught the Peoples National Bank of Leesburg (Now the Lightfoot restaurant). Under the National Banking Acts various local banks were designated National Banks. They had a charter from the Federal Government to issue federal currency. It was printed in Washington, but signed by the bank's officials and printed with their name on it.

Mighty Midget Kitchen in Leesburg, VA. The original location at branch/split of E. Market St. & Loudoun St. SE for many years (1960s/1970s) that we recall. Original location is now present day Mom's Apple Pie establishment.

I wonder if that's the orignal Mighty Midget, or the one they found to replace it after the original was smashed by a car? Thanks, though. I knew it was in that area, but hadn't been able to find a picture of it in the orignal location. Online info says these were made from surplus B-29 fuselage sections; I still say they were B-25 parts.
Holly Farms Fried Chicken Restaurant Leesburg, VA. Known (briefly) for their potato wedge fries and apple pie dessert offering. Present day location for photo is a Roy Rogers at S. King St./Catoctin in the Safeway parking lot. Roy Rogers is another fossil that left most of NoVa and still exists (somehow?) at two locations in Leesburg, VA.

My friend's grandparents used to own the Mighty Midget when it was located there in Leesburg. Is there any way I can get a high quality image from you?
anyone remember Pangle's store? Or Pengel's or Pengle's or Pangel's? A mile or two north of rt. 50, just across the Loudon-Fairfax line. All of us Chantilly HS underage kids used to buy our beer there. Back then it was way out in the dark sticks. Lots of development there now.
