What exactly is Franconia? I have lived in Springfield for ever since I can remember, but I've never understand The diffence between Springfield and Franconia.

I think it is on the east side of I-95 because Old Keene Mill changes names to Franconia, but Springfield Mall is on the east side of 95.

Franconia gets its name from a 191 acre farm purched in 1859. The farm's name was "Frankhonia". Part of the farm was sold to the railroad and a station was built on Fleet Drive. That station served as a post office and then burned. The post office was then relocated to somewhere on Franconia Road.

There use to be a hardware store where Paradisio Restaurante is now. I remember the Post Office next to the hardware store or attached to it back in the early '70's. Franconia is or was a town of Virginia.

Franconia was never a town. Right now it is a CDP and no more, and this nice road sign seems to indicate it was no more than a named area.
