The Yuppies are Coming!

I'm amazed how many people on here are racists against Hispanics and Blacks. People say that the new Town Center will fail and will just be another center for violence and gangs. And others are constantly talking about the area being bad in general and not worth living in.

Well, we didn't read this before we moved here. And now we live in Springfield and we're making changes! We are fixing up our house and yard. We are becoming active in our community. We are looking to join the civic organizations and to support local businesses. We speak multiple languages and think that it is a good thing! And we are promoting the area to others like us.

To all the old, racist, ultra-conservative people who seem to enjoy bashing on this area...beware. The young, liberal Yuppies are coming. And we will take over. Just like we did in NoMA, Arlington, Falls Church, and Alexandria. Your property taxes will increase. Your xenophobia will be challenged. And your box stores will be replaced with high priced boutiques and minority owned businesses.

Viva la revolution de Springfield!

It is refreshing to hear most of what you wrote. Not sure how much was sarcastic and how much was serious but you are spot on about a few things. Springfield is far from the ghetto a lot of these inbreeds try and claim it is. The incident they always go back to when justifying their rage is the lady who was taken from the parking garage and died in a car wreck:

From Wash Post-

The kidnapping and death of Barbara J. “Bobbie” Bosworth from the Springfield Mall in 2008 was one of the most horrific crimes in this region in recent memory. An innocent woman walking to her car on a Saturday afternoon was abducted at gunpoint, driven to Prince William County, forced into a convenience store to buy beer for her teenage attackers, and then killed when they crashed her car into a tree.

Not to take away form the tragedy but she died in the wreck but the way people talk on here it was as if they pulled her eyeballs out of socket, tattoo'd MS-13 signs on her and then hacked her to death with a dull machete. BTW - the gun the used to kidnap her was fake.

Yes there is a run down neighborhood across Franconia Road from the mall but what some assholes on here fail to understand is that companies don't throw HALF A BILLION BUCKS into a property without a good idea of what the future holds for these types of run down neighborhoods and he surrounding areas. The mall is also a 10-15 year project. Everyone on here jumps to this asinine conclusion that the mall is the same as it was before and nothing has changed yada yada yada. Once they build the high rises in the parking lots and build a 5 star hotel where the Best Western and Kaiser buildings are maybe they will see the light. These fools will complain about anything. If they FBI HQ is moved to Springfield I guess they too will have been fools since all their employees will get murdered in the parking lots.

Don't get fooled into thinking these idiots who post here are representative of the area. I am far from liberal and most of the people in the area are not liberal ether. Maybe you are just trying to get the scum to bite but don't assume the few idiots on here are representative of the area.

Not a Yuppie,

Refreshing to read a post by someone who isn't a racist or pessimist. I actually figured the majority of people on here must all be teenagers, at least developmentally if not physically. There are way too many racist posts and gossipy discussions about random people around Fairfax county. It is exactly like dealing with high school kids who talk about all the other kids that they hate and why. Its an anonymous "shock and awe" approach to a community message board, which I find juvenile and inappropriate.

Most of what I said was serious and not sarcastic. We are fixing up our house and yard, looking to join civic organizations, paying attention to local political campaigns, and trying to support local businesses. We do embrace minorities, don't fear having lower income people around, and absolutely abhor racists. We don't really care if someone is conservative or liberal, as long as they are respectful of others and open to differing opinions.

Most of all, we are proud of what Springfield is trying to become. We appreciate the new mall and love seeing the shopping plazas around the area being upgraded. And we are certain that this area is on the edge of a massive turn around and becoming a new center for young families who are looking to find a sense of community. The only thing that still needs to change...are the people who act like its all a lost cause.

S.Y. - The area does have a large illegal population mainly centered on Backlick Rd near the Burger King and on Commerce St. It is an issue we should all be concerned with due to over crowding in housing and schools. The housing issues really put a damper on my neighborhood a few years ago but thankfully the county put together a task force that had a major impact on this issue. There were houses that they raided that had 4 fridges, 4 washing machines, 4 dryers etc with rosters of the tenants and the countries they came from. This obviously strains the utility systems we have not to mention schools which seem to always be complaining about not having enough resources. The people on here for the most part only concentrate on crime. I haven't noticed any more crime than other areas and have never been uncomfortable under any circumstances in the area. Most are hard working and want to live a better life. It pisses me off to know they are here illegally but in the end our government holds us powerless again any changes. But that doesn't make me think of them as demons and goblins coming to get me in my sleep (or when I am at the mall).

I brought up the run down neighborhood across from the mall because it is a blight and hurts everyone's property value. I too have put a ton of money into my house because I believe this area is due for a turn around. One thing no one on here ever talks about is how much we have been missing out on sales tax receipts. The mall was essentially shuttered for 4 years and prior to that was a dump that no one shopped at. I believe the foot print of the mall and parking lot is over 70 acres. Think about how much in taxes we gave away to Tysons, Pentagon City, etc that we have missed out on for at least half a decade. With those tax receipts comes more improvements to the area. Most people do not understand simple economics and they never will. It is beyond me that people think the new owners are going to let the mall go down hill. These people aren't idiots and they would be strung up by their nuts for making this move unless they had a strategic plan.

One other item people never bring up is the fact that due to the base realignment commission (BRAC) almost all of Springfield's commercial districts have been marked as a "revitalization zone" which provides special tax status to businesses in order to promote economic growth and construction. The reason we have so many hotels/extended stays in the area is because the contracting office for some sections of the military is also relocating to Belvoir. That means all the ass kissers will need to have places to stay which means more out of town money. The Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and NSA have also started moving some of their offices to Springfield which has led to the increase in extended stays.

I would like to see Paper Moon and MVC closed down. This is an embarrassment to the area and has no business being in the middle of town. I would also like the Car Title Loan building next to Dunkin Donuts closed. Those places make me sick.

I am sure not everyone agrees but I think Jeff McKay does an pretty good job working hard to turn around Springfield. I have emailed him about issues in the past and his team always gets back to me. He has a passion for this area and isn't in it to raise his political standing as far as I am concerned. We have gone to some Springfield Civic Association meetings but it doesn't seem to be a very active group. One meeting was about the apartments on Commerce. The developer presented his plans to the neighborhood and they were encouraging but nothing has taken place.....yet. Doing something about those apartments will be a major transformation for the general area and the neighborhood behind it.

Changes of magnitude never happen overnight, but they do occur. It just takes time, patience, and a few strong willed people who are willing to put in the effort to better the community.

I haven't been around the area long enough to know much about the illegal population zones you mentioned. I am certain that you are correct. But I can't imagine those complexes will be able to keep their rent levels low enough for those tenants to stay for much longer. There is just too much going on around the area and too many improvements for their property values/rents to stay so low. I already have other friends that are looking at moving to this area too. People are beginning to see this as a great place to buy. I find that encouraging and hope that the trend continues. I'd love to see this become a better mecca for families and active community members.

As for Paper Moon and MVC, I agree. Though I've never been in either one and I have no problem with the services they provide, I hate their curbside presence. They come across as gaudy and cheap establishments and become an eyesore to the neighborhood. Same for that giant ugly tower of a building next to Bob Evans by Commerce Street. It seems like it is going to fall down at any moment and the parking structure is literally held up by temporary supports. I hope they either fix it or remove it soon.

On positive notes...I love the Springfield Butcher. Also, the farmers market seems to be getting better each week. Bob and Ediths are supposedly coming to town which will add some much needed variety to the diner scene too. If you have a pet, Felix and Oscar are an awesome local pet shop. These small businesses are important and it seems like there are more locally owned stores in the pipeline.

All good things!

Looks like Bob and Edith's is going to be right next to my neighborhood! This area has been a restaurant desert aside from Mike's American Grill, Outback (played out) and Silver Diner. TGIF is so hidden you forget it exists.

Aldi's grocery store is also coming to the shopping center across from Mike's American Grill. That shopping center has been hurting for as long as I have lived here. Most of the people you see there are day laborers waiting for some tax cheat to pick them up. They have a FB page that is surprisingly very active.

Also Springfield Plaza (where Bob and Edith's will be) has a page.

I emailed Jeff McKay's office about beautifying the area. The highways and some of Franconia look post apocalyptic. I'll post any replies here.

The ugly building next to the Bob Evans should not be there. A few years ago a developer wanted to buy out everything around it and renovate the entire area into another town center but the county drug it's feet too long and they left town for another state. A huge loss but if you look at the area around that building it still looks good. Just have to demolish the building before it falls.

Businesses and government actually subsidize those "illegal" apartments along Backlick and Commerce and have done so for decades. Who do you think is feeding the labor market around here? There is a place for everyone in this community and Inpersonally do not think that boring, cookie-cutter Yuppies bring any value to anyone but themselves.

So what you are saying is that you intend to come in and replace all the stores that sell things people actually need with stores that sell pretentious crap and food at excessive prices to people who think doing manual labor is beneath them.
