Commons Shell - RIP

I got gas at the Commons Shell on Anderson Rd. tonite and was shocked to see a big sign that they are closing on June 30th. Bummer, I've been buying gas and getting car repairs done there for over ten years now. I talked to the mechanic, apparently the Mclean Commons Safeway owns the property, and they would not negotiate a new lease for the place. That sucks, the place has been a neighborhood icon for Mclean/Pimmit Hills for a LONG LONG time. According to him, Safeway plans to expand and build a new store on the land. Which is a good thing because that Safeway sucks bigtime. He also said that Safeway plans to have gas pumps (never heard of that before).

Will be sad to see the place go. Another empty storefront in McLean Commons. We'll see how long it takes for Safeway to clean up their act and bring a respectable store to the neighborhood.

FWIW, I found out today that the Safeway is also closing it's doors in July. They are building a whole new "modernized" super-grocery store on the same property. They'll be closed until late 2009 (that sucks).

I srsly think me and Inkahootz are the only ones to read this McLean board but thought I'd post the info anyway.

Thanks for posting this... I drove up to the Shell a few weeks ago and saw it closed, then drove up to the Safeway yesterday and found it closed as well! What a surprise.... sucks it's gone til 2009.

Yeah, that sucked. I used them because I can't stand blockbuster. Now I guess I'm just going to have to rely on On Demand on cable.
