This Virginia Emergency Medical Services (EMS) gun ban repeal follows repeals of regulations banning gun carry in state parks and state forests. Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave supports the regulation change.

“Ambulance crews often arrive at crime scenes before the police have things in hand,” says Van Cleave. “They are truly first responders, so why disarm them?,” he adds.

Great idea. I especially enjoyed reading some of the Examiner comments.
Most are positive but a few are your stereotyped whiners and momma's boys. You'd think in a
state where pizza delivery guys are allowed to CCW and open carry at least the paramedics should be able to.

So now when ambulances arive to a crime scene a squad of armed first responders are going to jump out of the back doors and establish a perimeter??

No, but a lot of EMTs are victims of assault and animal attacks when they arrive on scene.

Why do ambulance crews need to carry guns? Just because one guy may have needed one 42 years ago doesn't mean everyone gets to strap. I just think Virginia is entirely too restrictive when it comes to its firearms...

So, is this just your opinion? Or would you care to offer up some facts to substantiate your position?

It is a question of the impact on ability to execute tasks.

Ability may be that of an individual, crew, other unit...
Tasks may be primary, secondary, yet unknown...

The question is rich with questions.
You can only answer some of them.

Sure, Fairfax is in the take people to the hospital that have been shot by someone other then their EMS personel. They don't even let their Fire dept. personel have a gun in their personal vehicles much less on an emergency call. I am a retired first responder in Fairfax county (28yrs) and can tell you there was plenty of times i had to duck and roll from one of you drunk ass Fairfax county yuppies. Afer a few years i learned to let drunks lay on the ground in their own piss and puke until the cop's got there. I used to stand back and wait for the cop's to come and tazer their asses and laugh my ass off! Ah, the good old day's!!

Pilots carried guns for most of the history of commercial flight. In fact they were required to be armed on any flights carrying mail. NOT having armed pilots is a fairly recent development. That ended in 1987 after a USAir employee named David Burke who had been fired shot and killed his supervisor and the pilots aboard Pacific Southwest Airlines flight 1771. After that they changed the regs to ban guns and require that pilots, flight crews, and other employees flying had to go through the same screening as passengers.

Are you kidding? I'm sure the jack-booted thugs in the Fairfax County Government would love nothing more than to arm even more of their employees.

Once this passes, I imagine it won't be long until we start getting fundraising mail from our local fire departments requesting these...

Reminds me of a story that I heard while going through the Fire & Rescue Academy as a volunteer years ago. An ambulance rolled up on a scene to the sound of gunfire and the driver hit the emergency button on the CAD before exiting the unit with his partner. Dispatch immediately calls back "Ambulance 22, what is your location?" The driver replied "Under the ambulance!"

EMT tech on radio to doctor at hospital:
EMT Tech: "Doc, I have an unresponsive victim, I believe he is dead."
Doctor: "Let's not guess, are you sure he is dead?"
EMT Tech: "Hold on" *BANG* "Yes he is dead."

About time. Too many times there have been EMT crews/fire crews without police response, and where some of these folks have to do public safety work without protection. A very solid idea, and considering as they all have been through psychological/polygraph/background checks, they are more than qualified with solid training.

Fairfax County government will not let EMS personnel carry while on duty. EMS personnel can't even transport to, nor safely store firearms in their POV's, on EMScounty property; unless the county administrative rule has changed. The last thing this county needs is some hot headed whacko EMS types to carry firearms on duty. It's bad enough grown men act like boys with their fireman toys, and justify everything they do no matter how minor as a "public safety" issue.

I agree that we are not likely to see any EMTs carrying up here in FFX. Not really a need for it since police response times are so low. Proabbly same thing for Richmond and Norfolk.

But way out in BFE? Yeah, let the EMTs carry some heat.

Another thing is that Northern Virginia EMTs sometimes go into DC and Maryland....so there would definitely be a problem with them being armed.

Many volunteer firefighters are wanna-be cops and put lights on their personal cars. Now EMTs think they are cops and want to carry guns.

Citizens can carry a firearm strapped their waist without a permit State wide in Virginia so why should EMTs be denied this right ?

When a EMT is on duty the county or city is liable for everything they do. It's not unreasonable that the government would not want to be liable for a shooting cause by an untrained employee carrying a gun on duty.

This is a bad idea. The whole idea have having a gun is to shoot people with. Shoot to kill. If a paramedic has to carry a gun and then shoot someone with it, then they are expected to give them first aid to keep them alive! No fair!!!!!
