Whats the diff?

Whats the diffrence between fairfax county police and the sheriff's? and all the other different police orginizations around the NOVA area.

The police department in Fairfax County is the primary entity responsible for law enforcement. The sheriff's department is in charge of courthouse security, running the local jail and serving writs from the court. I believe animal control is part of the police department. The incorporated towns of Vienna and Herndon also have their own police deparments. I don't believe Clifton has one. We also have the Virginia State Police and George Mason University's police departments operating in this area, along with a number of U.S. law enforcement entities.

Not exactly a comprehensive list of local PDs within the county...
