7 Wrecks in 8 Weeks, Exact Same Spot - On Clifton Road
Posted by: Observation ()
Date: August 19, 2012 05:59PM

I have seen 7 different cars wrecked in exactly the same spot on Clifton Road in the last two months. The location is Clifton Road, just past Sandy Manor Drive, before Davis' General Store.

It appears people coming north on Clifton Road from Davis General Store/Wolf Run Shoals, are going way to fast on the sharp turn left with the downhill slope before Sandy Manor Drive. They lose it into the ditch on the right, over correct, slide backwards across the road to the other side, and hit the same couple of trees.

Yesterday morning it was a BMW - abandoned with the airbag deployed. Probably a drunk who hit the bricks. Called it in during the AM and the cops showed up around 4:30PM. Before that it was a Toyota. Before that a kid in a Mazda. Etc. Etc.

Exact same spot. All the cars end up in pretty much the exact same position - with their tailgate facing the fence and their front end facing the road.

Seems like a speed bump or rumble strips and some better signage or flashing lights might be in order on that turn before there is another fatality. LAst fatality there was a woman who missed the turn, hit several cars, and died in front of my kids waiting for the school bus.

Anyone else seeing this recurring GroundHog Day on a recurring basis?

We live in Clifton and we saw the same BMW you did after they person had the accident.

That road needs help. I hate to say this but maybe a few white lines made to look like speed bumps to slow people down. I now real speed bumps will never happen. Since this is a two-way road you think VDOT would care. How many people need to die before they take notice.

Regularly drive by that site multiple time each day because I live nearby.

Cars blow through there at 50-60 on a regular basis. That turn is a 25MPH turn in the very best of conditions. If it is wet, or dark, or fall foliage is down, it is very dangerous.

The end of Sandy Manor Drive is a bus stop for school children twice a day. Cars blow past the school bus regularly - even with the school bus lights flashing red and the stop sign out.

Something needs to be done. Somebody is going to lose another loved one without some warnings posted.

I would hate to see some high school kid or kids get destroyed, maimed, or killed by one of those huge trees for lack of a simple set of visual safety clues. Anyone for that matter. That would be awful.

Just want it out there for discussion and consideration. I wouldn't feel right not pointing it out to my community.

If you live in Clifton this shouldnt be an issue. You get whatever you want, just look at all the speed bumps on nearly every street. VDOT and the county are your bitch when it comes to getting what you want.

I have an even better solution, one I'm sure everyone can agree on.

You see, at most ports around the world, most ship captains are not allowed to pilot their ships into the harbor themselves. Instead, ships are required to take on special Harbor Pilots that will guide them into the harbor. The idea here is that the local Harbor Pilots have much more in-depth knowledge of the area than the ship's captain does, so the pilot is better able to guide the ship in safely. Some ports allow captains that visit frequently to become certified to self-pilot their ships, but this requires a lot of work and training.

Oh, of course the pilots aren't free. Ships pay for pilots based on their characteristics. Heavier ships cost more than lighter ships. Ships riding deeper in the water cost more than ships that ride high. Longer ships cost more than shorter ships.

In that same spirit, I suggest that Clifton start requiring that any vehicles traveling through the area be driven by "Town Pilots." These pilots will be long-time residents that know the roads intimately, safely guiding the dangerous vehicles and their occupants through the significant number of hazards in the area. These pilots will also be able to minimize the impact of certain undesirable types by limiting engine revving, keeping radios turned down, preventing windows from being opened, etc. Due to the limited number of available pilots, traffic through Clifton would be significantly reduced because only so many vehicles could transit the area at a time. Of course, residents wouldn't be affected because, at the least, they would easily qualify for self-piloting certifications. Finally, the fees for the pilots will benefit the town enormously!

Personally, I feel the time has come for this obvious common-sense solution. The benefits will be astounding!

Gone through there hundreds of times without a problem, snow, ice water earthquake. Just quit driving like shit and you will be ok. Society keeps getting more entertaining,,,, it couldnt be the stupid ass driving that gravitates to NOVA, it must be the environment, lack of enforcement, weather, bad engineering. Its HAS to be someone else's fault that you cant do something as simple as drive down a road without wrecking.

Three things...

1 - Welcome to Fairfax Underground where the snark is as thick as molasses in January. At least I'm honest about it.

2 - This thread already had plenty of snark before I got here.

3 - Clifton is renowned for bitching about outsiders driving through at every opportunity. They don't want to do anything to change the path of the roads to improve safety, they only want to make things more inconvenient so that they're the only one on the roads. If they were truly concerned about safety, they'd be willing to support things like straigtening the curves, leveling hills, or improving the road's shoulders. Heaven forbid they accept the fact that their area is a major thoroughfare for traffic and allow some sort of bypass through the area to relieve traffic on their little roads. Instead, it's speedbumps, rumble strips, and stop signs.

Can you get a picture of the spot and post it here? It might help if we can actually see the spot instead of trying to visualize it. A picture might also help the police that monitor this site.

I live immediately adjacent to this location. There was another accident on the evening of October 2nd. This time, the car went off the road on the right side and did not cross over to the left. These accidents happen almost exclusively during or immediately after rainstorms and are always the result of excessive speed, occasionaly lubricated by excessive drinking. The odd thing is that only a small percentage of these accidents result in injuries even when cars are totalled. At some point, however, a head-on collision with a car heading West on Clifton Road is almost inevitable.

Actually, any road pre-1910 was a cow/horse path... which count for a lot of roads in the county. Clifton's not that special.

It is the sign of the times! The economy is being very unforgiving these days. Clifton is known for the American Standard (not to have ever been thought of as the 'Dream') of having and being able to maintain financialy a free standing home is what Clifton has most of. The stress of the forever contracting economy is catching up to, at least, some of these people buying/owning what is supposed to be the 'free standing all brick/solid home/house. The battle of the bulge is upon some of these homeowners, obviously. They are looking at loosing the American Standard of living. The super scamming of the economic system to maintain is coming to an end with quite a few if not many of them in Clifton.
My 'bet', (gentlemens bet only) is, next, 'coming up', we will see in the news media how a new 'wave' of homes being lost to foreclosure is going to 'hit' the Clifton area, and more!
Just saw another article on the stagnant housing in PG County has not gotten any better, with many houses syanding empty for long periods of time and is getting worse. More added to the list every day!
The stress of the unreasonably elevated cost to maintain a simple, free standing American Standard home has become simply hideous. If the mortgage payment plus maintenance, insurance ad utilities constantly rising rapidly, the taxes will! And the decent paying jobs, for most, are simply not 'there'. And everybody knows, 'stress kills'. And this overall equate is a whole lotta stress for any given person or family trying to simply maintain what is being slowly 'converted' into what is 'the dream'.
That is, of course, limited to the major metro areas like DC.
And boy do they know how to keep it as hush hush as possible. The rich, the politicians, the high ranking government officials. Hiding the real suicide rates in any given area. They know very well that anyone giving in to substance abuse is giving in to slow suicide. Only, the substance abuse 'route' is slow, and in many instances, these ones that choose the substance abuse route, take innocents 'down' with them!
And we all, the rest of us, are what? Going to just 'sit back' and do nothing about it. Letting the government and all these rich ones 'at the top of the food chain', get away with this? I guess so.
Me? As soon as I can start collecting my meager, humbly earned retirement, I, like many like me, am leaving this country to live where this fascist bullshit does not exist so ratically. The Phillipines is a good example. The dollar goes a looooong way in the Phillipines! And this 'forced' financial equation is being put upon many people in this country. Their retirement income will br spent churning in another country instead of this one, and perpetuating ball of a declining economy 'stateside' will just continue to get worse!
Had a young fella say to me the other day ' the entire financial structure is set up in precise opposite of the Cristian Holy Scriptures, I think'. And you know what my response was? I told him he was exactly right!
So, what dors this say about any so called 'proclaimed' Christian that is participating in the perpetuating downward spiral of the US economy?

Like dog eat dog story? The blood (money) sucking vampires are starting to 'feed' off theselves, each other! Yes! Just like in all the vampire story's, only you replace the blood with the money! Yet, what excuse in their twisted minds do the self proclaimed Christians, of whatever denomination, use to justify their activity's in promoting this declining economy? That it does not matter, because Jesus died on the Cross for their sins, so they are still going to be allowed to enter the Gates of Heaven upon their deaths?
No. That is a seriously twisted, evil interpretation of The Holy Scriptures. If anyone thinks along the same lines as this, well, you are in for a big surprise upon your deaths. You know very well it was and is not in any way 'God's plan for any true Christian to be participating in such a thing in any way. And who is, if we, anyone is to claim who it is, is the monetery 'King of The Vampires, or, in Christian terms, The AntiChrist?
Does anyone know? And whom do you 'serve' in life? Through this 'evil' monetary system in place, now, well imbedded into the US society today?

This road is dangerous and clearly these wrecks aren't the fault of the people driving. The government should try to ban all dangerous roads. For the children.

Another accident last night at 11:00 pm. This time there was no moisture on the road so it was purely attributable to excessive speed and inattention to the road. There were about five police vehicles plus a fire truck and ambulance. I could not tell whether there were any injuries.

Exact same roads were all there 30 years ago and were not killers then when we drove on them drunk on Saturday nights. That included leaving the ground on a couple of hills on Chapel. We managed to stay on the roads. Then again we didn't have cell phones...

Yesterday morning there was another accident - or several accidents -- involving three cars. One car was heading toward Burke Lake and the other two were heading toward Clifton. As usual, the accidents occurred during the rain.

Last evening VDOT installed a new reflective arrow sign at the curve. I doubt it will do much good.

Hey we need to speed to work, do you have ANY idea how many hours a day we sit in traffic? I blame v-dot for not making the roads wider with more cloverleaf interchanges everywhere. V-dot has made extremely dangerous driving conditions for PWC and FFC residents because of the above stated.

Do you have ANY idea how fustrating it is to live 40 miles away from work? Getting out of Tysons, navigating 495 to 66 then through the city of fairfax ( my god there is so many lights) then through clifton where everyone bitches and then even more gridlock in Lakeridge (aka woodbridge). Do you have any idea how pissed my neighbors get when I have to mow my lawn at 9pm? No So F-U!!

By the TIME most people get to that turn in the a.m. we are already extremely fatigued from the commute just getting INTO fairfax and 8 wrecks in one week is a dirrect result.

Snarky ass comment, PWC 35 is 53 because we know how to drive unlike all the slanted eye drivers that infect Fairfax. No wonderz why the speed limit is so low.

Widen that bitch to 6 lanes so I can get to work faster, it's not my fault for the gridlock, accidents and bitching Im just trying to make a dollar and live in a large house ( wish I could enjoy it more V-FING DOT). Clifton needs a highway right through it to accomodate the backbone of fairfax, PWC workforce that fill your office building full of 40+k a year workers. Have any clue how much tax revenue we bring into fairfax. I dont but im sure it is a lot. So screw you and your roads!

Another accident at 2:40 this afternoon in the rain. This one involved a red corvette that rear-ended a mazda going around the curve. As usual, no one was injured but significant damage to both cars. Both drivers were on their cell phones to the police blaming the other -- the driver of the corvette thought the Mazda's driver was going too slow and the drive of the mazda thought the corvette driver was going too fast.
