Can Fairfax County Survive if the Gov Does Massive Budget Cuts?

I was just reading an article about how Northern Virginia is 83% dependent upon federal government spending. That beg to ask the question, if the cuts go through will this crush Fairfax county and cause the county to go bankrupt?

Does Fairfax county have enough money to survive the federal government making massive budgets? Will NOVA become the land of meth and crack like Detroit did?

While there's always the possibility of it happening, I don't think sequestration will happen for the sole reason that slashing the defense budget will have a great impact on the economy as a whole.

It would not only affect the contractors supporting these programs, but also those folks who earn money based on contractor salaries:

...the movie theaters.
...the grocers.
...the tire stores.
...the shoe stores.
...the florists.
...the clothes stores.
...the coffee shops.
...and so on and so on.

Spread that across the country -- not just Fairfax or Hampton Roads -- and you will see a *huge* political backlash.

While I don't disagree (overall) with the intent of the spending cut, I do disagree in that it's not a gradual affair. Going from full throttle to full stop is not the way to do it. Turn off the tap slowly over time.

Fairfax will just raise taxes to make up for the threat to their over paid salaries.

I agree, some of the GOP defense cuts that are suggested would be devastating to NOVA.

Americans are starting to demand accountability for dollars spent and a lot of defense programs in NOVA are fat. What sucks is that all the other industries like bars, small businesses etc... take the hit.

A lot people in Fairfax county are underwater on their mortgages so having to leave and sell would really hurt.

I doubt that will fly these days. Plus you'll have the defense contractors moving out of the county and they are the big tax payers.
