Did Someone Jump Off Occoquan Bridge at 123?
Posted by: Curious1 ()

At 2 p.m. I was driving north on 123 and came across huge police presence at Occoquan bridge. Police looking over bridge. Heading back on 123 south at 4 p.m. and still a few cops looking into water.

It's possible. There is a missing person investigation. Some guy was reported missing this morning and they found his empty car parked on the bridge.

It's not really high enough to kill you though, is it?

No body means no jumper. How many times do people park their cars at bridges and then hope to disappear from their troubles.

The hood of his car was popped open when I drove by... unless the police opened it for some reason he probably was experiencing car troubles and walked somewhere to find help... and then.....?

Funny you say that. Did you read his information? What he's been doing for years, working with communities of numerous faiths, for peaceful dialogue? Is that a bad thing? I feel sorry for this gentleman, and am not going to judge what happened to him, and pray for him, and for you to wake up and realize that all people have value, even those who complain about Wendy's fast food service dude.

A prayer service will be held Sunday for Mohammad Mehboob, the Muslim leader whose body was recovered from the Occoquan River just after 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Mehboob, president of the Muslim Association of Virginia, was reported missing Thursday morning. His family said he was last seen about 3:30 a.m.

Prince William County police requested assistance from Fairfax County after Mehboob’s vehicle, a gold 1992 Lexus, was found near the bridge over the Occoquan River on Va. 123, according to the Fairfax news release.

The Fairfax County Police Marine Patrol Unit used their side scan sonar to find the body, which was recovered by the dive team, police said.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death.

Mehboob, who lived in Pakistan for 40 years before moving to the United States, was president of the association that helped build the Dar Alnoor Islamic Community Center on Hoadly Road.

After news of his disappearance and death spread Thursday and Friday, members of the Muslim Association of Virginia, and other community members, expressed sadness over the loss. Mehboob, of Jeremiah Court in Manassas, was 58 years old.

“Brother Mohammad Mehboob was a wonderful and passionate leader who devoted his life to the community,” said Wasim Entabi, who said he was a close friend of Mehboob’s.

A statement on the Muslim Association of Virginia’s website said, “Br. Mohammad Mehboob was a leader who devoted his life to the community. His work is well known throughout our community and the broader Northern Virginia area. His efforts and work will continue to generate blessings for him, insha’Allah. May Allah (swt) forgive his sins, his shortcomings and grant him a place in Jannah.”

Mehboob’s daughter, Sarah, sent a statement to InsideNoVa.com on behalf of her family late Thursday night.

“Our father, Mohammad Mehboob, is an extremely strong, courageous, and responsible person who is a role model for the community,” she said, adding that “his disappearance and the circumstances surrounding this event” were a “shock” to his family members.

A Janazah prayer service will be held for Mehboob at Dar Alnoor, 5404 Hoadly Road, Sunday at 1:30 p.m., according to the Muslim Association of Virginia’s website. His burial will be at AMAA Cemetery, 1112 Brooke Road, Fredericksburg.

Mohammad Mehboob of Manassas was last seen about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Gordon,

He made a conscious choice to kill himself. No one killed him - it was by his own hand (or feet). No pity there. Freedom of choice - what makes America great. Any one of us can choose to do the same - or not.

You still haven't defended your statement on "all" people having value...

Anywho, unattended death doesnt mean suicide. I'll wait a bit to hear what the cops say about this one. Either way, there's QUITE a story going on behind this. Community Pillars dont normally off themselves without a heck of a storyline soon to follow.

WASHINGTON - An endangered adult is missing in Prince William County.

Police say Mohammad Mehboob, 58, of Manassas was last seen early Thursday around 3:30 a.m.

Family members found his 1992 gold Lexus in the area of the Occoquan River Bridge and Gordon Boulevard in Woodbridge.

Police say Mehboob may be suicidal. However, in an email from Mehboob's daughter, Sara Mehboob, the family denies there father is a danger to himself.

"Our father, Mohammad Mehboob, is an extremely strong, courageous, and responsible person who is a role model for the community. His disappearance and the circumstances surrounding this event have been a shock to us and show no evidence of depression like or suicidal behavior. We are saddened to find that his mindset has been reported differently. He is very much committed to his family and his community, We are anxiously awaiting his safe return and ask for everyone's prayers at this time."

A K-9 unit and helicopter were used Thursday afternoon in the search, while dive teams searched the Occoquan River.

Mehboob is described as a white male, 5-feet-10-inches, 180 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Mehboob's whereabouts is asked to call Prince William County Police at 703-792-6500.

A pillar of the community, loved and respected by all. Very down to earth and always working to better relationships between the Muslim and non-Muslim local community. May God have mercy on his soul and help his family get through this difficult time.

Mohammad Mehboob was an amazing person, a great friend and a deeply loved and trusted community leader. His grace under pressure, gentle words and impeccable manners helped guide the Muslim Association of Virginia through many tough issues. He was a great example for all of us and no one can put into words how much his absence has affected all of us.

Sad that anyone reaches the point to make such a decision, but it
was his own doing. A permanent solution to what may have been a
temporary problem. Seems rather short-sighted.

Seems like the church he went to was aware of his "shortcomings" but his family was not? Seems fishy to me.

What a ridiculous post! Did you even know the person before you spew nonsense about him? Radicalization? It seems that you are too xenophobic, too radicalized to see a human being as a human being. If you had ever met him or knew what he did for the community (not just HIS community) you wouldn't say anything like that.

What's rediculous? He chose to end his own life. Whatever
problems he may have been facing or may have believed he
was facing would probably have resolved in the future, but
he chose to kill himself. Permanent solution to a temporary
problem. An unfortunate choice, but his choice nonetheless.

Any effect on his family is (was) his responsibility. Why did
his family not see the issues he felt were facing him rather
than immediately deny that there was anything wrong? The only
answers are that: 1) they are in denial; 2) they are lying; or
3) he actively chose to withhold knowledge from them.

By next week this will all be forgotten.

The whole thing sounds fishy to me. We'll know more after the investigation is complete. I have a feeling that this story has more "meat" to it.

Mehboob was an extraordinary man. He devoted his life to charity and service. He was one of the kindest, most compassionate person one could have the privilege of knowing. His excellent reputation and manners supersede him. The community is saddened and shocked (Muslim and non alike) by his death.

McGruff, "Shortcomings" in Islam can be something as minor as forgetting to say hello to someone, it does not indicate anything detrimental. It is a general prayer said for any deceased. Let's not jump to conclusions on his death, it is still being investigated.

For the few meanies on this board, I feel sorry for you that your hearts are so blackened by hate and ignorance, and even more so that you are trapped in your own thwarted minds and beliefs.

True, however the article specifically lists him as an "Endangered Individual" and the police had information on him suggesting he was suicidal. Either way, we won't know for sure until the investigation is concluded.

From the Fairfax County Police Department:

"Police are investigating the unattended death of Mohammad Mehboob, 58, of 6954 Jeremiah Ct. in Manassas. Mehboob’s body was recovered from the Occoquan River shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29, near the Route 123 bridge overpass.

Mehboob was reported as a missing person to Prince William County Police early in the day on Thursday, June 28. Prince William County Police requested assistance that afternoon after Mehboob’s vehicle was located near the Route 123 bridge that crosses over the Occoquan River. Multiple resources were sent to the area to search the shoreline and water.

The Fairfax County Police Marine Patrol Unit utilized their side scan sonar and located the body, which was then recovered by the Dive Team, assisted by Prince William County Police. The Medical Examiner will determine cause of death."

Update, June 29:

Mohammad Mehboob was found dead this morning, after an extensive search that lasted several hours.

Mehboob was president of the Muslim Association of Virginia. He had been missing since 3 a.m. Thursday. His vehicle was discovered on a bridge Thursday morning. Mehboob also served on the board of directors for Dar AlNoor Islamic Community Center.

"His body was found this morning," the Fairfax County Police Department Public Information Office said. The Fairfax County Police Department had taken over the investigation.

If you knew Mohammad Mehboob, consider leaving a message of remembrance for the family.

Update, 9:44 p.m.: The Mehboob family reached out to Patch this evening to comment on Mohammad Mehboob's disappearance.

"Our father, Mohammad Mehboob, is an extremely strong, courageous, and responsible person who is a role model for the community. His disappearance and the circumstances surrounding this event have been a shock to us and show no evidence of depression or suicidal behavior. We are saddened to find that his mindset has been reported differently. He is very much committed to his family and his community. We are anxiously awaiting his safe return and ask for everyone's prayers at this time."

Original story: Mohammad Mehboob, president of the Muslim Association of Virginia, has been missing since 3 a.m. today, and is possibly endangered. Mehboob also serves on the board of directors for Dar AlNoor Islamic Community Center.

Family members found Mehboob's vehicle on the Occoquan River Bridge this morning. They had not seen him since 3 a.m., Prince William County police public information offier Jonathan Perok said.

"It is believed that Mr. Mehboob is suicidal and has been listed as endangered," Perok said. "Currently, as a precaution, dive teams are searching the Occoquan River."

Police K-9 units and a helicopter were used in the search earlier today.

If you know any information that might help police find Mohammad Mehboob, call 703-792-6500. Mehboob drove a 1992 gold Lexus. He is described as a white male, 5-foot-10, weighing 180 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. He lived on Jeremiah Court in Manassas.

So he was underwater and they had to use the sonar to find the body? That's a bit suspicious isn't it? Unless he walked out there carrying a rock to weigh himself down or something.

I don't believe it was a suicide. Why would someone who spent most of their time helping others and community service, "choose" to end his life, THERE, and THEN.

He helped me and my family when we were homeless 3 months after I got laid off from my cushy job in Tyson's. He collected money for me and my pregnant wife, and he set up with a local hotel to host me for an entire month as I traversed northern VA to find a new job.

He was featured in the Washington Examiner... the most conservative Fox News jockin' paper in the world.... He was featured in a positive "Faith" based article.

He never wore a turban.

He always smiled, and spoke calmly. He raised money for all kinds of efforts not just the muslim community.

From God we are created and to God we return. May he rest in peace.Ameen.

He was unwilling to go along with our "specialized training program" for young males to help rid the world of the Great Satan and had to go. He was too cozy with infidels and had to go.

Mohammad Mehboob remembered as 'a man of passion'
By: Amanda Stewart | Inside NoVA

http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2012/jul/06/mohammad-mehboob-remembered-man-passion-ar-2036549/

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. --
Family members use a lot of words to describe Mohammad Mehboob. Passionate. Caring. Dedicated. Open-minded.

But one word describes him best of all, they said.

“He was very humble,” said his wife, Samia, “If I could describe him I would say he is the humblest man I have ever seen.”

Days after a funeral service was held for Mehboob at Dar AlNoor -- the mosque he helped to build as part of the Muslim Association of Virginia -- his wife, four adult children and other family members gathered at his Manassas area home to share their memories of him.

Police found the 58-year-old Mehboob’s body in the Occoquan River June 29, less than 24 hours after family members reported him missing. Fairfax County police are investigating it as an “unattended death” and are awaiting the medical examiner’s report to determine his cause of death, police spokesman Don Gotthardt said Thursday.

Now, about a week after his death, Mehboob’s family members said they are focused on remembering his life.

Much of what Mehboob’s four children now know about him came to light after he passed away, said his son, Sherafgan.

“People have been coming up to me and telling me that he helped them,” he said.

Sherafgan said his father would often give money to people in need, something encouraged in Islamic teachings. And, also taught in Islam, he would not tell anyone about it.

“He would give people money from his own wallet and we had no idea he did that,” Sherafgan said.

“I’m so proud of him and I’m so thankful to Allah that he did that,” Samia Mehboob said.

Family members said that after Mehboob’s death they are also coming to learn how much he meant to people in the community. They’ve learned that he once spent time patiently answering questions for a middle school student doing a class project on Islam, that he donated boxes and boxes of Qur’an to prisoners who asked for them, that he was who many turned to when they needed money for burial services.

“He was very humble,” his oldest daughter, Sehr, said. “Whatever he did, he minimized it.”

Over 2,000 people attended Mehboob’s funeral prayer service, and his funeral procession stretched three miles long, his youngest daughter, Sara, said.

“I think that’s when we all started to see how he reached people,” she said. “People loved him.”

Sherafgan said people of all ages came up to him at the prayer service, telling him how his father was like a father to them, too.

“We are his kids, so we will always say nice things about him,” Sherafgan said of he and his sisters. “But I have not come across anyone who had anything negative to say.”

Throughout his life, Mehboob was passionate about everything he did, his family members said.

“He was always learning,” Sara said. “If he was passionate about something he wanted to learn about it.”

Mehboob would study a topic until he mastered it, his wife said.

“Whatever he started, he took it to the highest level,” she said.

One of his first passions was photography, and framed prints of images he captured around the world hang in the Mehboob’s house.

“He took the most amazing photographs,” Sara said. “We have boxes and boxes of beautiful pictures he took.”

Mehboob and his family moved from Pakistan to Virginia in 1993, and his passion then turned to his children’s education, his wife said.

“He always used to tell us to do our best,” his daughter, Saba, said.

Many in the Northern Virginia area remember Mehboob as a leader in the Islamic community, but religion wasn’t always a big part of his life, his son said.

When Mehboob’s oldest daughter, Sehr, read the book “Mohammad” by Martin Lings in high school, she told her father it was an interesting book that he should read, she said. He did and that sparked his passion for religion, his family members said.

His family members said Mehboob wanted to learn everything he could, not just about Islam, but about other religions as well.

“A lot of people of any religion don’t want to experience other religions,” Sehr said. “But he did. He treated them all with respect.”

Sherafgan said it seemed that his father had reached a new level of religious understanding in recent years.

“He was walking and talking the Quran and living it,” he said.

Mehboob’s wife said he was dedicated to his role as a leader in the Muslim Association of Virginia, often dropping everything to take calls and offer help to people from the group who needed his help.

“He never missed a call,” Samia Mehboob said. “I would ask him why and he would say, ‘I don’t know. Somebody needs me. I don’t want to miss a call.’”

In a news release, Raffi Uddin Ahmed of the Muslim Association of Virginia said Mehboob “was a man of peace, who sought to increase the bonds of friendship among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.”

In the news release, Muslim Association of Virginia officials dispute initial reports that indicated that Mehboob was possibly suicidal at the time of his disappearance and asked police to “perform a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his demise.”

Fairfax County police said Mehboob’s death is under still investigation.

“At this point there is nothing to indicate a crime has occurred,” Gotthardt said.

In their news release, Muslim Association of Virginia officials said Mehboob, who was president of the association for seven years, was “a steadfast and God-fearing Muslim” who “worked tirelessly to help build the Dar AlNoor Islamic Community Center.”

“All those who had the privilege to meet him can attest to his upright and unwavering character,” the news release said.

Family members said what they will remember most about Mehboob is his passion and how he worked tirelessly at whatever he was doing.

“He never sat still. He was a man of immense passion,” Sherafgan said.

His children said they will also remember the things their father taught them.

Saba said she remembers what he told his children as they prepared to go to college and become independent.

“He would say I have taught you everything I have to teach you now you have to use your mind and act on it,” she said.

In I think it was the second update, maybe the first story, it said that the family alerted police that he left and not returned and was suicidal. There's always a chance it was staged to look like a suicide. A good friend of ours knows him too. With the positions he's held he's known a lot of people and probably touched a lot of lives. We didn't know my dad was going to kill himself either, among other things. Was shocking to us too. You think you know someone, but they can still completely shock you. I find it comforting to think that he left of his own choice, on his terms.

I was very saddened by this news. I remember Mohammad as a kind and caring man who would go out of his way to help everyone. I worked with Mohammad for several years at Grease 'n Go in Dale City and his guidance and wisdom stays with me today. I can't recall a day where he wasn't happy about life. Some of the memories I have is when he invited me to his house to celebrate the end of Ramadan with his family, working with Sherafgan at the shop and having Mohammad and Samia over for dinner at my house. My thoughts go out to his family. We have lost a great man.

The police reported they thought he was suicidal, but the family said that he was not. As I noted before, something just doesn't add up here. In his religion, suicide would be a terrible sin, and of all the ways to do it why would he go to a river and drown himself? Seems like there's definitely more to this story than we've been led to believe.

Muslims usually try to take a few random infidels along with them when they commit suicide.

Perhaps the police should have continued trolling the river after they found the first body?
