NEEDLESS TIPPING, TIP JARS, ETC
Posted by: TIRED OF IT ()

Recently, I have been confronted with tip jars at the dry cleaners and every other service establishment.

As for the Dry cleaners, the owners of the dry cleaners need to have those jars removed as they have no business being there.

THe other night at Coastl Flats. I wanted to buy a gift card. I was routed to bar. When I paid by Credit card, there was a space for a tip. How ridiculous.

By the way, at a restaurntant, a waiter should not get a tip on final bill bill but rather the bill before txes. From here on out, I am onyl tipping 10%.

Join me.

The restaurant should get a separate receipt system just for people buying gift cards? Are you completely whacked? Think about it. It's a bar. People tip bartenders. Therefore, there's a tip line on the receipt. Get a clue.

As for the numerous tip jars. Ignore them and they'll go away.

Starbucks's employees get 10's of thousands of dollars each year with those tip jars alone. think about it

if youre too cheap to tip, fine. dont. but what reason would you have for wanting to keep less-cheap people from tipping?

Tipping is a ridiculous practice and should be banned. It would be better for everyone involved if business paid their employees a decent wage and charged more to cover the additional cost.

In some cases, I fully agree. A friend of mine once took a job at a
small chain of of restaraunts at minimum wage + tips expected. A
week later, the owner announced to the employees that they would
in the future, be required to place all their tips in a jar behind
the counter and would be paid minimum wage "out of the jar".
My friend took off his apron and told the owner to shove it up
his big fat ass, spit on the floor, and dared the owner to
follow him on the way out the door. Good for him! (the owner
didnt follow, and in fact, the chain went bankrupt about 4 months
later) What goes around comes around.

maybe, maybe not. until then, dont be a cheap bastard. use your own logic and tip at least 18% for decent service and pretend the listed prices are that much higher.

what's dumb is that ur too much of a vag to write "0" in the tip block if you don't want to tip. I don't tip your mom after I blast on her face...it can be done.

I make it a habit to only tip at 10% at a restaurant and not a penny more.

As for the tip jars, they are unprofessional andhave no place at drycleaners, Shitbucks or anywhere else.

It seems that most idiots against this measure are using their mommy and daddy's credit cards.

I don't tip. I don't believe in tipping. If they really put forth an effort, I'll give them a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

Wow, what is up with all the threads on tipping? And why do so many people have a problem with tipping a waitress/waiter/carside-to-go person/pizza delivery person?

They are providing a service for you. In many cases, they are getting paid next to nothing to do so. If they provide good service, reward them for it. Otherwise, I think you are taking advantage of them.

In any case, you guys are making me feel like I've got great tipping karma. I typically tip 10% for buffet/carside-to-go and 20% for regular dining - more if I don't order much or if the service is especially good. For delivery I usually tip $3-$5 depending on how far the delivery person has to drive and the size of my order.

And as for tip jars... I don't add to them often. But there are places where I feel the employees make an extra effort (like one place where I get take-out often enough that they know my order by heart). They occasionally get a few dollars or a $5 in the tip jar.

i usually tip with however many ones I find stuffed in my Rucksack and or loincloth. Usually sweaty ones but still viable currency nonetheless.

While since we are talking about tipping, just want to ask how much people tip the staff helping for the kids birthday party. Like Chuck Cheese or ShadowLand etc..

Thanks

why not tip on the bill same as you would another restaurant (15% for uninspired service-20% for excellent service) as they probably pool everything. of course a extra $5 to someone who goes above and beyond is probably appreciated.

Should I tip a prostitute? If so, how much? What should I base this tip on? Length of the "big O," or the amount of effort she put into it.

I really appreciate any insight.

i know its hard in an area like nova where all of the establishments seem to be national chains and people dont seem to work the same hospitality jobs for more than a month or so, therefore making it difficult to build a reputation as a good tipper and getting to enjoy everything that comes along with that. but im the kind of guy who leaves $5-$10 a night in hotel rooms for housekeeping. even though i never see their faces, we know its a difficult, low-paying job and its nice to show your appreciation for that.

at the end of the day, tipping promotes a culture of improved, inspired service that leads to better experiences for everyone.

Haven't you already given her a "tip"?

I tip bartenders and waitresses generously if they do everything right. I tip cabdrivers fairly well too if they're efficient. I reluctantly throw the mailman and the newspaper delivery guy a $20 every X-mas just to stay on their good side.

Can't think of any other position that deserves a tip. I usually never tip hotel cleaning staff, although I did make an exception last week when the cleaning person folded up my dirty socks and underwear.

Tipping hotel cleaning staff is appropriate and can pay off. Last summer in Vegas I tipped a five-spot on the first morning, the cleaning lady left one of the new irons and ironing boards, a large stack of extra towels, and a huge bag full of soaps and shampoos (the stuff literally lasted me for months).

I don't always do it if I'm in the place for just one night, but if you're there for a few days it could be a benefit for you.

George J, if you can't tip like you should, then you should just run to Safeway, make your own food, and stay out of the restaurants. They earn a living that way and if you grew up in this country, it's understood that tipping is expected. What's an extra few dollars to help the server make a living? You must be the "cheap-ass" in your group of people, huh?

To be fair, if the nail tech is talking in a foreign language and not paying attention to the customer, that would be cause for a reduced tip. (I'm assuming it wasn't during one of those 'soak your hand in the solution for five minutes' things.) I've left restaurants where the staff seemed more interested in flirting with other customers/each other than in waiting on me.

OTOH, why would you keep going to a place that gave you subpar service?

The whole tipping thing is so out of wack now.. You tip because the waiter is doing a good job. You shouldn't be expected to tip if the waiter sucks.

tipping should be eliminated as a wage. Servers should be given a full salary or hourly wage. You should not be required to tip to make up for their lack of wages.

i already give them all the power they want, replace components and even on occasion they get an upgrade, they are not getting a salary, wage or tip from me. i own them, they do what i say.

I think tipping is fine in restaurants--15 to 20 percent. I don't tip at Starbucks, ice cream stores or similar places. Wait staffs at restaurants count on our tips. This is a tradition that's gone on, well, forever. Ice cream scoopers, baristas, etc. have recently (last 10 years) started putting out tip jars. There's no "history" there, and I think it sets a bad precedence. I don't think we need to give everyone who gives us service for 2-4 minutes a tip.

I can remember being very annoyed at my brother's wedding 6 years ago. It was at a nice hotel. Besides a sit down dinner, they had an open bar for guests. I was shocked when I went to get a drink that a tip jar was sitting on the counter. I made them remove it immediately. My brother and his bride did not expect their guests to come with any money to their wedding. And, obviously, they were going to tip the bar staff at the end of his night (It had already been discussed with catering).

Expectation for tip kills the authenticity of service of smile of heart of joy. Give them a decent wage... don't make them be judged every night.

100% agreed. Restaurants get away by paying $2.16 an hour to their servers and allow you to pick up the tab and fill in their salary while the restaurants keep more profits for themselfs. On the other hand you are more likely to receive better service if the waiter knows that their income depends on the service they provide rather then knowing they will be getting the same paycheck every week.
