Apparently the perp was a very tall 5th grader with a toy knife. A bunch of kids in my daughter's school were all talking about it, but when I called the school the principal hadn't heard anything about it. According to the Patch, the Police handled it privately with the families . . .

How dare the police get involved in something that is CLEARLY within the jurisdiction of the school?

Exactly why I would want a LEO handling the investigation and not a FCPS administrator. Right?

The police shoot first and ask questions later. The principal may not be so drastic.

First a recap...

UPDATED: Man With Knife Approaches Girl Near KPW
A similar incident occurred mid-March.
By Whitney Rhodes Email the author April 20, 2012
http://burke.patch.com/articles/police-man-with-knife-approaches-girl-near-kpw

UPDATE (4:07 p.m.): The girl ran and was not injured, according to Lucy Caldwell of the Fairfax County Police Department. Officers believe the man gave chase but never caught his victim.

So far county police consider this a "suspicious person” incident, Caldwell said. FCPD officers are canvassing the neighborhood, gathering information. Police have not yet linked this incident to the Kings Park West attack in mid-March.

----------------

Fairfax County Police say a 13-year-old girl was approached by a man with a knife near Kings Park West Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 4:40 p.m. in the 9600 block of Pierrpont Street near Royal Lake and Burke Road. A man with a knife attacked a 24-year-old woman in Kings Park West just over a month ago. A Woodson student was grabbed off Pickett a few days after the KPW attack. No word yet on whether the cases are connected.

Police describe the suspect as between 15-18 years old, about 5'5'' with gray pants and a blue and orange hoodie.

Patch is working on getting additional information. Call police at 703-644-7377 with any tips.

Fairfax County Police report they have identified a person in connection with the suspicious event that took place on Thursday, April 19, when a man reportedly chased a 13-year-old girl with a knife. The event occurred on Pierrpont Street in the Burke area.

After investigation, police determined the individual doing the chasing was an emotionally disabled pre-teen who lives in the area. He was carrying a fake knife.

Police handled the matter privately with the families involved and notified the community in an email.

"This incident is not related to any other incident, and there is no public safety threat," said Lucy Caldwell, spokesperson for the Fairfax County Police.
