Proposed 'Virtual High School' in Fairfax County

Saving money once again. BAD IDEA. How do we know their "parents" are not taking the test or quizzes for the kid?

Parents may take tests and quizzes, but it will become quickly known when the kid gets into college or the job market. Can't hide stupid.

Not sure how Fairfax will work, but some states teacher that work for virtual have scheduled calls to the student and test them over the phone on the topic to see that the kid themself are doing the work.

On the face of it, it sounds like a bad idea. But there are circumstances in which it could be very helpful. For example, some kids are medically unable to attend classes, either for a short period of time, sporadically, or more consistently. Currently, they are assigned in-home teachers - if they are available. Unfortunately, however, many of the teachers are not very good, instruction is only offered in key subjects, and the sick kids don't have priority over kids who've been removed from school for discipline problems. If a kid gets sick in the last quarter of the year, and cannot get in-home instruction for a subject, he/she has to repeat the entire school year for that subject. Virtual instruction would have been a godsend when this happened in my family.

FCPS puts kids who have discipline problems in front of kids who are too sick to come to school? So a kid that brings drugs to school gets in-home teachers before a kid with a terrible disease does? This is crazy!

The kids with discipline problems don't go to the head of the line - but they are on a par with kids with medical issues. I never thought it was fair - but I feel for the parents and kids on both sides.

feel for the parents, too. It’s not their fault. But, on one hand we have a kid with cancer and on the other we have a kid who brings illegal drugs to school. They are on par? Shouldn’t we give the nod to the kid with cancer and be sure this child gets the teacher first?
