Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Improving Fairfax Underground
Posted by: Mike Costigan ()
Date: April 12, 2012 12:49AM

I found this site a few weeks ago after having lived in Northern Virginia most of my life. I think it's interesting, informative, entertaining, and helps maintain a sense of community - something that I haven't really felt in Northern Virginia as a whole.

While many posters here consistently write informative, non-offensive, educative material (and I applaud them for it), it seems that almost just as many do the opposite. I love a healthy debate and think it's great to see it on here but name-calling, shutting other people down, making fun of people for their comments is not debate. It's making this site look bad, and more importantly, it's making our community look bad.

I call on everyone to improve our communication ground by posting more respectfully and intelligently. Think about what you want to say and make sure you're on topic. Before you hit 'Post message', make sure your post is relevant to the topic at hand, non-offensive is of some value to others or at least interesting in some way. Post something that you would actually say in person to someone that thinks highly of you, or someone that you think highly of.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's wrong to be opinionated or feel strongly about an issue, but there's nothing to be gained by posting offensive comments just because you disagree with someone.

Cheers, here's to a better Fairfax forum.

I have noticed that there are a large number of posters here who just need to vent 7th grade garbage, the effect on me is to look at people, on the street, differently-knowing that underneath the thinly veneered veil of most or many is a nasty hateful and immature person, and clearly ALOT of right wing racists.

If you don't like the content , no one is forcing you to use Fairfax Underground.

You could even explore the possibility of creating your own version of an informitive local community website.

And by "right wing racists", I mean "people who take responsibility for themselves, prefer smaller government, and refuse to kiss Obama's ass".

It is a seriously bad jump to conclusion to extrapolate a literal handful of posters on an obscure message board to the general population...or even the general population of THAT message board.

@sorry mike - Thanks, I know what you mean but it's a possibility.

@Fruppie - Thank you, you've made an excellent example out of yourself.

@louisey - While I agree that there is a lot of racism on here, a lot of it that I have seen are meant to be jokes. Hell, half of it could be the same poster using a million names. For as long as I've lived in Fairfax, most people I've met are hard-working decent people. Don't write us all off just yet.

@BEH - You're completely right, no one is forcing me to use Fairfax Underground. Just like no one is forcing you to read the first two lines of the original post, right?

People generally feel free to be dicks on anonymous message boards and since there is no moderating, the trolls have basically set up camp here.

A lot of the racism is from the rednecks that are under the impression that Virginia is still part of the confederacy. Don't let it bother you, just know that when people try to convince you that racism doesn't really exist anymore, you should understand that the racists are just not comfortable expressing their racism ion public but there is still metric fuckloads of racism floating around, you just can't tell who they are anymore.

@just sayin - Right, then my name will be linked to how many posts I've put up. How will that make my posting any different? I may end up doing that, but being registered or not shouldn't make me any different. That's why there's the option.

@damuri ajashi - Racism is present, yes. That won't change. But that shouldn't ruin your day. Who cares what ignorant people who don't matter to you think about you?

The only way to have any accountability would be to require user registration. Right now everyone in this thread could be one person like most threads in Off-Topic. If there was registration it would require more part effort for the anon trolls. At least when Miz was around you could just filter out his shit because he was registered.

Get it straight-

This isn't about racism, that's not why I'm posting. I'm not here to complain, and ruin your morning with my scary wild opinions. Some will take it that way regardless of what I say, and you know who you are.

I love FFXUG, as I stated in the OP, I think it's great, but some of the content on here is ugly. Imagine if the world ended tomorrow, and this was the only record left of Fairfax. Or all of VA. Or all the USA. People would think many of us were blind to the world, preoccupied with our petty day to day issues and ignorant because of them.

The rest of the world thinks lowly of the US, why is that? Because of you, Fruppie? I went to the UK a few years ago, blending in until I opened my mouth and spoke American. Immediate change in attitude. A girl I met explained why the English and Europe in general disliked Americans - ignorance. I fired up, vouched for my family and friends, told her ignorance is everywhere, and most people aren't ignorant in the US. She just rolled her eyes. Maybe she's been to this site.

If you want to call me a complainer, fine, I could care less. Since when were complaints not allowed? When we founded this country, we complained until we fought and started a damn revolution and gained our independence. Think about all those men who gave their blood, sweat and tears to give you a home. A home where you can tell off others for complaining.

And if you're not happy with your life, CHANGE IT. Yeah it's possible. No, change is not easy. And guess what, it's hard. But no matter what your situation, you can always at least make it better. Quit playing a victim, grow a pair and do something for yourself. Do everything. Stop sleeping through life, wake up!

Remember, you can't be ignorant and know it all at the same time; that's why people don't like you.

Chill out, Fairfax.

Because sometimes... it's just not that serious.

LOL- great shit. 1st amendment is awesome, and still learning this site. Is there stuff I've seen that I disagree with or find offensive? Yup. However,I'd rather have that than the opposite. Long live the 1st amendment, Fairfax Underground, and may our freedom of speech always be cherished.

I'm with WTL on this one. MC has been on this site for 15 minutes as far as I know and is already telling people how things should be. He's not even willing to register (for whatever reason) but still posts some long ass post in FFX General (which belongs in OFF Topic) explaining to us what we need to do. Can you imagine what a "know it all" this guy will be when/if he finally registers and gets 1000+ posts under his belt.

Mike Coistigan should register, then go eat a bowl full of dicks!!!! HA!!!

That is so far from the truth. Having your name in blue means nothing at all. Even as a blue name Miz still posted as a black person as well so your theory just got blown out of the window. It doesn't matter how long he has been here. He has obviously been here long enough to observe the idiotic shit that goes on but not long enough to know that it will never ever stop.

So why is it that when someone else points out the same thing everyone jumps on his ass about it? Because he isn't registered? Oh boohoo. Go fucking cry more about it. I guess that's messing up your day so bad to see his name in black. See? He was right. Racist!

In my opinion this website is extremely repulsive. So many people just talking trash about one another, having no remorse or proof of the allegations being made. This site is filled with people who have nothing better to do than hurt other from behind a computer screen. Why this should be a website about helping others and passing information around a community not a war zone where people put other people on trial and say horrible things about people. This is no better than cyber bullying except the anonymous names prevent you form having to reveal who they are. This is like a middle school where people do nothing but start rumors about others to hurt peoples feelings.

I hope that you read this message and think, about your future activity and really only present information that is factual and helpful to others in the northern Virginia area. Put yourself in the person your about to hurt before you post your message.

Thanks, Mike, for the thoughtful and articulate post. You are absolutely right this site has the potential to be a useful and informative community staple, but the adolescence here ruins it for everyone. I truly believe there are not idiotic adults here posting smut, I believe it to be teens, but that matters not considering the complete lack of a moderator.

In summary, I URGE the blog owner to please keep this site running and exercise some editorial muscle. I began using this site upon moving to Fairfax recently, but come here rarely now that I find it utterly useless.
(Trolls, have your way with my post. The real moron is the blog owner for not keeping tabs on this forum.)

It is adults. Sad, lonely adults with nothing better to do with their lives. Teens don't even act this simple.

Look go ahead and post your insights and thoughts of profundity. Yeah maybe a lot of a-holes here(me included) but you can ignore them. what's the big deal? You want censorship?

its a stream of consciousness jump in and if you don't like go back to shore

@BEH - you used the word "Douche" out of context! 30 lashes with a cane!
@NRA - speech can only be free if it is "good" speech. "Bad" speech should OF COURSE be eliminated. It's what our Founding Fathers would have wanted :)
@teens - um, yeah, right http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/848726.html
@OP -bro, grow up and learn to deal. Whole world aint pretty roses and sunshine. Here on the interweb, ppl speak their minds. Lotsa minda are full of crap and lotsa minda are full of knowledge. And there are even some ppl like me that are full of shit yet make sense every once in a while (apparently, I've been told LoLz). It's up to YOU to be capable to disseminate the information, not try and control it's source, yo. Words arent pit bulls (you like how I did that, NRA? LoLz) , they cant really seriously hurt you (well, unless YOU allow them to) so they are really no danger to you. If any words came on this board that actually were a danger to you (i.e. personal info, address, etc) the site admin would simply remove it. I've seen it happen so I know the site is being patrolled, admin-ed, etc. And like I've told others before, if you dont like the site, there's always that big "X" at the top corner of yr screen that you can click and make it go away. Hope you dont take offense but seriously, just grow up. It's only words and you can really learn a lot here. But you also have to keep in mind that the EXACT SAME ppl you see driving around here are the EXACT SAME ppl you see posting on this board. Think about it, my friend.

I think a lot of folks think the same way you do, OP. Too bad the moderator doesn't see the $$$ potential of this site if it were cleaned up, but he must want that'freedom of speech' they keep talking about ... that's a sure way to keep the advertisers from wanting any part of it...
