Fairfax County is planning for transit in 2050

WASHINGTON - It's hard to think what the region's transit might look like in 38 years.

In the 1950s Walt Disney and others envisioned a 2050 transit system with monorails, flying vehicles and automated cars.

The technology could very well exist by then but practical application may be much further off.

Fairfax County is thinking ahead - looking for practical ideas for future transit projects. Transit officials are asking residents if there should be more Metro stops, light rail, streetcars or more buses with dedicated lanes in its future plans.

The future of transit survey is being conducted by the county's transportation department, according to Ellen Kamilakis.

"This isn't for five years from now. We're aiming for 2050," Kamilakis said.

How to pay for future transportation is also part of the survey.

"It's not just simply transportation modes we're looking at," Kamilakis said. "It's an overall sort of holistic approach to how we're going to be able to get around Fairfax County in the future."

The county will publish the results of the study in 18 months.

Source?

About the only thing I could possibly believe is that a robotic female morning traffic reporter built by WTOP ownership may give a Virginia-related traffic note by 2050.

Here you go...

An excerpt from the 1958 Disneyland TV Show episode entitled Magic Highway USA. In this last part of the show, an exploration into possible future Transportation technologies is made. It's hard to believe how little we've accomplished on this front since 1958, and how limited the scope for imagining such future technologies has become. Witness an artifact from a time where the future was greeted with optimism. Note the striking animation style here, achieved with fairly limited animation and spectacular layouts.

50-story skyscrapers in Reston, Tysons, Merrifield, Falls Church, and Arlington, and zip lines connecting all of them.

I'm not disputing the prediction itself, those are evident and anyone awake in grade school has seen them or read them. Disney wasn't the only one to do that, not the first and not the best. I am specifically asking for sources for what the article stated. Where in the video does it say 2050 is the year as the article says Disney said?

If I recall correctly, Disney was predicting what the future would look like in 100 years. Which would have been approx 2050 as the film was made in 1950ish.

So Kamilakis worked for Disney and taking the plan to Fairfax?

They should, the current system we have is flawed and antiquated.

I hope she gives Disney credit for the plan. 7100 should have its new name in the plan. I hope the plan predicts the other name changes.

I wonder why they feel they still must waste all that money on "studies?" Don't they have to (attempt) to drive to work at their Taj Mahal (like the rest of the population which has to commute around here)? Or, are the traffic problems in the DC Metro area something they only "hear" about when "The 10 Worst Cities to Commute to Work in" annual study gets published? Anyway,a whole new transportation system has already been invented and tested and is now available, but the local politicos figure they would rather waste taxpayer funding on repetitive, continual never-ending new "studies of potential need" instead of actually beginning proactive planning and building using what is amazingly already here--why wait for 2050 or 2100 for this? For starters, check out the website for the "Interstate Traveler Company"(www.interstatetraveler.us)!
