on my house post it, as i'm quite happy with them so far. it previously had the helmet style, the metal capillary action jobs, when i bought it. but they were pretty banged up. i had the roof replaced after the hailstorm along with new gutter caps. so far, so good.
do not even think about plastic ones or those cheapo mesh style. the mesh style does work, providing you dont have any pine trees or poplars/maples with the helicopters w/i 100 feet of the house, cause if you do, those will clog up in short order. plastic is "ok" if going on the cheap, but the constant heating and cooling of them from the sun makes 'em warp, and then theyre junk.
you should also see about getting the trees trimmed back from the house, if you have a lot of limbs hanging over. if a branch breaks and lands on the gutter, it'll fubar the thing, and you'll get a cascade of water in that location. same thing with multi level roofs, if a downspout collects from a higher gutter and spills out on a lower section of roof, it'll overwhelm the cap where it dumps, and during a good rain you'll get a nice waterfall.
