Crackdown on Illegal Immigration Quiets Soccer Fields in Pr. William
Posted by: whataretheyworriedabout? ()
Date: March 12, 2008 07:15AM

As Prince William proceeds with its crackdown on illegal immigrants, one result is a shake-up and shrinking of the area's entrenched Hispanic soccer leagues. The reason is simple, organizers say: Players and fans, among them many illegal immigrants, are so worried about being detained by authorities en route to or at games that they are avoiding local fields. Legal immigrants are also wary, for themselves or their illegal relatives, organizers say.

To try to allay fears, league owners have hosted team meetings at which police have explained the county's policy, which took effect last week and requires officers to check the immigration status of crime suspects who they think might be in the country illegally. There are to be no immigration checkpoints, racial profiling or sidelines raids, the teams were told. The meetings have had little impact, league owners said.

seems fair to me.

so are people concerned that illegal immigrants have stopped playing soccer because they are afraid of getting caught in their illegal activity?

this is the reason why i am sick and tired of the immigration debate. if you are here illegally you broke the law. i dont care if you speak english and i dont care about the color of your skin. if you can here illegally you are a criminal and should be sent back where you came from.

it really is simple.

It's not that simple. How do you determine who is here illegally? You can argue that due process doesn't apply to illegals (though from my understanding of these things, it does). But what happens when Americans who happen to be Hispanic are singled out because of the color of their skin and their last name? How is that different from what happened to blacks in the South in the 1960s?

Well, they are not putting the illegals in different "illegal-only" schools, nor are they blasting them with water hoses. Sounds like they are asking them to simply go back and come back the right way, or they will receive some assistance in doing so. I don't think the race card applies here, but it always seems to pop up when there is nothing else to support one's thoughts. I have no doubt it will be frustrating for those here legally, whether through birth or naturalization. Something has to be done and Prince William has it right.

I'm sure there's plenty of soccer fields in Fairfax for them to use without worrying about being harassed.

You name is run for warrants when you have an encounter with police, how come you citizenship can't also be run if they have a green card, nothing to fear.

But what

Tough shit, the law applies to everyone, people aren't being singled out because they look foreign, it is only being run if they are being arrested or applying for services. You need a proof of citizenship to get a driver's license in this state as well.

>How is that different from
> what happened to blacks in the South in the 1960s?
Separate facilities by race? Deployed national guard? What you are referring to was based on race, this is not. I assume there are a lot of illegals keeping out of PW other than Hispanics as well.

We let more people immigrate legally to this country than any other country. Born here? You're a citizen, (one of the few countries where that is still true along with Canada).

The free ride is over.

Prince William doesn't have it right. Property values are cratering, potential employers and outside investment are staying away and property taxes are going up 28% to pay for anti-immigration enforcement. Yes, things are tough all over in the housing market, but PW has been especially hard hit compared to surrounding counties. I believe a lot of it has to do with the county's publicized stance on illegal immigration.

Yea, a lot of those foreclosures in PWC are on homes that were owned by people with Hispanic names.

Its not up to me to determine who is in this country "legally". Its up to
law enforcement. Prince Willy got it right. Fairfax will follow when we rid
ourselves of self serving politicians who are living in a dream world.
If you are in this country legally, you have no problem. Sorry about
your illegal maid. Be sure and take some pictures so you will have something to
remember about your era of the exploitation of labor.

So what variables are the police using to decide who might be in the country illegally? How are they going to suspect people in the car are not legal ? They are going to most likley use race. So what happens when a hispanic, Mexican, or Puerto Rican forgets their license at home?, or is in the passengers seat of a vehicle that is stopped by officers ?( there is no law in the US requiring anyone not driving to carry an id on them except to make certain purchases). Then what ? there is already a law suite of a wrongful deportation on the West Coast. So it is understandable for immigrants to be scared and feel unwelcomed in PW county. This is pretty much guilty till proven innocent. What is the procedure for reporting someone to immigration who is sucpected of being here illegally ? will someone who happened to leave their green card at home that day be wrongfully deported ?( remember there is no law that people have to carry an id on them ) Will cops have to document every traffic stop they conduct ? Will there be better monitoring of traffic stops to make sure race isn't a motive in the stop ? which it often is and the officers give the worst reasons, occurs often in big cities (Boston, NYC, LA, and I guess will happen here since Manassas needs to be saved from something). So PW is going to hurt for being racist. No one knows who is an illegal immigrant, or how many there are, that nice European couple living at the end of your block could be here illegally. So the soccer league is just one example of people being affraid, and shows how the system is messed up with so many families having legal and illegal immirants among them

This seems to be one of those cases where the cure is worse than the disease. (BTW, I read in the AARP Bulletin that state Medicaid rolls had virtually no illegals on them.)

Sure, we can get rid of illegals if we are:

(1) prepared to undergo a much higher rate of documentation need than we currently have (Your papers, please?)
(2) prepared to fund the construction of a 1,500-mile fence (gee, didn't we complain when the Soviets tried to construct an 80-mile fence?)
(3) prepared to force migrate tens of thousands of people against their will (The Trail of Tears involved maybe 20,000 people and they were all traveling together.)
(4) prepared to break up nuclear families.
(5) prepared to have people serve as informants.

Even going after the employers may not work. The risk there is that instead of going home peacefully, illegals will stick around and become embroiled in crime -- instead of being day laborers, they become drug dealers or simply resort to ordinary theft. On the other hand, that seems to be the least problematic solution to the problem. There would need to be an 800 number where you can check on someone's status within 12-48 hours, so Joe Blow who hires a nanny or a maid can check.

Even the PWC proposal is not risk-free:
You may have many Hispanics afraid to even *talk* to the police (yeah, yeah, I know this only applies to crime suspects, not victims or witnesses.) I'm sure this will do wonders for crime rates.

You may have a wrongful deportation or two, and Prince William will face a multi-million dollar lawsuit. There goes your property taxes.

“exploitation of labor” that is the problem! These people are here illegally, they should be sent back to their own country. They are putting a strain on our country; let’s take care of our own American citizen. We need to do what ever we can to take care of this problem, the government is doing nothing. Just wait and see how bad it really gets.

The cure is worse than the problem. Cops are being pulled off of investigating thefts, rapes and murders to deal with this stuff. People who would inform on MS-13 are now afraid to talk to the cops. Who is leaving PW county? The mostly law abiding Hispanics who just want a job and a decent place to live. Who is staying? The drunk, drug-abusing, gang members who are driving down property values and driving up crime.

As for "what ever we can," do you mean you want to give up services? Should counties switch money away from schools, parks, maintenance, etc, to do enforcement? Should roads go unplowed in the winter? Should potholes be allowed to go unfilled? Should greenways grow over? Should your property and sales taxes go up?

One reason your Fairfax child has no field to play on, or it's worn down to nothing:

"Melvin Ortez, president of Honduras de Manassas, is switching his team to a Fairfax league because half of his players are illegal immigrants."

It's time for Fairfax to follow PW's lead.

"and property taxes are going up 28% to pay for anti-immigration enforcement."

I'd like to know where you get your information from. PWC hasn't even decided what tax rate to advertise yet and the ones they are considering are not going to result in anywhere near a 28% increase in taxes.

What it boils down to is this...It took 1 only 1 hispanic to come into the United States and decide they were not going to bother learning the NATIONAL language and others followed,as a result we are going to wake up one day to a Constitution written in spanish!I speak english,I should not have to learn spanish to order a fuckin burger at Mcdonalds.Americans won't take the low paying jobs because that's just it they are low paying and we don't have 6 or 8 other people to share the rent with!If hispanics have so much "pride" in their culture, country, or language please go back to your countries I sure as hell won't stop you.

Well lets see....

Phony drivers license, No drivers license, No Green Card or a forgery,
Very limited English skills, Fictitious tags, Homeless and limited
English skills, Fake Social Security Number, Runs away when they
see a roadcheck. If they are here legally and have proper ID, No Problem.

like i said there is no law requiring anyone to officially carry an id, so what would having a proper id on them if they were a passenger in a car have to do with anything, look at the wrongful deportation law suite in CA.

Ugh, No they do not pull people over for looking spanish, IF you are pulled over then your citizenship will be checked regardless of who you are. No you do not need a license, but if you give a proper name and DOB and address and your name returns fine they you're good to go. Maybe even a social security number. (You get one of those when you're a citizen).

Let's talk about how Mexico treats their immigrants form Honduras or Guatemala are treated like absolute shit by Mexican police and Mexican gangs frequently rob them as they try to move further north to Amerika.

I will GLADLY show my passport to anyone who wants to see it in authority and say I have proven relatives from the Mayflower.

has anyone stopped and actually examined the 287G program, and taken the time to understand how it works? The only thing that prince william county can do is check the immigration status of an individual that has detained on a criminal charge. if the person in custody is proven to be here illegally, then and only then will ICE begin deportation proceedings. please stop making this out to be a witch hunt---just accept that if you are here illegally, then you are a criminal and will handled accordingly. innocent until proven guilty, just like its always been.

Having a social security number does not prove that you are a citizen.

It actually doesnt prove anything.

Anyone can get SSN, as long as you entered US legally.

You get it, and say your visa expiries - you are still good to go.
