Is Oakton a safe area?
Posted by: New in the area ()

hello everyone.
I was offered a good job in Fairfax VA. My wife and I have been looking at houses and came across a very nice one in Oakton. To help you locate it better it is around the Fairfax Circle area. It seemed like a nice quiet neighborhood but I wanted more opinions about it. Do you know something about the area? is it a safe place to raise a family? we have a 3 month old baby.
thank you for your help.

Don't worry. In a few years, your 3 month old will join a gang and they will ensure he stays safe.

Welcome to Fairfax!

Oakton is on its way out as safe. It use to be a nice area. I'd look at Clifton or Great Falls.

I would look closer in. McLean, N. Arlington, City of Falls Church, will all be safe and continue to do so because of the desirable locations.

FYI, friends of ours in McLean were burglarized in 18 mins, 3 days after Xmas. You can live ANYWHERE and be a victim of a crime. Oakton is fine, IMO

Your housing location should be dictated by two things:

1) What length of commute are you willing to endure? In traffic, my 15 mile inner-county commute can take an hour.

2) What's your budget? Plan to spend $500K+ to live in a safe neighborhood in the county.

What does "inner-county" mean? Did you mean to use "inter" or "intra"?

Also, why do you live so far from your work? And, don't you know any work arounds or back roads?

$500K guarentees you won't live in the barrio, but to be on the safe(r) side, I would plan on spending at least $650K.

I would check out the elementary schools in the area. Look on the FCPS web site. Look at the amount of free or reduced lunches. If the number is high I would stay away. I think you can also look up Zillow.com to tell you about the area you are looking in.

Bling Bling! Who's be your neighbor? Gang bangers. Oakton is among the country's highest per capita, rate of gang bangers according to crime statistics. The Hunter Mill Crew, and the Miller Road Crews have been engaged in violence for years. Turf battles over the shopping centers in between these streets, have been featured on the History Channel's Gangland. Don't even think about it, Compton is laid back compared to Oakton!

The crime around here is laughable. The gangs are jokes. Ammateurs try (unsuccessfully) to rob banks occasionally, but this doesn't affect the average citizen.
Unless you purposely relocate to an area of Oakton that is impoverished, and then place yourself in situations where you're just asking to be a victim, you shouldn't have to worry about anything.
And even if someone did try to mug you or something - like I said, the local criminals are pathetic. I'd be more concerned about the cops.

Are you talking about the sparsely populated area Northwest of 123, or the area bounded by 66, 123, and Jermantown? Or something in between?

Oakton has one of the highest incomes in the county, but that Fairfax Circle area is shit.

From Wikipedia:

According to a 2010 estimate, the median income for a household in the CDP was $167,512, and the median income for a family was $188,308. Males had a median income of $111,856 versus $73,254 for females.

Oakton on west side of Chain Bridge Road aka route 123 good

area near Fairfax Circle very very bad. with all the forthcoming development Look up Metrowest housing development and Mosaic project in Merrifield. this along with other develops coming along the route 29 corridor. Traffic will be much much worse in this area than it already is in the very near future

The part of Oakton you are describing isn't bad, but you can definitely do better if you can afford it. East Oakton (The area around Oakton high school) is safe if your a responsible adult, but if your a teenager there are a lot of negative influences. I don't know how good all the elementary schools are. However, Oakton high school seems to be going downhill (I went there) and the local middle school Luther Jackson is gang banger central.

I would suggest checking out Annandale and Bailey's Crossroads. Much safer than Oakton.

I live in the area you're talking about. It's a nice area with it's own gentrification going on. Schools will most likely be Mosby Woods, Jackson and Oakton. All are good schools. I went to Luther Jackson over 25 years ago. It was a bad school at the time. However, with the aforementioned gentrification it's getting better. All three schools are projected to be undercapicity in the near future which is a good sign. You are close to Vienna Metro, future town centers. The best part of this part of FFX county - you're 1/2 hour from everything. I can get to work in Tysons in 20 minutes. Get to DC (driving)in 30minutes to 45 minutes. Get to Reston/Dulles in less than 1/2 hour.
respond back and I can give you more detials.

In case you don't know any better, he's joking. These are some of the worst areas you could live in, dominated in every sense by (presumably illegal) Hispanics.

Isn't there some report somewhere claiming that Bailey's Crossroads is one of the most walkable places in the state?

http://www.walkscore.com/VA

Yes, nothing screams "walkable" like strip malls, highways and condo towers...

Oakton and Fairfax Circle are different places. Oakton is generally quite good. The Fairfax Circle area not nearly so much (but there are areas near Ffx Circle that are fine, too). Being suspicious, if the seller is calling a Ffx Circle area "Oakton" I might be leery. Do you have more details about where this house is?

I went to Oakton High(graduated in 06) so I will give you my perspective. I wouldnt live too close to the school, as some of the area isnt the best. That being said, it isnt that bad, and is better than the majority of the country. However, if you are really looking to be safe, you can move just 5-10 min from oakton in the Waples Mill/Dartmoor/Oak Hill areas where is it very nice and next to no crime. But be ready to pay for this, as many of the houses in this area are 750k-1.2mil

That area's not really as nice for kids, though, as they're pretty much left with no way to get around until they drive.

I use to live in Oakton. Nice neighborhoods. Can't tell you what the traffic is like, but it's worth checking it out if you are considering it. Check around Vale Rd, Nice homes around there depending what you can afford.

Yes, I would say Oakton/Vienna is a reasonable safe area better than other Fairfax areas. Also we just got the Oakton Public Library across from the Neighborhood Shopping Mall on Rt 123 near Hunter Mill Road corner. A wonderful resource for kids and families. Attached is a photo from a recent event at the Oakton Public LIbrary about the Gray Ghost duing Civil War

20171 is the safest zip code in the county. Look there.

If your heart is set on Oakton, watch out for the 17 year-old drunk drivers speeding their way through neighborhoods, crashing into parked cars and killing their passengers.

IMO, zip code is somewhat important, but good neighbors make for the best deterent to crime. Kings Park West is a 'hood with a great sense of community and we all look out for each other without being intrusively nosey. Plus, for a commuting, it's very convenient here - express buses to the Pentagon and the VRE is just five minutes away.

It's not a prestigious 'hood, but it is one with great neighbors who care and convenience without overprice.

Just IMMHO. Where ever you move, make sure there is a sense of community if you are interested in low crime. Price is not a great indication of that. In my experience, some of the most expensive communities are populated with neighbors who have no interest in their neighbors. Perfect situation for theft.
