Are there any places around here that will help a person maintain a computer? My Windows desktop is completly fucked and slow, I don't know what to do with it.

Find a mom and pop computer place. DON'T take it to best buy or any of those type of places.

ghostface, I used to do that kind of work so I would be able to help you nominally. I can at least look at it and tell you what I think.

make an account and private mesage me.

but yeah: avoid best buy at all costs

I used Geek Squad and thought they did a great job. They helped repair my computer remotely. It cost about $125.

Computer Warehouse in Tysons Corner has some real knowledgeable tech people working there. They seem like they focus more on hardware, but it wouldn't hurt giving them a call. They are located in the Tysons Station shopping center (the one with Trader Joe's).

I used to repair PCs on the side. Of course that was before today's situation where what it costs to make a one-hour job worth the bother of a tech would pay for half a new computer.

You could always take the money you throw away in repairs and just get an Apple. Then you won't have to worry about where to go to fix stuff.

yeah because you will just have to send it back to apple where they will wipe your drive and reinstall OSX (and none of your software... oh, and kiss all your files goodbye). oh, but dont worry, selling your firstborn child just to afford one isnt a big deal. i mean, come on, you get an OS with poor software support and a strange interface.

Well, if your speaking from experience, your first mistake was taking any computer to Best Buy to have repairs. I guess you haven't yet figured out what an incompetent bunch of idiots they are there.

Second, having had PC's and Macs, I can't imagine what you could have done to your Mac to require reinstalling the OS (unless you were upgrading to a newer one). Even then, it saves all your files.

Blame whatever happened to you on the morons at Best Buy, not Apple.

Best place I've found (cheap, does work, fast, etc.) ... they do work all over Northern VA but mostly focus in Mt. Vernon.

Even a moron like Rush Limbaugh can't get his Mac working.

clearly you havent had a job as a tech. there are lots of reasons to reinstall OSX, and like windows, they all suck.

why would i waste my money one something that i know how to do myself? life has been much nicer since i ditched windows. i tried mac plenty and i do not like the clumsy interface or the "you dont need to do know that, stay away!" attitude that OSX presents you with. besides, OSX lacks software and hardware, big time.
