Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
New to the area and new to homeownership and I could use some advice.
We have a malfunctioning a/c unit that is getting replaced. The service technician will remove it and dispose of the freon for a $200 fee, but I see on the Ffx Hazerdous Waster site that I can take some items (not really clear about freon) at no cost.
Question is - how do I take it? Can I just take the entire a/c window unit to the drop-off site?

That's probably what the A\C guy is going to do. They are suppose to use a "freon recovery unit" but most will just vent the freon. It's a huge fine if your caught venting freon. I think something like $5000. The dump use to require you to remove the freon before disposing of the unit.

Well, I was going to say, "I see that you are new here..." but then my snarkiness would be epic fail.
If you want an indication of the atmosphere of this forum, try clicking a link where the subject involves a local NOVA-ite whose name you don't recognize dying and see how people flame the corpse.
That's just how things roll here and we don't apologize for it. Don't bother complaining about it as that will draw flames as well. It takes a big bag of knuckles to post here. Oh and see Gonads & Strife or Mr. Misery for your chinstrap and protective cup. A grammar textbook and White's Book of Style would also be advisable less you get proverbially gunned down by English language jihadists.
where exactly is this said unit located? I'll bring over my party bag and hook it up to the side and fill it with the freon and we'll all have a blast!
If you are served by the county for waste removal there is a special pick service for freon containing appliances. No charge, just a generous limit per year (something like max 6 pickups).
Is it R-22? You could sell it on Craigslist as "reclaimed" freon. Just be careful about who you sell it too. You don't want to get nabbed by selling without state certification.
Nothing uses Freon anymore even though it was outlawed because it supposedly ate the ozone but then they found out it doesn't eat the ozone but that was after automakers and such switched to the new higher priced refrigerant and then the Govt said oh we made a mistake plz use Freon but then then the Freon users said who cares? we like the higher priced stuff cuz it makes us more money.
I don't care how old ur shit is, it ain't Freon. Put it in the trash and stop wasting bandwidth.
Fuck obama.

It seems to me, at the end of the day, with all that being said, that's not necessary.

As a homeowner or a do-it-yourselfer you should be allowed to vent the freon into the air. The HVAC service guy can't do this by law.
I would just cut the line and say that is why it's being replaced. If you have green neighbors do it at night or while they are at work. You could just vent it on the inside of the house just open a window.

"Freon Recovery" is a joke. Let the shit loose. Who is going to catch you?
If it's a window unit you definitely don't have enough to worry about getting caught let it fly! Just so you know even if it's empty they'll probably find a way to charge you. WE LOVE MONEY!!!

Wow!! Did he really just say something stupid....yeah, he is a real snark! You were mild calling him that. I would have called him other things. You are too kind. So sorry about his nasty remarks, there was no need for it. Best of luck. I'm now in your position and am getting ready to do the same thing. Any ideas? Please let me know.
Wow!!! you're an idiot!! he was basically asking a good question!!! Why do you have to respond with such STUPIDITY!!!!!!!! YOU PROBABLY DRINK THE STUFF, THAT'S WHY YOU ARE THE WAY YOU ARE! I FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR STUPIDITY!!!

it's provable any day in a lab it DOES eat ozone
it's a chain reaction that never stop IF temperatures allow
it's only a few degrees ON AVERAGE that keep it from going continuously

It's provable any day in a lab that fire consumes oxygen.
It's a chain reaction that never stops if temperatures allow.
It's only a few degrees ON AVERAGE that keep it from going continuously.
It's repeatable in a lab.
That doesn't mean that the dynamic system that is the Earth's atmosphere is going to be consumed by fire.

Post it for free recovery to a license HVAC contractor on craigslist and charge a $50 fee to access your property. The HVAC tech gets R22 and you get $50 for letting them on your property.
