shit happens! Unplugging you modem wont work unless you remove the battery which is a pain in the arse.

What you need to do is reset the modem. If yours is a Motorola modem, look for a tiny pinhole in the back that is labeled "Reboot EMTA". The only thing I found to hit that button in the hole is a flattened out staple. Stick it in and hold for about 10 seconds. It will then take the modem about 45 seconds to completely reboot and you will be in business.

Yep!

VERY FAST and the cost is reasonable. Our one acct. is $109/mo. for 2 yrs. A BOAT LOAD less than we had been paying for a Verizon line w/ cox tv and modem.

BTW, FIOS is coming to the western end of Burke in the next couple of months. March is what I heard ;-)

That's only if you have a VOIP modem. If you don't have a cox phone line then you most likely will have a morotolla surfboard.

they are REALLY dragging their feet on putting in the fiber cable. seems to me that hiring more contractors to install it would be a good idea. i would get it but it's been like three years and it's STILL not in my neighborhood.

"john who cares" . I got cox too. Trying changing your ip all together. It's a pain in the ass to change your ip with cox but its possible. Drop your old Ip through "cmd" command prompt. Then dissable your connection. Then unplug everything from your computer and the wall and leave it overnight. You should have a new ip by the next morning but make sure to write down your old one to compare it with a new one. Maybe with a new ip it wouldn't be a problem. I havn't noticed any change in speed since I have sighned up for cox. Then again it may be all porn you are trying to download all at once, who knows. Shit like kazaa and winmx usually slow down your connection.

Dropping the ip depends on how long COX keeps the lease on the address, Ive seen them go for 6 days before DNS flushes the ip address. You may want to have COX release and then renew by force the ip address

release and renew method doesn't work with cox. You have to be disconnected for long enought for the ip to be assighned to someone elso. You have to leave the modem/router disconnected for 6-12 hours before they will assighn you a new one.

They need to be careful about that. They got into a shitload of trouble two years ago when they were running roughshod all over Vienna and Oakton doing their FIOS installs. They were hitting gas lines, lawn sprinkler systems, irrigation lines, tearing up driveways, and generally making a mess of the areas where they were digging. In one case, IIRC, they hit some family's undergrond power line and the strike nearly burned the house to the ground. Something like $200,000 in damage from what I had heard.

Uploading some files last night on the cox network, it peaked at 1,000kb/s.

At this point I see no reason for Fiber, until the prices comes down and speeds go up.

Agreed, i got 8 mbps dl last night. is 9pm a peak period?

To get my IP changed, i call up cox and ask them to reset my modem and renew my extrernal ip addy from their end.

I think I found the problem. I have old Motorola 1100PCXU which uses Docsis 1.1. Cox told me I have to get a new DOCSIS 2.0 modem. I am not sure it will fix the problem but I'm going to buy a new one over the weekend. I used to get over 400k/s but now its more like 100k. Sux.

john,
have a cable guy come out and troubleshoot the problem. i have my doubts about changing out the cable modem will fix it BUT if the cable guy comes by and swaps in a new cable modem and it works better, they will let you keep it, free of charge. it's better than dropping $100 on something that may not even help.

I could have cable guy to come out here to fix the problem but they would charge me for the call anyway whether he fixes it or not. Does anyone know if i can buy cable modem at costco?

It depends, sometimes Costco has the modem, sometimes not. I replaced my motorola modem about a year ago but Costco (Chantilly and Fairfax) didn't have it but Target had one called a D Link DCM 202 which has been cranking ever since, cost me about 50.00.
