Can anyone tell me about their experience with Silverbrook Elementary School? We are considering buying ahouse in that district.

Silverbrook is a good school, but it is full now. When Lorton Station ES is built it should help reduce student population. The only thing, it feeds into South County Secondary school. The school is overcapacity and the test scores are awful. The area is going to go through a boundary study next year, and we all know how much fun that is. One side of Silverbrook may be sent to Lake Braddock, which is a very good school, that is the side to buy on. Look at the posts under “Which schools pyramids in FFX county are "desirable"? If you are still looking to buy a house.

It's a good school. Go online and read about the school. There is lots of information about the county schools that you can read.

I don't think any elementary school should have over 1,000 kids. Too crowded...no thanks.

Lorton Station has been open for several years now. I think you mean the new school being built accross the street from SCSS in Laurel Hill. South County has good scores...you need to check that out too. Lots of students take AP classes; good challenge index score. They have already won pretty prestigious awards (the ones that come to mind at the moment are Cappies best play, and some state recognition for best band) though this is only their third year.

Silverbrook is pretty crowded, though. The other elementary schools around it are also good.

SCSS has rotten scores. Even South Lakes (to which nobody wants to get redistricted) has better scores as you can see on page 3 of http://www.fcps.edu/mediapub/pressrel/sat2007.pdf

Those are SAT scores, which not all students take.

Looking at the minimum competency scores you'll see a different picture.

All of the FCPS are simply wonderful. I taught for 40 years in an elementary school, and my experiences have been fantastic. My grandchildren are enrolled in Silverbrook, and they love their teachers, staff, and faculty members. If you are interested in a school, call to make an appointment for a visit and tour of the school. Many people do that kind of thing before they make an investment in their long-term living arrangements. We all want what's best for our children.

I liked Silverbrook. sixth grade was the three best years of my youth.

Silverbrook has to run family events in shifts because it is so overcrowded. Half the time they just cancel them so as to not have an A Night and B Night.
