UPDATE – Identity Released
Fairfax County Police have identified the deceased man as Brent W. Shorter, 51, of no fixed address.
Officer Involved Shooting in Franconia
Officers from the Franconia District Station responded to a complaint of a man with a knife behind a restaurant at the Rose Hill Shopping Center, 6138 Rose Hill Drive at 5:20 this evening (1/11/08). Arriving officers encountered a white male in his 50s at that location, holding a knife in one hand. He ignored the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife, advanced on the officers and was shot in the chest. He was dead on arrival at Inova HealthPlex at Franconia-Springfield, 6355 Walker Lane.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. He is a 26-year-old patrol officer assigned to the Franconia District Station and has been with the department for just under four years.

You don't "discover" that you've been robbed. You know immediately that you're being robbed while it's happening. You might discover that you've been burglarized or scammed. What this guy did was not robbery. It's just fraud, or more appropriately, a con. Robbery involves violence or intimidation. The bank is probably trying to spin this as a "robbery" to try to get their insurance company to cover it, since they probably don't cover run of the mill stupidity (like handing over $500,000 to a guy just because he has the right suit on)
