Revamp of University Mall (Fairfax City/GMU)

There is a sign out in the corner of the property of University Mall basically saying that new development is coming to revitalize the shopping center. The concept art on the sign looks like stock photography however. Anyone have any idea what the design/plans are? Will the stores be closing down temporarily? Any chance Giant gets a facelift or possibly the return of Harris Teeter to FFX City?

I don't care what else stays or goes, but I'd hate to lose the University Mall theater. It's got to be one of the last little family-run movie theaters around. It's very kid-friendly--and cheap!

plus the kinkos fedex place is the most friendly & convenient of these type of support places ever

going in there, i always get great support & get whatever i need with good help

hope the good parts stay in any renovation

I haven't been there in quite a while, but FairFax City limits ended a couple of miles on 123 before you would get to Braddock Rd.??? Unless that changed?

I remember there was a Mr Gettys pizza and beer up stairs and a peanut bar downstairs. There was a preppy bar upstairs, but they spent more on bouncers then they did on cute waitresses and bartenders. Giant was the big atraction except when dart drug had unbelievable sales on beer.

But that was a long time ago...

I am pretty sure they are moving the bank, and upscaling it (M&T) to a fancy new one. They are keeping the giant. what else?

I bet this project is another half ass attempt to be the next Fairfax Corner but will be more like Fairfax Town Center.

UNLESS they do something to embrace the GMU community.

The University Mall is being renovated at a cost of approximately $20 million. Construction should start in about six months. University Mall Theater will stay as well as all the other stores. There will be addional buildings built, including a drive through McDonald's. Mall squarefootage will increase by about a third. The mall would like to have Giant renovate as well, but that has not been finalized. This has aLL been presented in a series of community meetings.

are they giving up space for the interchange? and since there will be more stores, will they be giving any $$$$$$ to help? Since they are bringing more traffic to the area, you'd think that would be the case.........................

It would be excellent if the powers that be will fly the Somali flag with pride at the redeveloped shopping center!

They did this in Minnesota and everyone from Somalia was very grateful to be so welcomed and embraced by the local community.

Wow...that's the only time I've heard Fat Tuesday's referred to as "a peanut bar." I spent many nights there during my days at Mason when it was basically a hole-in-the-wall dive. Last time I was there it looked like it still is.

Does anyone remember what the name of the old record store was called at University Mall back in the 80's? In the late 80's it was called The Body Electric, but before that.....?

Don't remember the name, but I do remember the store well. I bought a super fly Beatles poster in 1990 and lent it to a boyfriend... never saw it again.
