Outdoor shooting ranges in NoVA?

Anyone know of any outdoor shooting ranges that don't require membership to an organization or club???

Tired of frequenting the two shitty/tiny indoor ranges in our area (Blue Ridge/NRA) which are usually crowded and require an extensive wait just to get an hour of trigger time in, not to mention the costs of range time!

A bit out of the way but still worth checking out I guess. Is it a free public range or do you pay a fee? And if you do, are there time limits?

The range is free to use, BUT, you gotta buy the ammo from them. Its a bit more expensive than normal, but you;ll still come out ahead.

Ouch...Do they allow you to fire buckshot there or is it still slugs like the indoors ranges? Been wanting to pattern my shotgun and compare the different choke tubes I've purchased but can't find anywhere to do it.

Got any idea how much .22lr is there as well?

Yes you can shoot buckshot, they have a shotgun range with trap slings and a target holder setup as well

I dont know what the cost for .22 would be but I can assure you that their markup is not nearly as steep as using NRA or Blue Ridge for an hour, talk about expensive, WTF!

340 Defense is outdoors and very cool, but it's like 10 miles south of Charles Town.

I just looked that up. $300 a year membership but only open to members on Saturday and Sunday without an appointment? If I'm paying 300 a year, I expect to go any time I want. We need more places that have long distance shooting. All of these local ranges are 25 yard and 50 yards. That's not much of a challenge with a high powered rifle.

You might want to take a look at this place when it opens in the Fall, it is out near Clarke Bros..

Just keep in mind that the DGIF range only allows the following.

ONLY RIFLES, MUZZLE LOADING RIFLES OR SHOTGUNS SHOOTING AT STATIONARY TARGETS ARE
ALLOWED.

Just buy a couple acres out in WV for only a few thousand dollars and stick a trailer on it.

Heh, still a college student with an expensive hobby. Otherwise I probably would have just moved to WVA completely and only come around NoVA on the weekends to party and socialize.

Only open from sept-march? That sucks. Not too many people want to shoot in the cold.

Best place I know of is a word of mouth place in Penn. Free range on private land (open to the public) that is on mining land. About 200 yards and people have even built some shooting benches. People come and shoot whatever they want, when ever they want at whatever they want.

It's the perfect place, but just too far for me to go regularly.

The Cove in Gore VA is nice if you have a 4-wheeler or a big truck, or if you wouldn't mind hiking with guns and ammo and target for an hour. If you don't mind a long drive, go down to Blacksburg. It's a 4 hour drive, but if you have somebody you can stay with for a couple of days it's worth it. Nice rifle range, nice shotgun range which is pretty much you bring everything you need, no charge, open sunrise to sunset. I haven't found anything like the Blacksburg one up North. It's a shame.

It's not outdoors, but it's not blueridge or NRA either. I'm a member at Sharpshooters (used to be Gilberts). I like to shoot there and I also have the option of using Quanitco's outdoor ranges (I'm military).

Sharpshooters is pricey with their memberships fees, etc. But you can do the $6 for a month of membership and $10 for an hour to see if you like it.

Best part- they upgraded the backstop to handle anything up to .30-06! Bad news is that it is only 22 yards to the stops.

Range was empty a couple weeks ago because ammo is in short supply. They're not even selling ammo unless you rent a gun from them.

So bring your stuff and blast away.

Don't buy a gun from 'em- way overpriced.
