Speaking of pizza, anybody like Ledo's stuff?

It's one of those things that is great when eating it, then you regret eating it as you leave the restaurant.

I've always liked it since college days in College Park (er...Adelphi).

The original Ledo's there, however, recently closed! Tragedy! Now they're probably-futilely trying to reestablish themselves in DOWNTOWN College Park! Ain't gonna happen...

Someplace in this garage (used to be a really nice little house here, then a parking lot, now this):

whoever owns the one on westfield blvd is a real prick. twice he's screwed up my order, and he wont let me get tomato sauce AND mayo on my sub because "they arent good together". obviously the customer isnt always right. he fucked up my order a 2nd time when i asked for two pizzas, and he accidently made 3. then he tried to charge me for the 3rd, and said I wasn't being clear on the phone. that middle eastern prick probably doesnt understand english.

QFT.

While I would never go out of my way for Ledo's, I really enjoy their pizzas.

But whenever I do I'm squirting within a few hours.

It's true. I too noticed this morning that the original Ledo's in College Park is closed for good. I searched around a little this morning and could only find a posting on Don Bridge's website that Ledo's had sold to another entrepreneur so that Ledo's could concentrate on other locations.

Too bad about the original Ledo's closing. I've had a lot of good times
there. The store on 29 near Wegmans is fine with me but it will never
be as good as the original. The place had a regular crowd and lots of
atmosphere. For some reason the food just tasted better but then maybe
it's because as a college student I was usually in party mode anyway.

First, lets remember that their pizza is square because they don't cut corners. Second, can you blame them for leaving that shithole neighborhood? Its pizza for Christ sake, not tacos y burritos.

I'll bet Tick Tock and the Golden Bull move before too long, as well.

Is the Tick Tock still open? Last I heard the owner was in deep shit.

Ledo's sauce is way to sweet and the crust is like pastry. Even the pepperoni tastes like it is full of sugar. Nothing like Ciro's.

BTW, where is that new garage in CP? Is this behind the 'Vous? Purple Pizza had good slices, although no pain is greater than trying to shove down an oven-fresh slice drunk.

Yup, it's on Knox Road across from the city hall (you can click on the street view above and it'll take you to the full-screen google maps image). The 'Vous, however (as with the Varsity Grill (my personal fave)) has long been history.

Purple Pizza...gawd, I must have put those guys thru college just with my purchases there. I don't remember, tho, what it was called when I used to go there; don;t believe it was called Purple Pizza at the time (mid 70s).

BTW - it appears Purple Pizza has gone away as well - not surprised, that place really depended on Varsity Grill and Vous patrons...or lawn concert ones.

Purple Pizza was perfectly situated between the Vous and Frat Row. Sometimes, there would be lines snaking through the outside parkinglot. We would sometimes leave the Vous early just to beat the rush. The best though was the free wings at Santa Fe, made several dinners on those during the summer. Not familiar with the Varsity Grill, maybe that is what Santa Fe used to be.

What did they raze to make the garage? Wasn't there some sorority houses there?

The Varsity Grill was directly across the street from the Purple Pizza and extended deeply up toward campus - big enough to have a full venue for band concerts, etc. It closed down (maybe with the drinking age raise from 18?) and an Italian joint took its place. I do not know what is there now, however the extended back part has long since been converted to other venues (I believe the back part angled off to Knox Road - that's undergone lots of facelifts etc since).

The garage is sitting where two houses and a city parking-meter parking lot sat for years (Yale Avenue). That lot was built where a very quaint little house used to sit.

BTW - some people suspect some less-than-aboveboard happenings w.r.t. the two houses that were bought and destroyed to make room for the garage (not the original house that was bought and destroyed for the parking lot decades ago). take a look at this Maryland Assessments page - see about 6 lines up from the bottom for the properties labeled "College Park City" (7306/08)? Click on one and look at the sales prices...lol!

I use to live across the street from the original Ledo's pizza in Adelphi. Use to go there until we moved away in the mid 70's. The Ledo's in Virginia is not the same as in College Park/Adelphi.

While googling this I see that King Kong is still near here! Lol! I got married in the PG Courthouse ("Next!" (you have to experience it to know the true meaning of "Next!"...)) and took my folks and new-in-laws there for the big "reception" dinner! Lol!

King Kong? damn, they used to have punk bands play in there in the 80's.

I bet you old fucks still remember the Sizzler across from Seven Seas.

I know Cluck U is gone, at least from its original location.

I think Seven Seas used to be called Golden Pagoda...but don't hold me to that vague memory; whatever it was called it WAS the Chinese restaurant we used most often, though I think there was a good one south on Kenilworth from Calvert road, too, past the moose/elk/god-knows-what lodge.

The Ledo's that was originally at the Sully Station shopping center theoretically was set up by someone or for someone affiliated with the original Ledo's. But within a blink of an eye they had a sign out saying "New Management".

So, did you work for new or old management?

==========

In other news, that particular spot has seen restaurants come and go with alarming frequency - bad feng shui or something (I can't even remember the same of the two or three Ledo's predecessors in the same spot over the time I've been walking on up there).

And, as we know, the Korean market down the lane that JUST went in JUST went out in half a blink of an eye.

Not a shopping center positioned for success - at least not until they put in shops that work for those WALKING to the center or dropping in for convenience stuff - blah restaurants and BIG food markets simply aren't right for the Sully Station shopping center.

They're camel jockeys at Ledos?

Btw, do they put a lot of sugar in their sauce or something?

Depends on who owns the franchise. http://www.ledopizza.com/franchise-info-2.cfm

Their sauce does tend to be sweeter than most but that's one of the reasons
why I like it occasionally for a little variety.

The new Ledo's on Route 1 in the Mount Vernon area is the worst Ledo's I have eaten. Do not judge Ledo's pizza from that one. The best one in Virginia is in Fairfax/Falls Church area. Stay awa from the one on Route 1.

WOW........brings back lots of good memories! Relocated since college, but visited the area on a recent trip. Things look quite different now. I fondly recall hitting up spots like "The Rendezvous Inn" (the Vous) which was practically a freshman "rite of passage" back then. Still don't know how we made it back home (or to the dorms) some nights??? All the local joints nearby saved us from starvation that late. Places like ; PURPLE PIZZA, White Castle, Howie's Arcade & especially SUBWAY (which was open 24hrs & delivered to campus). My dorm alone must have paid that guy's mortgage....ha ha. I stopped by the area recently (X-MAS 2013) things look TOTALLY different now. It's more "commercial" opposed to back in the late 80's (total "college town" then). Oh well, that's CHANGE for ya......GO TERPS !!!

While its nothing like New York style, sometimes a change is good. The Ledos in Springfield on Old Keene Mill Road is really good. The owner couldn't be nicer.

I used to hang at Town Hall. Went through CP a couple of
years ago on a Saturday and it's turned into a barrio. Thugs
hanging on the sidewalk with nothing much to do. Sad.
