I was just notified that a girl from my school committed suicide and I can’t help but feel partially involved.

Her real name is Kristina Gerl, but I did not find that out until today. Everyone called her “soul stealer†because of the way she looked. extremely pale skin, almost white hair, she may be considered albino. She’d dye her hair many colors and put on dark lipstick to give herself an even scarier appearance.

Kristina was laughed at, taunted, judged, bullied by a lot of people, including me. I never directly said anything to her but when she came up in a conversation, I’d always be participating in the ridicule.

I found out she was suffering from depression when she ran away from home and a friend of mine reached his hand out to help her and get her home safely. After my friend told me about this, I knew I had to stop talking about her the way I did.

However, I did not stop other people from talking about her. I still listened to their conversations without saying anything, in fear of being judged. I let them laugh at her. And sometimes, still, I laughed along with them.

January 1st 2011 was the day Kristina killed herself. Of course technically, it would be considered a suicide, but I think it was more of a quiet murder. A murder we committed out of ignorance and fear of being judged.

You have no idea how much I want to go back and take back all these bad words I said about her. You have no idea how much I just want to go and give her a hug and tell her that everything is going to be okay. You have no idea how much I want to go back and tell everyone who made fun of her to stop.

There is only one thing I can do now and that is prevent other murders like these from happening. Please do not bully anyone. Even if you’re friends are having a conversation about someone, failing to prevent them from saying something about that person is just as bad as being in the conversation yourself. Who gives a shit about being judged when someones life is at stake?

I still am quite shaken by what just happened.

Kristina, I hope you found peace.

While I am all for flaming the dead as we have done in other posts here for other people, I think "the regulars" here should not bully her in death as others did to her in life.

Kristina suffered from depression. I know how that is for I too suffer from depression. I feel horrible for every bad thought i ever thought about her, for she only needed someone to talk to.

I didn't know this girl but I will say this. Depression is a horrible and unpredictable thing. To blame the parents or school or the girl herself is ridiculous. Sometimes when people are depressed enough there is little that can be done. As for the bullies, they should be ashamed of themselves. However, they are also kids and not mature adults. Hopefully they will discover something about how they should treat people from this terrible situation.

I love people who stood aside while an event unfolded, then try to take intellectual ownership of it when it ends. It is a reflection of personal guilt I guess.

It was not a sweet home life for this girl. Mom, dad--not so supportive. Brother--an abusive prick. Much behind the scenes that surmounted in very low self esteem. This in itself lends for an easy target to bullying especially by high school assholes. Sadly the world was stacked up against her. The people who should have been there by her side through thick and thin, to offer true meaningful help, cared less. In fact, thought it was helpful to have guns in the house.

I know i didnt know kristina too well, but i know she was a great person. Been in school with her for the past 6 years now (almost half my life) and never has she said a wrong about me.
