Fairfax Underground seems like a breeding ground for Junkies hate. I'm not sure I understand it. By lack of options, they're the best bet for talk radio in the morning. Having said that, feel free to sound off on why you don't like them.

Their show used to have an almost "no limits" boundary to it. Since the station they're on went over to all sports, they stopped being more of an entertainment station.

yeah, I should add I just started listening to the Junks about a year ago. I heard their shtick hasn't changed in years, though.

They bitch about having to work, they make more money than 99% of their audience, they're lazy, and they try to get everything free/comped. Plus, they've gotten boring. Other than that, they're okay.

I hate that they know nothing about sports, they just look up stats on the internet and read them off. For instance the other day none of them knew why the Chargers have a poor record right now, despite statistically being the #1 offense and #1 defense in the entire league.

As a general football fan (who's watched maybe part of 1 SD game, and caught some highlights) I even knew it was because they were by far a turnover machine.

The "pros" stumble for a while, making incorrect assumptions off the top of their heads before they finally load up on the internet the turnover numbers and get it right.

For being a sports show, they really don't know too much about sports (that isn't the Redskins or betting). At least today's sports in 2010. Time is passing them by.

I don't hate them. They're not entertaining and not worth listening to anymore. Years ago, they were the show that got me interested in talk radio. Previously, I thought it was stupid to listen to people yammer away on the radio; radio was for music. But now they don't know sports and don't engage in the edgier/funnier stuff they used to years ago. When I stopped listening (about a year ago) they were phoning it in then, very little effort. I gather that hasn't changed. They were awesome when they were nights on the old JFK.

Here is what I don't like about the Sports Junkies...

1. They aren't very good. They don't have the chops to be on morning drive radio in a major market. They lucked into it because Michael Hughes was a fucking moron (hence why he is spinning records part-time in Annapolis now). I have not problem with them being Midday, Evenings or Overnights. But they are not Morning Drive caliber "talent."

2. With the exception of Lurch, they don't know shit about Sports...which is in their fucking NAME! They don't care, they don't try and it shows.

3. Jesus, these guys are 40! I can't stand people I know in their 40s trying to act like they are in college still. Why the fuck would I want to listen to that on the radio?

They used to know a fair bit about sports when they were doing nights on WJFK. Now - not so much. Their act hasn't changed since they were doing overnights which is biggest issue. At least acts like Stern and D&M have/had some evolution to their shows.

Actually it would be step up for the Lurchie. Right now he's probably trying to Bonefish soccer momz in the 35-40 age range, and if you believe what's been posted above, not having too much success...

I thought the show went well last week without EB. It actually flowed from topic to topic, there was equal input from all, not a lot of inane yelling and comments and maybe best (besides EB being gone) Bret seemed to be less involved. There weren't a lot of opinions spewed as factual information. The only thing funnier then when EB makes fun of another person for their stupidity is when Lavar does it.

Anyways did I hear the Lurch Papa is getting himself a $90,000ish Audi A8? Mike Wise needs to hit the bricks anyway, his show is the absolute worst. I can't believe they have stayed with him this long. He always brings up the Washington Post like he is this great writer. Have you read his columns? It's not much better than his radio show.

The Junkies using Sirius/XM as a bargaining chip is equivalent to throwing the gun at an assailant after all the bullet's have missed. It's a ploy, and frankly all they have in their arsenal to use as a public bargaining chip. Sure, they may have had conversations with Sirius, but so what. They aren't a national brand, and they come with four salaries in a market where the landscape has changed drastically since their last contract was inked.

The Junkies essentially sold their "house" at the peak of the market, Stern was leaving terrestrial radio, the Guy Talk format was still thought to be a viable, and locally and nationally they were looking for talent to plug the hole Stern was leaving. Since then, the format has collapsed, and the way we choose to be entertained by music and talk as been divided by ever more choices and technology. The recession hasn't helped,causing the entertainment backwater of terrestrial radio to drop even further on the ladder where advertisers want to invest. Toss in the PPMs,which add more accuracy to indicate where and to what people are actually listening and the Junkies are clearly worth less now than they were when they last signed on the dotted line.

Yes, their act, which is bordering on self-parody at this point, and has grown stale, but they are apparently locked into riding it out as long as someone will pay. If they make the reported 250K each,it's doubtful CBS in the current market is going to offer them the same deal. Radio as an industry has scaled way back,and the Junkies are subject to the same pressure. You don't need a big forehead to know that you can probably replace the Junkies at a fraction of the cost and maintain the current middle of pack overall ratings and still do fairly well in the key demos. And while the option of getting a gig at Sirius might be freeing in terms of not having to self-censor, there certainly won't be a bidding war for the services of the Junkies, who are after all a local "talent" and wouldn't add any significant numbers to the subscription base.

So, the Junkies are metaphorically living in a house which is worth much less than when they bought it, and any on-air remonstrating about CBS,Sirius, and any other thing they pull out of their ass is all posturing. I don't hate on these guys, they have carved out a decent local niche, but got very lucky in terms of timing when they signed their last contract. They know this, and should be making plans to scale down their own lifestyles,unless they have connections or possible gigs outside of radio which will pay them more. Who knows. But any future radio gigs will have at least one less zero on the end of any pay stub. Also, I wonder if or how much pressure has been exerted to "break up the band", I mean, how many morning radio shows have a cast of four full time members, that want an equal paycheck ? Who is the lead singer and guitar player,and who are the drummer and bassist ? Surely, somewhere someone has been figuring that one could cut the chaff by axing two of the donks and not lose much,and save a boatload of "money"

Sirius stock trades at under $2 a share. The company has never made any money. I can't imagine what they would be putting on the table for The Junkies that would be enticing...unless their option is working at Toys R Us again.

XM/Sirius will entertain two types of talent: 1. those who will work for free, for example all of the "Virus/202" shows excluding Ron and Fez and Opie and Anthony; and 2. Talent that will expand the subscriber base, Opra is a high-end example.

O&A made all sorts of noise about leaving XM/Siri during their recent contract renegotiation, but in the end, having no takers in terresterial radio, they took the pay cut XM/Siri offered.

I don't see the Junkies on XM/Siri unless they take even less than CBS will offer at JFK because they'd be starting over from nothing and they won't make the slighest dent in adding to the subscriber base.

Next careers for the boys: selling cars at the dealerships they pimp on JFK; greeter at the Borgata, or more likely the new gambling mecca in Charles Town; or they shut up, take the pay cut and stay @ JFK.
