ads told consumers they were more fuel efficient (lie, drive axels did not waste fuel). they were more resilient (lie - they broke easier). they were better in snow (mostly a lie: a rear wheel vehicle with weight in the back is just as good - but really chains and snow tires and ground clearance are more important - not FWD)

problem? hell yes. mechanics immediately hated them and their fears would all come true:

4) lying to consumer that "they are more fuel efficient and better and anything asian is better than american old poo"

as it turned out they were NOT more fuel efficient and their repair schedules were far worse

1) ALLOT less room to work on things. they were terrible for mechanics.

2) having to pull both transmission and engine when only 1 is needed

3) impossible to get repair parts. all of these were "make them once throw away the key". impossible to do repair procedures. (you need a new one)

5) after gaining "footing" and investment cash from that false market - the asians changed their story and BEGAN MAKING REAR WHEEL DRIVE - which previously they couldn't do. DANA. drive shafts and gear boxes - which USA STOPPED MAKING AND OUTSOURCED TO CHINA coincidentally - when asians began "the switch".

you never saw anything on tv except that "FWD is the future of all cars"

but it wasn't and isn't: it's a lie

that little grey part has to take all the stress of driving. all that stress in a little box could only be handled by high tech metals and superior machining: THAT'S A JOKE it's made in china they didn't do any of that

it then also has to have ALL THE UP GEARS necessary for efficiency (ie, 1,2,3,+overdrive). but they often didn't: didn't fit in the little box.

it also takes up a huge amount of space mechanics need to work - kills it



it sits in-between passengers not in the engine compartment. a good place to be.

* this trans obviously is longer and, not unbelievably, can handle more stress over a longer period of time without failure. the "gasoline loss of the drive shaft" is actuall NEGLIGABLE. the reason why is THE SHAFT to rear wheels spins relatively slowly
