You have to go west to Fauquier and Warren counties to see bear.

Foxes are very good at hiding themselves from people, but there's probably a few living quite close to you.

Watch out if you let your cats out of the house. Foxes seriously fuck up cats, for some reason they feel really threatened by them.

Virginia is bringing back the Elk. We should start to see more Sasquatch. They love elk meat.

Lots of foxes. You're more likely to hear them than see them.

I have a family of raccoons in my yard, and a few winters back I had the chance to watch their baby as he made his way down the tree for the first time. A family of fox live here as well, and they den in my neighbor's yard. The fox is funny, because I just saw him again the other night, and he always uses the sidewalk for his late night strolls lol.

We also had huge cat paw-prints sighted by a neighbor recently, and they were either from the 40 lb. Bobcat that was witnessed in the area a few years ago, or they were from a transient Mountain Lion.

As for Black Bears, they're rare, but they do show up. Usually they appear in the more heavily wooded sections of the County, such as Clifton.

We have also seen Coyotes in my neighborhood, but the last time they were observed was by a neighbor 10-15 years ago.

Some people claim to see lone Wolves now-and-again near Quantico, and while they're most likely Coyotes, nothing is out of the question to be perfectly honest.

Oh yeah, that Fox scream as well, it took me a while to figure out what it was. It used to freak me out when I was walking near the woods late-at-night, until I figured out what the deal was. Fox make all sorts of noises, and my friend who does security used to always hear a coughing sound at night during his rounds. He swore it was a person, but he never found anyone. Then one night, right when he was looking at the Fox, he heard him make the noise and finally figured it out. I also came across a Fox vs. Raccoon gang fight behind my house one night, and boy, was that one hell of a racket! I broke it up, and they never fought again.

When the Bobcat was around here, a family member of mine swore they heard a woman screaming in the woods. No one was out there, but that's when I remembered that Bobcats and Cougars make those sounds. We also had something slam into our deck gate and shake the wall of the house, and my best guess is that the cat was trying to chase down some prey (Which, lucky for it, managed to slip away through the posts).

Oh, and yeah, there's a particular type of owl that makes a noise almost like a police siren winding up, and I heard that once as well.

You won't believe this, but my naive neighbors still left their cat out after we warned them about the Fox. They called Fairfax Animal Control, and the Animal Control people allegedly told them that Fox don't bother cats. What a load of horseshit. Some fam of mine had their cat killed by a Fox years back, and that was only because her cat accidentally got out. To intentionally leave your pet in harms way though? It's insane (Eventually my neighbor's cat was killed by another neighbor's crazy dog).

I bet my first cat could've really fucked up a Fox back in her prime, though. She regularly laid the smackdown on dogs. Still, I wouldn't let her out of the house.

I used to see a fox every month or two on late night walks in the Clifton/Centreville area. Unfortunately, I've pretty much replaced my late night walks with my mini elliptical, so I haven't seen him in awhile. Gorgeous creature though.

Drive down the GW Parkway south of Old Town around 11 o'clock at night, and there's about a 2 out of 3 chance you'll see a fox. You'll see the eyes in your headlights as they move into the brush when they see a car coming, and you can clearly make out the body shape. They're all over the place out by the river.

Racoons are all around, too, and I hate them. My neighbors went away for several months last year and the racoons built a nest underneath their deck. The little bastards would crawl along the fencetops at night and occasionally take a shit near people's doors. When they fight each other they make the most godawful screeching noises, sounds like babies being put through a meatgrinder. And the carry rabies to boot.

I almost hit a bear while driving on Waterfall Road in Prince William a few years back. There are a couple of bears that live in that area; they've been known to wander around school yards in Haymarket causing lockdowns.

I've seen Black Bears in Clifton and have foxes running around my neighborhood in Fairfax. A pretty big red fox strolled right past me while I was in my backyard, as if he was just out for a sunday walkabout.

Foxes are pretty bold, so are skunk. They have no problem getting close to houses.

Prince William National Forest has a "healthy" black bear population according to park officials, but I've never seen one there. Quantico MCB is also supposed to have a lot of black bears. Last year a black bear tried to get into a grocery store in Stafford. So they're here. I've seen several foxes on my street (in Manassas) over the years. One has been lurking about the last several months. And if you're interested in wildlife, the coyote population has been growing in leaps and bounds in northern Virginia the last few years. I've heard the presence of coyotes reduces the fox population.

I must have come near a fox with kits last night. I heard about three or four different canines barking. As I was walking away on the path, one of the them was apparently walking in the woods parallel to me and continued barking at me.

Black bears can probably be found around Great Falls, possibly on the Mason Neck and in the SW areas of the county. They are all over the place in the outer suburbs.

Go to Great Meadows atop Skyline Drive right around dusk, park and walk around to where the woods meet the meadows. I can guarantee you'll see bears. I've been up there a half dozen times and seen loads of them every time. Haven't been in winter time mind you. Spring-Summer are the times I've seen them. Haven't seen any in this area. I remember a while back there was a bear cub at the Dulles Marriot lake area.

Plenty of wildlife at GMU . . .

I once saw a wild turkey running across the softball field closest to University Drive. I saw a piebald deer (in a small herd) near the West Lot Circle.

There is a fox den near the entrance to the intramural fields.
