Seen many fireflies this summer
Posted by: walleyed pip ()

And suddenly the summer is nearly over and i've hardly seen any fireflies. certainly not in the numbers i use to see in my yute here in fairfax county

i'm in fairfax area in house near some woods. a seemingly ideal location to see them fireflies out and about in the evenings but nary a sighting

and don't get me started on yellow jackets, not one sighting this summer and only a few wasps

the end is near i tell you, next to go will be my canary

but on the other hand the crows seemed to have rebounded quite nicely from the west nile virus. why'd i'd even say the area is a bit overpopulated with crows and ravens

but still where have all the fireflies gone?

I agree that the lightning bugs have dwindled over the years, but I think that they are usually out earlier in the season, around mid to late June. That's one of the things that ticks me off about school getting out so late. The lightning bugs are gone, and three days later the sun starts setting earlier... Grrrrrrr

Wow, I think they all congregated in Reston this year. We've had way more than normal in our yard all summer long. They started in mid-June and were going strong all of July. As of last week, we still had a few blinking but haven't noticed any this week.

A few nights ago I saw a flock of easily over 1000 crows emerge from the woods behind my house... like a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Not many here. Lady bugs gone too. I think they lay their eggs in the oak trees that are now affected by Oak Wilt( A fungus ) and are dying.

Lots of fireflies - they're more prevalent earlier in the summer.

I'm sure this thread will be an inspiration for him to write a song about fat fireflies who like sweet tea but who hate hipsters.

I've seen afew, but not many. I can't catch them too, like I could when I was a yute. I have two theories;

I think after generations of kids catching them, their population has diminished. The fireflies that were too quick to be caught, have gone on the make quick little firefly babies. And so on and so on. You could say that they adapted to their environment, and the ones more fit to survive, have thrived.

Or, God hates fireflys and sent them to hell to be fisted by the devil...

I saw "a lot" of fireflies early in the summer.

I think the populations are way down from, say, 1968.

The culprit is light pollution (cars, houses, streetlamps, urban), not children capturing them. The flashing is how they communicate for mating. Artificial lights disrupt this, and they die before reproducing.

I saw tons of Fireflies in June and July (Which is when they're out). They were everywhere, including flying inside my house. Entire trees nearby were lit up with lightning bugs.

It seemed the last few years the numbers were picking up to the point where there were a large number in our yard. This year, not so many.

1968 We could capture a barzillion fireflies and put them in jars w/ holes for air and have light. I think it is the same thing that is killing the Oak trees is killing the fireflies......Oak Wilt
Spacy... is that you Stacy ?? We had some fun with them fireflies!!

We had a ton of fireflies in June and July. Now we have a lot of yellow jackets, hornets, and wasps.

When the county sprayed for mosquitos a few years back (when they were trying to fend off that West Nile Virus), they also killed off many fireflies, but they rebounded years later, just like the mosquitos. This last year they have rebounded in our back yard, in June, when they were out in force.

I think when the county sprayed for the gypsy moths it also did some peripheral damage to other species like the lightning bugs and lady bugs.

I guess the spraying for the West Nile worked, because Fairfax County hasn't reported a human case of West Nile as of yet. Of course, if you did get bitten by a mosquito that was carrying the virus, you would have a 1 in 10 chance of actually coming down with West Nile and in those chances, another 1 in 50 that would develop serious medical complications.

Way to go, Fairfax. Another great example of your government at work.

The fireflies are still here. I thought the same thing one summer, but every year including this one, has seemed normal ever since.
