How to become a Handyman in NOVA
Posted by: Spock ()
Date: May 23, 2010 10:32PM

Hey people,
I'm looking at leaving my office job behind and pick up a hammer and tools and start building homes, repairing homes and whatnot. The thing is, I'm 29 and the only work I've been doing lately is boring TPS-like duties. How can I break into this new industry, legitimately (as in not at the 7-11 with my other essays?)

Thanks,
live long and prosper

Do you have experience on NX-class starships? How often do you perform deck-wiring repair? Have you dealt with Photonic torpedo adjustment?

You need to get a business license and then any other licenses or certification from the county. You may also need to do an apprentice with some contractor first.

The other factor you should be aware of is that there are tons of handyman in Northern VA.

Well I'm not looking to start my own business just yet. Maybe get my foot in the door with some company, and go from there. Suggestions?

Don't Home Depot and Lowe's hire contracters to install stuff?
Take course through County Adult education to bone up for certification and ask the instructors for idears about jobs

I still hate HD but their gotdamn stock is doing better than Lowe's and HD seems to be on a safer growth pattern than Lowe's these days still eff you HD

Anyone have any thoughts on CASE construction of Falls Church?

you need to be registered with the state to be a contractor - contact DPOR: http://www.dpor.virginia.gov

you only need a business license in ffxco if you make more than 10k/year

good luck with that. Carpentry, unless you've been part of a prosperous business for years, is being choked out due to you guessed it, the economy.

You have all those unemployed construction workers doing handyman-type work already. The OP needs to re-think this whole thing.

I think the guy is looking to become more seasoned at home repairs. Something the economy has played a part in as well as forcing contracting companies to hit the fan too.

Ideas for places to get hands on training I guess?

Now I know people on this forum hate Home Depot, BUT....

Doesn't Home Depot, or Lowe's for that matter, train their employees on crap like that?

Stand in front of 7-Eleven or Home Depot like the rest of the wetbacks. You will stick out like a sore thumb if you are white.
