Both buildings can still be seen how they were built with the same quality materials , the original plans and bills of materials are intact to be examined. For someone who claims not to have known Woodson you do seem to be very invested in protecting his legacy.

My observations of what Luther Jackson in the late sixties compared to schools such as McLean High, as well as the old Fairfax High and the old Falls Church High then Whittier Jr. High are accurate, much as you want to dismiss them as otherwise. Your better argument would have been to say that conditions of the schools in the late sixties isn't the same as conditions in the 1950s. It would be helpful to review the plans of both McLean and Luther Jackson from those days.

It would also be helpful to review the study on what to do with Luther Jackson when it closed. The report in those days was they thought about using it as an integrated high school but concluded the building could not be adequately upgraded. That is a damning thing to say about a school building that at the time was less than ten years old, especially when McLean remains in service today.

W.T. Woodson was a segregationist. He wasn't an obnoxious one like Harry Byrd, but he did actively oppose the integration of Fairfax County schools on more than legal grounds. If you won't accept my conclusion then how about Woodson's own words.

From a July, 1959 letter, five years after Brown:

"The order to desegregate schools is highly improper and infringes on human rights. To force integration of schools is to force social mixing, since attendance in public schools is usually compulsory. Next to the home the public school brings people into closest social relationship. Association in hotels, restaurants, buses, trains, airplanes, and churches is less serious since relationship among people in these situations is not so close or intimate and people have a choice with whom they wish to associate, it not being required by law, as pupils in a classrooms and in school activities."

"To force desegregation in schools is most unfair. It takes advantage of the immaturity of children in that it tends to use it to force upon both parents and children social adjustments to which so many parents strongly object. What part should parents play in choosing their children’s associates?"

Compare this with the sentiments expressed by School Board member Robert Davis around the same time. Davis did say that given the mandates of Virginia law Fairfax should require a court order before integrating. He went on to say:

"I am writing this letter to you and enclosing copies which you may, if you choose, furnish to the other members of the School Board and to Mr. Woodson and to the attorneys representing the School Board in the desegregation litigation."

"I was concerned at our meeting Tuesday evening by the fact that at least some persons present considered that it could be ethical and proper for the School Board or its attorneys to accept the 1954 decision of the Supreme Court of the United States as the law of the land, but still do everything in their power to impede or delay or prevent the implementation of that law."

"The result of proceeding in the manner I have set forth above would undoubtedly result in a delay of a final order to desegregate the schools in Fairfax County. This, to my mind, should not be allowed to influence our decision one way or the other. If we believe that the approach should be as I have stated above, it should be made. If not, no attempt should be made to avoid or delay application of the ruling of the Supreme Court at all."

"If and when, either by legal decision or by the operation of state law, the authority comes into the hands of the School Board to desegregate the schools of Fairfax County, then, if the School Board decides to accept what is laid down as law in the 1954 decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, without contesting the propriety of that decision, it is the duty of the School Board to attempt to formulate an entirely honest plan for giving effect to that 1954 decision in all honesty, and without any attempt to hedge or delay in any way. We, as members of the School Board, and as good citizens, cannot countenance a dodge or evasion or undue and unreasonable postponement of the implementation of the decision when the time comes. Furthermore, the lawyers who represent the School Board, and we on the School Board who are lawyers cannot, if we are to be properly ethical, countenance delaying or evasive tactics."

Then remember that during this same time period there were good people in Arlington County who were choosing to follow the Supreme Court's directions and paid a price for it.

August 21, 1959: School Board Integration Plan Arouses Controversy. "Meanwhile the school board is mailing out tuition grant applications to persons who do not desire to send their children to integrated schools. More than 100 requests have been received by the board. Under the tuition grant law, the state pays $250 toward the tuition of any child in any public or private school, provided that the latter is nonsectarian."

September 1, 1954, Page B-9: 29,000 Pupils Return To Fairfax Classes "There will be no change in the policy in Fairfax County of segregating Negro and white children until the Supreme Court hands down its final decree on the matter and the State Department of Education formulates a plan of procedure. For the first time, Negro high school children will be taught in the county at the new Luther Jackson High School in Merrifield, which opened today. Heretofore, Fairfax had joined other nearby jurisdictions in supporting a regional high school for Negroes at Manassas. – Fort Belvoir School Dropped – Also for the first time, operation of the Fort Belvoir Elementary School has been abandoned by Fairfax County because of the Federal Government’s policy of integrating Negro and white children in classes held on military reservations. – Cites Snow Shutdowns – Fairfax schools opened ahead of the rest of the area so that classes would not run too late into June next year."

Then there is this on the cost to white students in the county of maintaining segregation even after Woodson left and some schools were starting to integrate:

They point to Annandale High School with an enrollment of 1,936 in a building constructed for 1,525; to Falls Church High School, two students under its 1,400 capacity, J.E.B. Stuart High School, 1,864 students enrolled, capacity 1,400; W. T. Woodson High School, 2,818 crowded inside its walls designed to hold 2,400."

I have read the thread ,with all the new comments and trolls .I never knew who Woodson was in high school I also did not know who Jeb Stuart was or Marshall of the school at Tysons was . Woodson was a school in the middle of Fairfax where well off family’s lived . I learned years later from local newspaper articles Woodson was the school supt for years and many times I read he built all the schools the same. Every article said good things about him . The words in his letter here do show he was a segregationist. I have never seen or heard of any of his letters so I never saw any proof just claims lately, if it is true what is said here about any letters of his . I am old enough to remember how the Luther Jackson school got the out of date textbooks after the white kids were issued the brand new ones and I remember how the white schools were getting air conditioning installed but not the black schools. Another thing was that Luther Jackson had no drivers ed classes because colored kids were discouraged from driving. There were many efforts in place to keep the black kids down and WT Woodson approved of it. Having said that it was a much different time back then and keeping colored people down was the norm.

The black schools would get get the broken crayons after the white kids had used them for a year and the new teachers fresh out of college would have to teach black kids for a few years before moving on to a white school. The black schools had really cheap and shitty lunches too. That's just the way things were back then and yes WT was fine with it but so was everyone else at the time.

Black kids had no shoes and walked to school in snow with their feet tied in rags to eat salt pork and hominy at lunch with only warm water to drink while white kids got new shoes of their choice twice a year heated bus rides ,hot baked turkey mashed potatoes and gravy stuffing cranberry sauce vegetables hot rolls with butter and cake for lunch plus free ice cream every day . That's just the way things were back then and yes WT was fine with it but so was everyone else at the time who was a Democrat

Why instead of forcing a political issue that many don't agree with . Democrats in power should simply adopt a policy that all school names will be changed in Fairfax every 25 years to reflect current hero's , or just name the schools after geographic areas of Fairfax County in the same manner that almost all elementary schools are named and be done with it for good .WT Woodson was not an evil racist man he did lots of good for all in Fairfax County white and black equally in his day. What a load of shit. The history of liberalism is the history of struggle, of fighting against strong, entrenched interests quite often at a very high cost. Many of the ideas that conservatives cling to today came about by the struggles of liberals in the past.

There is within today's liberalism a branch that believes that struggle should no longer be necessary. Despite all the talk about rugged individualism the scourge of me-ism affects many conservatives as well. A belief society should be governed by rules which makes having to fight for them to be accepted, to go as far as their talents will carry you, and to not have to worry about those following behind them taking what they acquired. You don't like the rules that you are being forced to live and compete under, join the club. It is not possible in a society consisting of more than one person to order society in a way that each person will feel they are subjectively treated fairly.

If FCPS was building a new high school today, even with a full unbiased view of history, they would not be naming it Woodson. They would not be naming it Lee. They would not be naming it as Stuart. It isn't just that our view of them has changed. It is also that their role in shaping the society we live in has been diminished. We as a society tear down buildings that no longer suit our needs. We tear up woods and farmlands when we have a better use for them. Yet for some reason changing the name of a school erected fifty years ago is taboo. Sure there are better uses for the resources.
