Victim Identified; Police Search for Truck

Sully Police District – Police identified the victim of the May 17 Compton Road homicide as Jose Ramiro Rosales Cardona, 39 of 119 Courtney Drive in Manassas. He worked as a handyman for the Centreville family. Cardona was married with two children.

Police continue to investigate the incident and are following up leads. They are exploring all facets of the case to determine whether or not this was a targeted crime.

Detectives would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen an older model, white, Toyota pick up truck in the vicinity of Bay Valley Lane between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday, May 17. A witness told police he saw someone jump into the bed of a pick up truck and pull a tarp over himself between 10:50 and 10:55 a.m. The truck then fled eastbound on Compton Road towards Union Mill Road.

Anyone willing to venture a guess as to the immigration status of any of those involved in this little escapade?

But illegal immigration is a victimless crime unless you happen to be the victim or have to pay for the manhunt, trial and incarceration of the perp(s).

It is time for SB 1070 in Virginia. And until then, remember that Virginia is an "open carry" state and I'm not talking about adult beverages.

No way was this a random crime. I saw a news story on this and the house where the attack took place is *fucking* *enormous*. Nobody randomly raids a house like that. You're guaranteed to have a security system, security cameras, a gate at the driveway, and it's highly unlikely that the house would ever be totally empty so the police are certain to be notified quickly. Plus, with that kind of money, the police are likely to get there really quickly.

100% guarantee that there is far more to this story than a random "hey guyz, l3ts rob a mansion and kill someone!1!!!!eleven!1!!!"

While the police were quick to get up the helo and dogs when they realized they had 2 dudes with a gun tooling around the county, they did not arrive quickly at the house, becuase somebody is dead.

Apparently the dead lawn care worker was sending his paychecks to family in guatemala.

Ah well, another home invasion that could have been prevented by the lawful ownership of firearms

They actually had crime sprees in Boca Raton, FL similar to this, and yes, people did in fact randomly raid mansions down there.

You're right though, in this case it doesn't sound random.

I'm not sure what you mean by "that type of person". The type of person he is being portrayed as in the media is a pretty good guy. Here's what I mean:

--------
Then, the stocky Rosales decided to fight back. He jumped one of the invaders and wrested his gun away, sources familiar with the case said Tuesday. But the other man turned his gun on the family's mother. He threatened to kill the matriarch if Rosales didn't give the gun back. Rosales did, the sources said.

And then the gunmen shot and killed Rosales.
(Washington Post)
---------

Jose Rosales gave his life to protect two people. That's a pretty good type of person to be.

---------------------------------
Who knows from whence he came, and who knows where he goes, dot dot dot.

I could almost guess this dude got a sort loan on his car tittle. The Indian dude cashed out his vehicle. They didn't have any money and the N got piss. They figure they do the old western thing. Go to his house and kick his ass. They probably went to this house and started yelling, Go back to your country etc.
Then Rosales came to the rescue. Rosales was a nice fellow.
I know at least 4 central Americans that would just snap your head off, suck your eye balls and eat your eyes right in front of you and your kids.

Yup. However, I heard on the news this afternoon, they haven't charged the guy they picked up with murder, yet. They're only holding him on some other charges. I'm not sure if he was the trigger guy - or, if it was one of the other two that they're looking for. I'm sure after a week or so in lock-up, the guy they have now will start chirping like a bird and rat out the other two. I'm sure all 3 will be locked up by the end of this coming weekend (after Thanksgiving) - hopefully.

You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge

Verse One: Ice Cube

Straight outta Compton crazy motherfucker named Ice Cube
From the gang called Niggaz With Attitudes
When I'm called off I got a sawed off
Squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off
You too boy if ya fuck with me
The police are gonna hafta come and get me
Off yo ass that's how I'm goin out
For the punk motherfuckers that's showin out
Niggaz start to mumble, they wanna rumble
Mix em and cook em in a pot like gumbo
Goin off on a motherfucker like that
with a gat that's pointed at yo ass
So give it up smooth
Ain't no tellin when I'm down for a jack move
Here's a murder rap to keep yo dancin
with a crime record like Charles Manson
AK-47 is the tool
Don't make me act the motherfuckin fool
Me you can go toe to toe, no maybe
I'm knockin niggaz out tha box, daily
yo weekly, monthly and yearly
until them dumb motherfuckers see clearly
that I'm down with the capital C-P-T
Boy you can't fuck with me
So when I'm in your neighborhood, you better duck
Coz Ice Cube is crazy as fuck
As I leave, believe I'm stompin
but when I come back, boy, I'm comin straight outta Compton

Chorus:

[City of Compton, City of Compton]

[Eazy E] Yo Ren
[MC Ren] Whassup?
[Eazy E] Tell em where you from!

Verse Two: MC Ren

Straight outta Compton, another crazy ass nigga
More punks I smoke, yo, my rep gets bigger
I'm a bad motherfucker and you know this
But the pussy ass niggaz don't show this
But I don't give a fuck, I'ma make my snaps
If not from the records, from jackin the crops
Just like burglary, the definition is 'jackin'
And when illegally armed it's called 'packin'
Shoot a motherfucker in a minute
I find a good piece o' pussy, I go up in it
So if you're at a show in the front row
I'm a call you a bitch or dirty-ass ho
You'll probably get mad like a bitch is supposed to
But that shows me, slut, you're composed to
a crazy muthafucker from tha street
Attitude legit cause I'm tearin up shit
MC Ren controls the automatic
For any dumb muthafucker that starts static
Not the right hand cause I'm the hand itself
every time I pull a AK off the shelf
The security is maximum and that's a law
R-E-N spells Ren but I'm raw
See, coz I'm the motherfuckin villain
The definition is clear, you're the witness of a killin
that's takin place without a clue
And once you're on the scope, your ass is through
Look, you might take it as a trip
but a nigga like Ren is on a gangsta tip
Straight outta Compton...

Chorus:

[City of Compton, City of Compton]

[Dr. Dre] Eazy is his name and the boy is comin...

Verse Three: Eazy-E

...straight outta Compton
is a brotha that'll smother yo' mother
and make ya sister think I love her
Dangerous motherfucker raises hell
And if I ever get caught I make bail
See, I don't give a fuck, that's the problem
I see a motherfuckin cop I don't dodge him
But I'm smart, lay low, creep a while
And when I see a punk pass, I smile
To me it's kinda funny, the attitude showin a nigga drivin
but don't know where the fuck he's going, just rollin
lookin for the one they call Eazy
But here's a flash, they never seize me
Ruthless! Never seen like a shadow in the dark
except when I unload, see I'll get over the hesitation
and hear the scream of the one who got the last penetration
Give a little gust of wind and I'm jettin
But leave a memory no one'll be forgettin
So what about the bitch who got shot? Fuck her!
You think I give a damn about a bitch? I ain't a sucker!
This is the autobiography of the E, and if you ever fuck with me
You'll get taken by a stupid dope brotha who will smother
word to the motherfucker, straight outta Compton

Chorus:

Man Pleads Guilty to Home Invasion Murder
Reynard Prather, of Oxon Hill, Md., pleaded guilty this week to his role in a 2010 Centreville murder.
By Mary C. Stachyra
February 23, 2012
http://centreville.patch.com/articles/guilty-plea-in-centreville-home-invasion-murder

A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to the murder of Jose Rosales Cardona during a home invasion in Centreville in 2010.

On Wednesday, Reynard Lazaro Prather, of Oxon Hill, pleaded guilty in federal court on the charge of murder resulting from the use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Hobbs Act, which prohibits robbery that affects interstate commerce.

In a statement of fact filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Prather said that he was not the one who fired the shot that killed Cardona, but admitted to being involved in the incident.

Prather said in the court document that he drove with a male accomplice from Prince George's County, Md., to Virginia on May 17, 2010. During the drive, the male accomplice—named only as "John Doe #1" in court documents—handed Prather a duffel bag with semiautomatic, loaded pistol inside. In Centreville, the two met up with another unnamed man, who drove Prather and his accomplice to a home on Compton Road in Centreville.

Their intent was to rob the family who lived on Compton Road; the father owned several check-cashing stores in Northern Virginia. Prather's share was supposed to be $50,000, he said in the court document.

When they saw the owner of the home leave and leave the garage door open, Prather and "John Doe #1" went inside, planning to rob the man when he returned. It was then that Jose Cardona, who worked as a handyman at the house, and the owner's son discovered them hiding inside. Cardona tried to defend the home, and fought with "John Doe #1." Prather then fought with the owner's son, heard a shot and saw Cardona lying dead on the driveway, he said.

Cardona, 39, a resident of Manassas Park, was a native of Guatemala. He had worked for the Centreville family for a year and a half, who in media reports described him as loyal and dedicated. He had planned to return to Guatemala to help take care of his mother, who was sick.

In November, a grand jury indicted Prather on four counts for his role in the crime. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped two lesser charges against Prather: using a firearm in a crime of violence and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.

Prather faces life in prison and further financial penalties. He also agreed to pay restitution for the full amount of the victims' losses, according to court documents. Sentencing is scheduled for June 1, 2012.

Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Centreville Home Invasion Murder
Reynard Prather, 22, was sentenced in federal court Friday.
By Mary C. Stachyra
June 1, 2012
http://centreville.patch.com/articles/reynard-prather-sentenced-to-30-years-for-centreville-home-invasion-murder

A Maryland man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a 2010 Centreville home invasion that led to the murder of Jose Rosales Cardona, a Manassas Park resident.

Reynard Prather, 22, of Oxen Hill, MD, pleaded guilty in February to charges of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence and use of a firearm in a crime of violence causing death. Cardona, a handyman at the Centreville residence, died while trying to defend his employers from the armed intruders.

"I think that this was a very tragic thing that happened, and it goes to the heart of every person's worst nightmare, being the target of a home invasion," U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said outside the courthouse, after the sentencing.

U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Trenga said Prather had accepted responsibility for the crime. But he added that while Prather did not pull the trigger on the gun, his participation led to the death of Cardona.

"His death was a predictable outcome," Trenga said.

Several of Prather's family members were present at the courtroom Friday, quietly weeping. In a letter written to the court before sentencing, Prather said that he was sorry he had taken part in the crime.

"I am well aware of my actions, what I am facing, and the need for consequences," he wrote.

Prather's sentencing comes just a week after another man, Tasheik Ashanti Champean, was indicted on weapons charges related to the same incident. The case has been long and difficult. In court documents, prosecutors alleged that there were at least three people involved in the incident. When asked if there might be more charges forthcoming, MacBride said, "The investigation continues."

Man Indicted for Role in Home Invasion Death
A federal grand jury has indicted Tasheik Ashanti Champean on weapons charges.
By Mary C. Stachyra
June 1, 2012
http://centreville.patch.com/articles/tasheik-ashanti-champean-indicted-for-role-in-home-invasion-death

A federal grand jury has indicted a man on weapons charges for his alleged role in the 2010 death of a Manassas Park man during a home invasion at a Centreville mansion.

The grand jury charged Tasheik Ashanti Champean with conspiracy to violate the Hobbs Act, using a firearm in a crime of violence and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. The jury further alleged that the motivation was to rob the owners of the mansion, who Champean believed kept money on hand from their check-cashing business. During the scuffle, Jose Rosales Cardona was killed.

Cardona, married and a father of two children, had moved to Manassas Park from Guatemala. He obtained steady work as a handyman and gardener at a home off of Compton Road in Centreville. Two years ago, on May 17, 2010, he died trying to defend the family from armed gunmen who broke into their home.

The indictment alleges that Champean—also known as Douglas A. Howell—met up with Reynard Lazaro Prather and one other man, "John Doe #1," in Prince George's County, Md. Champean allegedly gave Prather a duffel bag with a loaded semi-automatic pistol, in addition to a taser and flex cuffs they then carried to the mansion.

The indictment, first reported by The Washington Examiner, came shortly before Prather is to be sentenced on weapons charges for his role in the conspiracy. Sentencing guidelines call for anywhere from 360 days to life in prison.

Trial Date Set For Man Accused of Home Invasion

A man accused of orchestrating a home invasion that ended in the murder of a heroic handyman will stand trial in federal court this December.

On Aug. 9, District Judge Anthony Trenga ordered that the trial for Tasheik Ashanti Champean, of Maryland, begin on Dec. 10. Champean is charged with conspiracy to violate the Hobbs Act, two counts of use of a firearm during a violent crime and three counts of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

Trenga further ordered that any motions in the case be filed by Oct. 12, and any hearing on the motions be held on Nov. 9.

On Aug. 3, the Attorney General directed prosecutors not to seek the death penalty against Champean, according to a document filed by federal prosecutors in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

A grand jury indicted Champean in June, alleging that he met up with Reynard Lazaro Prather and one other man, "John Doe #1," in Prince George's County, Md. Champean allegedly gave Prather a duffel bag with a loaded semi-automatic pistol, in addition to a taser and flex cuffs. They then carried the weapons to a Centreville mansion on Compton Rd., the grand jury charged in the indictment.

During the invasion, Jose Rosales Cardona, a Manassas Park resident and the handyman at the house, was shot and killed while trying to defend the Centreville family. The case yielded few leads for over a year, and in 2011 Fairfax County detectives sent out an appeal to the public for more information on the case.

Prather pleaded guilty to weapons charges early this year, and in June, a federal judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

Former Metro Bus Driver Sentenced in Centreville Home Invasion Death
The case remained under seal until this week.

A former Metro bus driver faces over 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to orchestrating a Centreville home invasion that led to the death of a local handyman.

Stacy Lorenzo Reed, of Manassas, was sentenced in federal court Friday to 270 months in prison, with credit for time served, followed by three years of supervised release.

Reed pleaded guilty to robbery and aiding and abetting the discharge of a firearm during or in relation to a crime of violence in April, but the case was sealed at that time. It remained under seal until this week (some documents are still not publicly available).

Two other charges against Reed were dropped as part of his plea agreement. Reed also agreed to provide investigators with additional information about the case, which remained unsolved for over a year before there were any arrests.

“Nothing can bring back the life that was taken during this horrific crime, but today’s sentence sends a clear message that there are severe consequences for all those who conspire to commit crimes,” U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride said. “Mr. Reed, while not physically present at the murder, put this tragic and terrifying sequence of events in motion. He will now have over 20 years in federal prison to contemplate his greed fueled involvement in the crime.”

Reed admitted orchestrating the May 17, 2010, robbery near Compton Road, in which the family's handyman, Jose Rosales Cardona, a Guatemalan immigrant who lived in Manassas Park, lost his life. Two others, Tasheik Ashanti Champean and Reynard Prather, have already been sentenced for their roles in the home invasion.

In court documents, Reed admitted having "inside information" on the family, who owned a check cashing business and apparently kept a sizeable amount of money in their home. On the day of the invasion, he met Champean and Prather in a shopping center in Virginia, where they met an unidentified man.

Reed drove the two men to the home in Champean's vehicle, followed by the unidentified man in a pickup truck, according to court documents. After they arrived, Reed dropped off Champean and Prather, then left in Champean's vehicle. The other man stayed behind on a nearby side road as the getaway driver.

Champean and Prather, both armed with semiautomatic pistols, walked through the woods to the residence, where they saw the victim depart. One of the garage doors was left open, so the two entered and waited for the victim to return. A family member and Cardona discovered the two, however, and a struggle broke out.

"In the midst of the struggle, a shot was fired, and Cardona fell dead to the driveway in front of the garage, a single bullet having passed through his left hand, entering into his brain through his left eye," a document signed by Reed states.

Reed, Champean, Prather and the unidentified man met up at a shopping center in Fairfax.

"Although Reed did not know that Champean or Prather were armed, he acknowledges that it was reasonably foreseeable that one or both of them might be armed to further the goals or objectives of the conspiracy," the document signed by Reed states.
