Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Schools will close fast due to a phenomena known as Bureaucratic Panic, which, in its basic form means that when you don't understand a situation you must take the most extreme measure.
Example: Forest Hills Elementary school in Oregon, where a man determined to have the Corona virus worked, is closed until Wednesday, marking two weeks since he was last at the school.
This action sets the stage for a two-week school closure based on a single individual who tests positive.
There is no hand-sanitizer in the schools other than what teachers buy for their own classrooms and perhaps one in the main office. Too late to get any now as the shelves are bare.
FCPS will not have an outbreak. Many kids were bathed as youngsters in the Ganjes and developed immunity to everything. Lil gook kids are around some of the most disgusting things imaginable when they have to slaughter animals evenings and weekends at their parents many businesses. These kids eat corona for breakfast while surfing their phones and laugh at the weak old white people tipping over.

Actually, each classroom has many bottles of the stuff. Hand sanitizer, along with different paper products are part of the donation drives that schools have. “Paper towels, boxes of Kleenex, etc.”

Long term sub in FCPS here. Most schools, particularly elementary schools, have placed sanitizer out of reach of children - its alcohol and several kids have tried ingesting or licking the sanitizer. This involved calls home, a clinic visit and or call to poison control and EMS. Also removed to encourage soap and water handwashing.
We had a number of kids steal the hand sanitizer and sell them in their home neighborhood or on the bus. We have removed everything that is not bolted down or has no resale value in our school.

RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY, VA — Wakefield Country Day School in Rappahannock County is shutting down until Monday over coronavirus concerns after two-dozen students, teachers and friends traveled recently to Northern Italy, ground zero for the coronavirus in Europe. The school trip to Italy ended Feb. 25, InsideNoVa reported Thursday.
Rumor has it the school board is proposing a name change as they consider Corona-virus to be a racist slur against the Mexican brewed beer.
New name suggestions are being accepted, with Justice-Virus and Ginsburg-Virus being the favorites so far. All names must be considered in the spirit of One Fairfax.
The School Without Walls High School in Northwest D.C. and The District of Columbia International School will be closed Monday.
The School Without Walls High School closed after a staff member came in contact with a patient who ended up testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).
Let’s look at the facts and put this current coronavirus strain, COVID 19, in perspective.
According to the CDC, there have been 647 cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of March 10, 2020, with 25 deaths.
Compare that to upwards of 45,000,000 cases of the flu in the U.S. already this flu season, leading to 46,000 deaths.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that last year in the U.S. alone 35,000,000 people contracted the flu. That is million with an “M.” That means that one in every 10 Americans had the flu.
There were 490,000 hospitalizations and 34,000 people who died of the flu in America during last year’s flu season.
Fairfax Co. Public Schools will be closed Monday to give staff time to prepare for the possibility of distance learning in the event schools are closed due to coronavirus concerns.
Planning Scenario 1: Under this scenario, a large percentage of our schools are in session but a single school or a small group of schools may have dismissed students from classes to limit/restrict social contact and slow the transmission of influenza virus. The Superintendent may authorize the dismissal of students from class based on recommendations from the local health department director. Instructional program support and division-wide support services may be limited due to high absenteeism or the redeployment of staff.
Planning Scenario 2: Schools are closed. Under this scenario, students have been dismissed from school either by order of the state health commissioner to limit/restrict social contact and slow the transmission of influenza virus or by order of the Division Superintendent or the School Board due to falling class attendance and/or rising staff absenteeism. There are “snow days” built into the FCPS school year calendar that could be utilized if schools need to be closed for any length of time, but FCPS facilities may remain open to faculty and staff to support continuity of learning.
Loudoun County Public Schools are closed Thursday, March 12 through Friday, March 20. All activities are canceled. Schools will reopen March 23.
The school system canceled all in-state and out-of-state overnight field trips scheduled through April 30, and any trips to New York state, including day trips. All other day trips will continue as scheduled, though LCPS said participation in field trips is optional.
George Mason is extending spring break by an additional week through March 20. When spring break ends, most classes will be conducted through “virtual alternative instruction, from Monday, March 23 through Friday April 3.
The school is encouraging students to stay home, but residence halls are open for students who cannot go home.
George Mason University suspended all university-authorized travel for students, faculty and staff effective March 16 through “at least” April 10, the school said in an announcement.
NoVa Community College is moving classes online. Classes will be canceled Monday and Tuesday to allow for the transition. All classroom instruction will be conducted virtually from Wednesday, March 18, until April 4.
University of Virginia classes are being moved online starting Thursday, March 19. Students away on spring break are encouraged to return home or remain home.
“We will not be holding classes on grounds for the foreseeable future, quite possibly through the end of the semester. We will reassess after April 5 at the earliest and periodically after that date,” university President James Ryan said in an update.
At William & Mary, effective immediately, all in-person classes have been suspended. University President Katherine Rowe told the campus community in a letter that online lectures will begin Monday, March 23.
American University in D.C. is mandating online classes for the rest of the spring semester.
“There will be no on-campus instruction for the remainder of this semester, and courses will be completed remotely,” the university said in a statement Thursday.
Students are required to leave on-campus housing by Monday, March 23.
During the past several hours we continue to hear genuine concerns from parents about keeping our schools open while the coronavirus response escalates around the country. Schools are closing in Maryland, and several other states, and a state of emergency was declared in Virginia. As a result, and in an abundance of caution, I believe it is prudent for FCPS to cancel school tomorrow to help ease parent, staff, and student anxiety.
Therefore, all FCPS schools will be closed Friday, March 13, 2020.
School offices and central offices will open on time with an unscheduled leave policy in effect for 12-month employees. (Condition 2).
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Scott Brabrand, Superintendent
Fairfax County Public Schools
"The first two weeks of school closure will not include any teacher-directed instruction. Instead, a variety of instructional resources will be posted on 24/7 by central offices in order to keep your child engaged in learning activities.
These activities are optional and meant to help students maintain known skills rather than develop new ones."
Third quarter will be considered done as is. 4th quarter will be via the net, teachers teaching their classes this way until this summer and then a decision about next year will be made.
