Effective immediately, the Fairfax County School Board has banned plastic straws from the serving lines at middle and high school cafeterias. Supposedly there were actually some misguided students who asked for this change.
However, because two board members recognized that this is nonsense that has no significant effect on the environment, students may still request straws, which is not expected to slow down the lines too much.
Straws will not be denied to free and reduced lunch students, those with special needs, or students in the lower grades. Straws will also be available to all teachers and administrators, and at all the administrative centers.

Stock up on your boxes of plastic straws at amazon.com. You can buy at least a few hundred under $10 there. Its what I have done. I then carry a few plastic straws with me wherever I go. Paper straws are yucky. Like the restaurant or eating place is going to inspect the trash after you leave and add to your tab or fine you.

FWIW, I taught in a school many, many years ago that banned straws in the cafeteria. Not because of the oceans, but because of student behavior with them....
