Accuweather radar https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/national/weather-radar-interactive shows the storm this hour around Knoxville, TN and entering southern Virginia.

How much snow, it depends on the storms intensity, how slowly or fast it travels and which direction the storm travels and whether the storm grows or not which these all determines how many hours of precipitation, and also the temperature when the precipitation falls - generally under 32 degrees, snow; 31 to 34, sleet or freezing rain; 33 to 34 and above, rain, but there are exceptions. This is one of these storms coming from the southwest and gradually traveling northeast, so expecting to get some moisture from it. They are predicting temperatures from 5am to midday/early afertnoon from 29 to 32 (snow), and rising slow after that into the evening (mix to rain). Weather forecasting is better than decades ago, but it yet far from perfect. Thursday morning expecting a slushy, snowy, icy mix on the roads and sidewalks.

School system does not want lawsuits from parents from kids falling on uncleared sidewalks and paths.

With a smartphone, load the Uber or Lyft apps and it will show how many cars are around and running (you do not have to request a ride). In most areas of Fairfax County, cars show up within 10 minutes and will show 5 to 6 cars on the screen within a couple of miles. The storm of a few to several inches we had in January, that Sunday morning not having to go anywhere and out of curiosity, the nearest car or two in both apps were more than 15-20 minutes away on Route 28 near Dulles Airport. If the weather is too bad for many Lyft and Uber drivers to be driving, then that is a sign that not many of these drivers want to risk injury or damage to their own cars or others in much snowy and icy conditions.
Also:
* website https://trafficview.org/traffic_cameras/ see to real time live video conditions where VDOT has cameras, interstates and some others roads like US50.
* http://www.vdotplows.org/ shows on a map streets and roads they are plowing or have plowed (this one not perfect from recent experience, but give you a general idea.
* See if the USPS mail truck shows up in your neighborhood or not, which if it does, that is a good sign. Remembered a storm three years back with 12 inches of snow and neighborhood hilly, it snowed Friday into Saturday, and did not see the mail truck while telecommuting from home until Wednesday four days later.
* Also if it is too bad, Fairfax Connector now has GPS on their buses and you can see if any buses running near you at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/bustime/eta/eta.jsp (of course, don't check it in the middle of the night in most areas of the county when no buses are running anyway). They also send out email and text alerts if systemwide service issues if you signed up for the alerts prior.

This bus in mid county runs 21-22 hours a day so except between say 2:15am and 4:30am, you can use it check if the GPS is on track with the schedule.

P.S. This bus serves has lot of ridership from lower income areas. In recent years, only rode it twice between Tysons and Dunn Loring during rush hour, and driver greeting passengers in Spanish.

Increased Number of Traffic Accidents on Area Roads; Stay Home if Possible

Posted at 10:50 a.m.

Public safety officials from Fairfax County, and the region, are reporting an increasing number of traffic accidents on area roadways.

County officials ask residents to please stay home and stay off the roads. Roads are worse than they look, so if you don’t have to be on the roads, don’t!

The National Weather Service reports that Fairfax County has received approximately 3-4 inches of snow so far this morning, with a transition to sleet later. Temperatures, meanwhile, will only rise into the low 30s today. The winter storm warning also remains in effect until 7 p.m. this evening.

Also Google Maps showing orange mostly (slower traffic), red, and black on nearly all county roads and highways.
https://www.google.com/maps/

Also check the Waze smartphone app for reports of accidents around in your area.
