Why don’t people wear their seatbelt?

Seems like a relatively minor crash. I once hit a barrier going no more than 10 mph. I was in a parking lot in the process of putting my seat belt on. It hurt like fuck. Imagine sprinting blind into a brick wall. While driving, it felt like I was at a snail’s pace but the force almost crumpled my whole body under the steering wheel. But people do this shit on interstates? She would have had nothing but bruises if she wore her seatbelt. It’s super sad. I’m sorry for her family.

This sucks. She is in my circle of friends and although I didn’t know Lesly personally, everyone seems to have loved her. I don’t understand either why people don’t wear their seatbelts. Machismo?

Because deep down some part of us would rather be dead than continue to live in Fairfax.

Because people in general think that they are not subject to laws, or tragic occurrences such as these. "that'll never happen to me. I'm special". Sadly, not all of us learn this lesson without dire consequences.

I haven't worn one for 57 years and nothing's ever happened...why start now?

Why was she stopped on 66 in the middle of the road at 3:45am?

She wasn’t. It clearly says she was traveling westbound when she was rear ended. Unless you’re trying to end your life, wear your seatbelts people.

No whammie, no whammie, stop!...

Continue to test your luck. In the 90’s I drove by an accident on the parkway. I saw a 13 year old kid wrapped in the guardrails, dead with his back broken and twisted in the opposite of how it should have been. The EMTs were with his also dead 17 year old brother in the ravine below the bridge. A girl was screaming and perfectly fine. She had her seatbelt on when she over corrected and hit the rail, they were unbuckled. She was fine (physically), they were and are still dead. I later knew the family through other means...completely devastated. It haunts me.

Do you buy lottery tickets? Logic says you won't win, and that it is a waste of money. Yet many people believe they will win. Others do it because they can afford to lose. That same logic applies with seat belts. With most accidents it makes no difference whether you wear a seatbelt or not. If making a seatbelt does make a difference the most likely result is that you are better off with a seatbelt. There are some accidents where not wearing the seatbelt is the better choice...and I was in one of them.

That’s probably true in some cases, but statistically, 90% of the time wearing a seatbelt is to your advantage.

Keep playing life that way. Roll the dice enough and you will lose. 99% of the time, it’s best to wear a seatbelt. Just because you’ve “won the lottery” and people do, only a retarded person would live that way with their life on the line. I play the lottery based on your logic, but only lose $5 at a time (which I can more than afford to lose). I won’t put my life on the line. Idiot

"Traveling" just means going one place to another. It doesn't mean the vehicle was in motion when it was struck.

I saw the impact results...looks like about a 30-40mph impact from the rear. If she was traveling at highway speed the vehicle behind her needed to be doing about 100mph to have that kind of impact. That's highly unlikely given where the vehicles ended up - both facing the same direction fairly close together.

More likely she was stopped or moving very slowly and the vehicle behind braked a bit before striking.

Was she stopping to send a very important tweet?

My friends husband is a firefighter and ran the call. He said the cops were saying that not only was she stopped, but she had her lights off.

Meh...fuck you. It's my car, my life and I'll do what I want. I've also never been ticketed for not wearing my seat belt. Maybe if the state starts taking it seriously, I will, too.

The only thing a seat belt is good for is preventing me from escaping a vehicle fire and also making sure the dry cleaners' livelihood is protected by fucking up my suits. Thanks...no thanks.
