It is 4 PM on Sunday. Parents need to plan for kids being home tomorrow (and possibly Tuesday and Wednesday).
For Dale to think, right now, that schools will open tomorrow he has to believe that in 48 hours they cleared every school parking lot, walkway, school bus, secondary street, bus stop waiting area, etc. The reality is that there will be no school in Fairfax County this week. This should be announced ASAP so that parents can plan appropriately.
Since when is Loudoun County that the enlightened forward-thinking school system?
Also, when is GMU going to acknowledge the fact that many students will not be able to get out of their neighborhoods tomorrow and get to their exams? Have you seen many of the neighborhoods in Fairfax where these students live. It could be another 48 hours before they are dug out.
The immaturity that some administrators display is astounding! Yes, this weather creates some major inconveniences and significant costs. That cannot be helped - it just is. In my community this snow storm will send our snow removal budget into a major deficit. We still remove the snow - it is just a reality.
It might seem cool to wake up to the surprise of school being cancelled but it is a royal pain in the ass to the staff, transportation planners, parents, and employers that make up our community. The more advanced notice you provide the better for all.

Here's a thought...plan for both scenarios. Have your kids do their homework, shower and go to bed early just like any other school night. Parents should make plans about what to do if schools are closed.
So simple, yet so complicated (for some).
Of course either decision will be the wrong one. If they close, then people will bitch about having to watch their kids even when "my roads are clear". If they open, people will bitch because "my roads aren't clear".
