Holmgren and Shanahan haven't been gone that long compared to what happened with Gibbs. Gibbs heyday was before the salary cap and when most teams didn't have regimented off-season conditioning programs. I also think Gibbs health played a role in Gibbs 2.0 not being so great.
My concern with Shanahan over Holmgren is that Shanahan never won a playoff game without Elway. For all his success with the running game, he couldn't do much with game-management QBs when it came to big games. The AFC West was also pretty sad for much of the 2000s, so many of those playoff appearances that did occur probably wouldn't have in a more competitive conference, like the NFC East.
Holmgren, on the other hand, took two pitiful teams and turned them into Super Bowl-caliber teams with QBs no one else wanted when he brought them in. I'm not a fan of Holmgren the GM, but Holmgren the GM is better than Danny Boy and Vinny the GM.
