Anyone know if Fairfax County will permit prepayment of 2018 real estate taxes? If so, what is the process?

Yes. Just put the cash in a paper bag and drop if off at my place. I'll see that it goes to the right place.

Just save it and make some money on it, they can have it later. I do wish I could just pay it all at the end of the year, guess too many plebes couldn't handle it that way so now its twice a year.

Yes, but must pay in person at County Government Center by 12/26. I talked to them yesterday. You can go in person Thursday Dec 21 8 - 6:30 or Tues Dec 26 8:00 - 4:30. Need to write "2018 prepayment" and the map number of your property on your check. Pay at cashiers office on 2nd floor.

I was advised on the phone that, although you can bring the check in, you also can mail it, so long as they receive it by Tuesday, Dec 26.

DC has information on a website about it. I don't see anything for Fairfax.

Unfortunately I am out of town through the end of they year. Anyone know if you can pre-pay your Fairfax County real estate tax online, even though there isn't an assessment/bill yet?

Regarding this:

Due to the new tax bill which Trump is expected to sign into law, many people are trying to pay their 2018 real estate tax bills in 2017 to save on Federal and VA taxes. For the 2018 tax year, you can deduct only up to $10,000 total in state taxes and real estate taxes (combined) from your Federal taxes, assuming you itemize. See this article for more:

All you pre-payers...unfortunately the IRS just squashed your idea. You are NOT allowed to deduct the pre-payments. Reason is since we haven't been assessed yet, (don't come out til late Feb), we can't claim it.

"A prepayment of anticipated real property taxes that have not been assessed prior to 2018 are not deductible in 2017."

See the IRS web site for the full note.

Looks like Fairfax County limo liberals aren't going to be able to dodge Trump's tax increase on rich folks. Haha. Funny, they vote to have a big giant government, but don't want to pay the taxes to support that big giant government.

What was funny and sad at the same time was that there were 2000 hopeful pre-payers in line at the Fairfax County Govt Center the day after Christmas, there in person to prepay just to get the deduction in 2017. Not only did they not know you could just do it online, but two days later the IRS said that they basically waster their time for nothing.

Yeah, I did wonder about that. These people seem to think they are wealthy and smart but have no access to a computer? I gather this was just lonely people looking for someone to bore.

As a tax attorney told me once, deduct it. If the IRS doesn't like it, make them ask you about it. Don't do their job for them. As for my defense, I don't know when the Fairfax county assessment happens because it's not clear. I only know the assessed period and when I am billed. The assessment isn't clearly laid out.

Am I missing something?

The deduction for state and property taxes will be capped at $10k. Cant deduct prop taxes if not yet billed.

However, I pay estimated VA taxes. Just pay 10k extra to VA this year instead of prepaying prop tax.Problem solved, but hurry!

It wasn't clear to me that you could pay it online--I looked, but with nothing owed, it wasn't letting me pay. They did have a 1-page PDF explaining how to prepay by mail or ACH at the bank, which I was considering until the IRS guidance came out.
