VA Safety Inspection Rejected for Nail in Tire, Will Plugging Pass?

The nail is in the tread not the sidewall. Will it pass once it's plugged or does the tire have to be replaced?

Properly repaired - The inspector will never know the repair happened.

You will pass no problems with a plug.

That nail must have made a really tight seal if you haven't had to put air in it or noticed it's going flat. When you start having to put air in a tire frequently, it is time to get somebody too look at it. You can do it yourself with a spray bottle full of water and a jack. Just be careful if you use a regular tire jack and under no circumstances should you crawl under the car while it is on the tire jack.

He put a mark on the sidewall and circled the nail.

If I go back to the same place for the $1 reinspection, he'll know where to look and see a plug. I just wanted to know if a plug is grounds for failure.

Plug the tire ,wipe of the marks , switch the tire to another location Front right etc.
It he asks what happened to the marks, tell him you had a used tire replaced .

There is a small amount of tread on the sidewall. If the nail has punctured the tire in that area the tire is done and needs to be replaced.

If the nail is only in the tread, then it can be repaired properly, and will pass inspection.

Always have passed..Yes in the sidewall, or in the edge of the tread they wont sometimes if the tread is thin and a plug in in one of the tread depth grooves it wont..

By rights a tire is supposed to be demounted the inside, buffed, a hot patch installed.

Or was that for Bias Wall tires..45 years ago..?? LOL

DAJAX Ya Pal..Erase that crayon mark on the tire too..

Why didn't you ask the inspector if the tire could be repaired so your car can pass inspection?

Or did the inspector tell you the tire has a nail in the sidewall, and the tire is beyond repair?

Are you looking for someone to co-sign your bullshit?

I dropped the car off at VA tire in Springfield and just dealt with the guy at the desk that handles the paperwork.

Who does sidewall repairs in Fairfax County?

I know it can be done, just some places won't do it.

Go to an auto parts store and buy the plug kit for $8 or so. Read directions and it only takes 10 min to plug it yourself. Also if you move the car so you can access the nail you don't even have to take the tire off.

national transportation safety administration

read the UPDATED ntsa guide on road safety / tire repairs

---------------------------

the issue is: tire construction is now THINNER. it's changed and infact thinner. plugging and patching is likely still allowed HOWEVER DON'T think doing is is by the same old tools and methods that "used to work". i'm sure last time i checked that PATCHING, which was superior to plugging, became nearly illegal without proper information (that no-one has) and new tools.

the issue is: if china follows safety standards (would we know? they continually lie and even put usa labels on imports illegally)

plugs are not always allowed, it depends on damage style and placement.

the mechanic is expected to inform a person if a plug is temporary (if they need tires)

try removing the nail. It may not have even gone all the way through. Wouldn't hurt to try since it's already been rejected.

Turns out nail was in the shoulder of the tread and not repairable. They quoted $850 for new set of 4 tires.

as i said read the latest NTSB on it

sidewall: no

shoulder: you have to know the structure of the steel belts, how many belts can be compromised (tire design in totality makes a difference in damage allowed), and the count differs depending if they are next to sidewall. however it's no longer true that count of belts damaged applies to "all tires", no longer true there are only 2 major designs, infact no longer true makers communicate with NTSB the actual testing and dimensions of what they are selling in the USA necessarily.

it's safe to say that many mechanics are lazy and don't parse NTSB and don't like being too close to "wrong" for inspection, while others ignore inspection for racial / loyalty reasons - which is why you see so many safety issues going down the road in Fairfax

I heard from a tire place that patching is now "illegal".

One guy told me that patching a side wall will ensure a blow out once weight of the car is released onto the patched tire.

Plugging is simple and cheap and is completely legal.

I also read that because tires are made differently now, that patching doesn't work .. the patch will just slip around in the tire.

Cheap Chinese tires aren't worth the buying, BTW.

Avoid any commercial tire place, Merchants, NTB, etc., or at least sift through all the other bull they try to sell you on.

If you must buy new tires, the cheapest way is online .. have them balanced and mounted at a used tire place .. which usually does a great alignment job too.

Or you can buy tires at the junk yard with good tread for even cheaper than used tires at a "used tires" place if you are hard pressed.
