Donating car to charity
Posted by: Car is done ()

I would like some advice on where/what/when/how to donate a vehicle.

I tried to sell a non running car on Craigslist to no avail. 2003 Mercedes c240 that needs a key reprogrammed, etc etc

I would like to donate it just to get it out of my driveway.

Do all of them give the same value?

Thank you !

Thanks I think?

Will I get fair market value? After I googled, some sites say you won't know value until they sell it, some will give you value when they pick it up.

Yes, donate it to a "charity" so as to subsidize their enormous executive salaries.

Most charities primarily benefit the con artists running the charity.

Tax law changed regarding this a few years ago. You have to wait to see how much they auction it for. No longer just taking blue book value.
Although you may donate your car to a certain company, it is usually the same company that you have to deal with when they tow it away.

DON'T call 1-877-kars4kids. It goes to a summer camp for rich Jewish kids whose parents can really afford to pay.

Melwood or Salvation Army are pretty good. You can cry about the religious stuff for SA all you want, but they do help drunks, drug addicts, people who lost their jobs or families whose bum fathers won't pay the bills.

If you donate a vehicle to a charity which sells the car, your deduction is limited to the price the vehicle sells for. The charity will provide you with a statement for this, and also provides a copy to the IRS. Most of them use third party car auctions to sell the vehicles. These change from time to time. You can contact the charity, find out the auction company they are currently using to sell the vehicle and see if you can find out information on the auction company's track records. That is alot of work for your typical donor whose primary interest is in getting the vehicle out of the driveway. Even then it is a crap shoot.

If the vehicle sells for less than $500 the charity is not required to provide a receipt. For those the old rules (fair market value) apply so long as you don't claim a donation of more than $500.

Another approach is to donate the vehicle to a charity which does not sell them. In that case you can deduct the fair market value. If the value is over $5,000 you do need an appraisal from a qualified appraiser. If you are donating a non-operating vehicle there are not many charities that would want it. One option might be to donate the vehicle to one of the county's schools that has an auto shop program.

^ This.

Also note that practically you only benefit to the extent of whatever percentage of the amount corresponding to your effective tax rate.

Take note of the last post. What is your bottom line to sell to a private party?

Yes it's better to sell for something less than the "tax deductible amount"
because you may not even get a dollar back in taxes depending on your total deductions .. (the minimum limit must be met to get anything back)

Yes I might ensure you get at least a couple hundred dollars cash -- the tax deduction game is a crap shoot.

When I got the car, it was part of a 2 car deal. The other car runs perfectly but has its typical "Benz issues."

Seller told me the car needs a new key to be ordered thru the dealer.
Tenants where the car is parked could use that extra spot.

Running condition value is between $2000-$3000
If i were selling it as it sits $800.

You'll be lucky to get $500 for the car as-is. I would part out the easy to remove valuable parts, it's a benz so parts are pricey and scrap it for $100 after.

I had a "bad boyfriend" of a VW Passat. I loved it and it abused me financially back. I f@ked up the Transmission fluid line and said "game over".

The schools were not helpful. The kind of car they want donate seems to be one they can resell all minty, not a practice on vehicle for learners. Plus YOU have to get the vehicle to them, they don't pick up.

Everything was a pain in the ass.

I went to NRA cars for Freedom and their 3rd party group was great. They were like small town everyday folk feel. Not some large attitudinal conglomerate. They even helped me get a new title from DMV to ease the drama.

Go to : https://www.nracarsforfreedom.com

Donate your car to them. Reduce stress...and either get your tax write off or not. Less drama is better than the pettily cash you earn. Hey a tow job alone might be $150 wasted. Get that car gone.

There are multiple articles that have been reporting for years about how Karsforkids spends half their revenue on advertising and gives 1% or less to a fellow Rabbai who operates Oorah, a religious organization that provides education via summer camps and other programs. The difference in the gap goes to expenses that I might suspect go to Rabbai Minski's kids, but I have only Google machine results which lean that direction. I'll let God determine the truth.

If this statement is wrong then this message is distorted by false reporting in the media. Here is one recent example:
