Fairfax Villa Elementary... 18 teachers LEAVING???
Posted by: Ladydeathe ()

Did you know 18 teachers are resigning at the end of the school year at Fairfax Villa? The complaints I've heard all seem to focus on the authoritarian atmosphere created by the Principal and VP. I am concerned about the effect of this current administration on the education my children will receive going forward. As parents, you should also be concerned.

Have seen this before, the Principle and Vice Principal can make a big difference within the school.

We had issues with our FCPS Elementary School Principal that was around for both kids to go through the school over 9 years, my kids are in College and the scumbag is STILL there. Overall the Principal has been though 4-5 Vice Principals and is still there to this day and people still have similar issues. Might not be as bad as the Principal at FFX Villa, but seems the bad ones never go away.

The principal and assistant principal are amazing leaders who have the best interest of children who are the center of the work they do with the staff! Instead of assuming that 18 staff members are leaving because of the administrators, assume that of the 18 some people are leaving due to retirement and relocation. Some may be leaving for different experiences, but many are leaving due to life changes. Also consider talking with the administrators to ask your questions.

They're probably leaving because of the P and VP's perhaps conservative leanings.

Only if by conservative you mean "oppressive". I posted this same inquiry to their Facebook Page. Rather than address my concerns, they deleted them.

Two to three teachers leaving, yes I can attribute that to routine attrition, retirement, etc. 18 is a HUGE red flag. Why would you not be concerned?

I am one of the teachers who is leaving. The Prinicpal and Vice Principal have created an atmosphere of repression that makes it impossible for us to continue to work there. It is not unlike working in a dictatorship where the ideas of others and points of view that don't fit in with the current agenda are dismissed. If you question their reasoning about anything, you are black listed as a trouble maker and they will actively not support you.

For some background, both Ms. Bumbrey and Ms. An both came from Eagle View as Asst. Principals. Generally, having two administrators who both originate from the same school is not standard protocol. The administration is supposed to have diverse back grounds for many reasons, cronyism not withstanding.

They would rather let good teachers walk away than to work with them and incorporate or even consider ideas other than their own. They cannot be reasoned with.

As stated above, if it is just a matter of regular attrition or one or two who aren't happy with the work environment, that would be considered normal turnover. 18 teachers leaving in protest is anything but normal. It is an active reflection on the administration's failure to work towards the common goal of educating the children vs furthering personal agendas.

The word is backgrounds, not “back grounds”. Your sentence structure and punctuation show you have very poor grammatical and spelling skills. Is it possible they just realized you are a lousy teacher and did not support having inadequate staff? There are far too many unskilled teachers that can’t be fired or rebuked for their poor performance, especially when they are represented by a union. Don’t get me wrong, I support great teachers, and I want to see them fairly compensated. Unfortunately we are not able to have the bad teachers’ property punished, so we end up with some entitled idiots at almost every school.

Anyway, have a great week everyone.

Yes, but this can easily be explained by a spell check correction.

Really? She has one word that is technically not misspelled, and you jump to the assumption she has poor grammatical and spelling skills?

There is a proverb about people who live in glass houses not throwing stones. There is no apostrophe for a plural of teachers. Your mistake cannot be attributed to spellcheck, ergo, you must simply be a dumbass.

Thank you to the teacher(s) who shared the number of departures and alleged reason. As a parent, I'm concerned.

At the least, it's apparent that the school and school system needs a trusted process in place through which teachers and other employees could convey such concerns and feel assured they will be heard and addressed by higher-level administrators if need be without fear of retaliation.

I am happy a lot of these teachers are leaving because now all of the weak teachers have been exposed because not they actually have to teach. A lot of the teacher just come to work to find a drinking buddy because they are lonely and miserable.

I worked for Mrs. Elizabeth Bumbrey when she was an school administrator at two schools. The assistant principal (KJ An) when she was a teacher at my former school. Both of these ladies are simply amazing and believe in CLT/PLC model which is newly implemented at Fairfax Villa. For example: if you teach upper elementary they sometimes switch classes. That means there might only be one teacher teaching that subject. That means you'd be using your lesson plans.

That's what we do! We do have data meetings but I create my own subject lessons since I'm the only one teaching the subject at this grade level.

We collaborate lots in our school. We have to teach the same curriculum standards but how we teach it is up to us. We do share similar resources and if someone does something fantastic and it works, we share it with the others. So we get the best out of everybody. It really depends on the culture of the school and mindset of collaborative teams.

Having to teach the same vanilla lessons as everyone is a pretty lousy situation especially for a new and enthusiastic teacher. But change can be hard for teachers and admin who have an ingrained culture. And to put things perspective, it's not the worse thing that could happen as a teacher.

Ms. An was a teacher at EVES and Ms. Bumbrey was the AP. The fact that you're defacing them online says SO much about you. I bet you're the type of teacher who blames kids when they don't learn what you taught.

Ms. Kyung Joo An was a teacher at Eagle View. She taught my daughter. I transferred her out of Ms. An's class because of the fact that she screamed at the children on a regular basis. And before the trolls here say it was because my daughter was bad, or some other troll comment, no, my daughter is very quiet and shy. She was traumatized by the screaming. She didn't understand it.

Prior to being in Ms. An's class, my daughter loved going to school. When within 3 weeks of starting school with Ms. An, she started crying at the bus. At first she wouldn't say why. But after a few days, she said, "Ms. An yells a lot." When I asked her if she yelled at her she said, "No. But she yells and makes my friends cry".

Before I arranged to move my daughter to another teacher, I mentioned my concerns to a neighbor. He said that he took his daughter out of Eagle View completely the year before because when he tried to address the problem of Ms. An with the administration, they dismissed his complaints completely.

I'm not surprised that having Ms. An and Ms. Bumbrey together as administrators is creating problems for teachers and students.

Although it can be common for a change of staff when there is a new principal, there are areas of concern. First, the number of teachers that are leaving seems very high. Second, all of the specialty teachers are leaving that include: the math teacher, the reading teacher, and the head of special education. These positions do not come around often in schools yet all three are leaving because of the administration leadership or should I say lack of leadership and respect (yes this is known). Finally, the total disregard of the teachers leaving from Ms. Bumbrey and Ms. An shows that teachers are disposable. When it was known a teacher was leaving, that teacher no longer had interactions with the administration. If you were not on board with the new administration you were considered nonexistent.

No nice farewells for this staff.

Fairfax Villa is in the Woodson pyramid. Woodson HS is going through serious concerns of student sucicides and a special task force has been created to address this issue. Now we have huge concerns with the administration at Fairfax Villa. It looks like the whole issue needs to be addressed at a higher level.
Involvement of parents is paramount

So if this is just a matter of "whiny snowflakes" or whatever, why are all of the department heads leaving for other schools? If it wasn't a matter of bad administration, why would so many department heads such as special education, math and reading be leaving along with way too many teachers? These positions are not easy to get but each found a better school and administration to work for.

And yeah, Woodson (Suicide High) is in the same pyramid. So it should be a huge concern to all parents.

Actually to those who complain, principals and assistant principals do work together frequently before coming to an under performing school.

How did the SOLS end up, as 18 while large, could be explained by that or retirements as most teachers at the Villa are older.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha Is there nothing else parents can do? Seriously, the school board? They’re not going to listen to one fucking word any parent/citizen/voter has to say. Not one. Region 5 administrators? Idk, I really don’t know. Certainly, there is something you all can think of to do to take control of your school. It is your school, you know? If not, make it yours. Don’t let these bureacratic “educators” rule over you and your children. This is America. Act like Americans. Take control. Don’t roll over.

A lot of us who teach, are transferring to jurisdictions such as Arlington or Loudon County. FCPS and their compensation package, is not what it used to be, and other school systems wisely invest in their personnel.

New teachers view FCPS as a place to only get established, before going to Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William etc. They pay more, have much better insurance and retirement options as well.

This is not to say FCPS is a bad school district, but the support from Gatehouse is minimal. Add illegal immigrants and thats extra high teacher/student ratios, principals that may or may not have their teachers back with regards to entitled parents/students. The new teachers learned about the new retirement options, which basically guarantee you will be grading exams in a walker, and going to other districts. Our health insurance has expensive customer costs, and with other munincipalities close by offering 10 to 20% higher salaries, I am much happier just like the other teachers who left the once highly regarded FCPS program.

I'm a teacher at Fairfax Villa. First, 18 teachers are not leaving. Department heads such as special education, math and reading are leaving because they were not leaders and gave no directions to their respective departments (Not following Best Practices). These positions have been replaced already with quality replacements. Change is a good thing especially when its best for the students.

Liz and An has their priorities in the right place. Its all about the students of Fairfax Villa.

Good luck to all that are moving on but its not even close to being 18 teachers. Change is a good thing.

I make an extra 10% with PWC. Less politics as well such as "best practices", which is standard government speak for "accountability." In Fairfax not always the case

You are getting closer to the truth.

This is all fallout from the 2013 redistricting.

Remember this discussion?

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/1153373.html

The school board was surprised when they learned that Fairfax Villa students were not doing as well at Woodson as those from other feeder schools. They could not acknowledge that Woodson has higher academic standards than Robinson, and the demographics at Fairfax Villa are not terrible, so they were left with no choice but to blame the instruction at Fairfax Villa.

That's why you are seeing turnover in the lead curriculum positions, and whines from the teachers who are being forced to create better real-world results from their students, not simply improved standardized test scores.

Liz Brumbrey and Kyung-Joo An, though both female minorities, appeared ready to take on the tough marching orders to make these children better prepared for middle and high school.

This is an unfinished story.

If you will all pay attention, look at the turnover at Annandale Terrace. When Garris was the principal, and before the school system could not compete with surrounding jurisdictions, the biggest issues are leadership and pay.

Why would I want to make $5,000 or more less to teach at a high ratio student/teacger school, then compared to a school in another district.

If you think I am embelleshing salary problems, high medical care costs for FCPS, go to AC Moore on any weekend. There is a high chance, the employees you see there are FCPS teachers or others in the school system.

What the hell is up with this? Same with Michaels and dog walkers. Almost all teachers.

Why is an elementary school teacher posting at 9:21 a.m. on a school day?

Probably not an FCPS educator, unless they called out sick, which is the most frightening thought for any genuine teacher.

Low pay and this fear along with SOL's, and failed principals at Gatehouse promoted when they got in trouble, another look at the FCPS jungle.

Ok, So Wrong, if you're such an expert, exactly how many teachers and dept heads are leaving?

I believe the 18 number, as Fairfax Villa's test scores and other factors, this seems a reasonable estimate. A few a year transfer, but conpeting jurisdictions and with the number of younger teachers at elementary schools jumping at better offers, a questionable team, plus FCPS politics is a recipe for such events to transpire.

Hermione! Just curious, you said you are a parent at Eagle View. Do you know for fact "who" is leaving at Fairfax Villa? How do you know the detail of this school so much? Also, what do you have to do with the Woodson pyramid? Wouldn't your child be in Fairfax hs pyramid?

Come on... Look at schools like Bren Mar Park Elementary who lost 16 teachers when a new administration arrived at the school.

The leaders(principals) set the climate for the teachers. Some lead by fear or negative intimidation and others look as failures as an opportunity to learn. "Leaders" that give positive feedback on said failures, lead you to the root of your "opportunities." The others "in charge" may be on power trips, and feel better about themselves when they debase their employees. How you treat, inspire, smile at and truly like people IS contagious. Unfortunately, the me-first mentality is the Achilles heal of many leaders. Seek first to understand, then you may be understood and can begin the journey of leading people.

The concerns the data raise are only the tip of the iceberg for what I feel is impending, based on my front-row view from the classroom trenches. Many teachers are leaving mostly in a certain part of Fairfax County Public Schools.

The number of teachers who have left specifically to teach in another state or another school district (that may not always pay higher) have already doubled so far this year from this data last year.

I have doubts that things will get better for teachers and they are treated not that well for the most part. What a shame!
