555 is a British cigarette sold by Ardath Tobacco Co. They used to have a factory in Hong Kong. They sold the cigarettes throughout Asia. They were quite popular in Viet Nam. The Amerada-Hess Station on Columbia Pike just past Carlin Springs used to sell them, because, at the time, at least, there were a lot of Vietnamese who lived in those apartments in Arlington off Carlin Springs (S. 8th Rd, especially). There were a lot of them in BXRDs and Clarendon, to. Before the rent went batshit, in fact, Clarendon was Saigon West.
Ba-Ba is 33 Beer, which was originally brewed in France, but was moved to Viet Nam when France held it as a colonial dominion.. It stayed in Saigon after the French left, but when the Americans left, the brewery was still there, but it was an on and off thing. Somebody was brewing it in France for a while. It is back on the market, but I think it's being brewed in Viet Nam, again.
