I do miss them. Around this time of year I'd be in there buying Wetsel seeds (out of Harrisonburg VA) for my garden, and buying grass seed by the pound from their wooden bins to overseed the lawn. If I needed screws or washers I'd drive past Hechingers or later Home Depot to buy the quantity I needed in bulk from Fischers. Whatever the project it seemed like they had at least one guy there who knew how to do it.

Some of us have lived here a long time and enjoy reminiscing about days long gone when this was actually a nice place to live. Fuck off if you don't care.

Mark Moseley used to have a burger place near the KMart on Elden Street in Herndon. It's a Pollo Campero now.

Did not know that. What time frame was this? I would be curious to know how many of them have attempted and failed at restaurants in this area. Lavar Arrington's didn't last.

I was fifteen once too, and I also thought my elders conversations about how things used to be were lame. As I got older I started to realize how many of the places that used to make my life great when I was younger were no longer around. You might experience the same thing one day if you ever make it out of your parents basement and start having a real life rather than a virtual one.

Anybody remember Arthur Treacher's? That place was great. I wish people would post more information about it on this forum. That would be really great. But not Long John Silver's. That would suck if people posted about that place. Truly awful fish and chips from LJS.

Can't mention any one in particular, because I don't remember, but Pet Stores seemed to be everywhere, and sold just about everything, snakes, tarantulas, boa constrictors (I remember a friend buying one for $20 in 1979).

As a matter of fact, does anyone remember reading about one of the Kennedy kids in the 60's was into falconry, amongst many other "hobbies" teenagers get into, LOL?

Anyhow, did the story go that he purchased his red-tail hawk from a pet store in Falls Church?! Back in the day, many birds of prey were considered "vermin", or something like that, in any event, did not receive the protections they do now.

Imagine that-buying a frickin hawk from a pet store.

The one at Ravensworth Pet Store had frickin dogs that you could buy, next to the Caimans...which were these little alligator type things.

That Ravensworth pet store is still there. But I don't think they sell dogs.

I remember a pet store in Springfield Mall that used to sell dogs and cats. I used to always beg my parents for a dog, but they always said no.

At least they would take me to Arthur Treacher's for hush puppies and grape Fanta to make up for it.

Remember Charles Chips (didn't they deliver to your house in a big tin?), and that thing where you would order soft drinks, and they would deliver them to your house in little "stubby" bottles in a red plastic 24 bottle holder?

All kinds of flavors?

And OK, because it is probably inevitable...did Arthur Treachers ever deliver?

You can get a few flavours of Fanta pretty much at any convenience store.

But the other 100's of flavours are harder to get. Some of them are only found in countries where they are produced. Only a few flavours were ever served at Arthur Treacher's.

Go for it! I love hearing about the old stores. How about Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton? Historic building torn down to be replaced with two Banks. The people that worked there knew more than anyone at Dicks or REI could ever know about hiking/camping/outdoors/life in general.

Good one - that jogged another similar one - Alpine Ski Shop on the other side of Miller Rd off 123 - just down from Appalacian Outfitters - which of course is also a bank!

And in that same vicinity - the entire shopping center on the corner of Hunter Mill and 123 used to be the home of the Oakton Post Office in a gravel lot.

The new home of the Oakton Post Office and Bob Evans was the former campus of Flint Hill Prep School's entire campus before it moved down the street to Jermantown/123. The upper campus on the corner of Jermantown and Oakton Road used to be Craig Van Lines (I think the other location as well).

The AT&T building at the corner of Jermantown and 123 used to be a driving range (golf).

Best! I remember that now. Thank you.

Do you also remember that store right up 29/50 that had a arch awning? I think it was some sort of crafts or landscaping business. Maybe local. I remember going there a few times, and it being really drafty inside.

Does anyone remember
Clay's Welding ?
Was on the same corner as old Oakton post office.
He used to weld up our broken minibike frames from too many jumps.
About 1969.
Almost 50 years.
I'm glad I got to live there back then.
Now it's way too crazy.
