Why is JMU So Highly Regarded?
Posted by: Vienna Man ()

Out Of all the VA Universities aside from UVA and William & Mary why is James Madison so highly regarded?

I went down there a few months ago and Harrisonburg is genuine shithole. It reminded me of the run-down post-industrial dump of a town close to where I am from in Michigan.

Off-campus also felt very white-trashy and ghetto. Plus it didn't feel very safe at night and the city is flooded with illegals. Predtory towing is a huge problem donwtown too.

Don't even get me started on the students at JMU, they were all ether party-hardy types or future Ryan Mcelveens. Then again I have a hard time seeing why anyone in their right mind would spend some of the best years of their life in Harrisonburg.

My tour in Iraq looked more appealing in comparison.

So say what you guys will about GMU. But what it offers academically and location wise is a much better value. Say what you will about the mattress stores but the Fairfax-Vienna corridor somewhat close to dc is a much better place to be then some hellhole like Harrisonburg.

You have a lot of grammatical errors in your observation. I wouldn't worry too much about college.

That school is a joke, just like Mary Washington. UMBC and Towson State are better.

It's highly regarded because so many of their girls take it in the ass.

No way you'd get that much anal at Tech or UVA.

Agreed JMU isn't really highly regarded... Nothing wrong with going there either and it's not as bad as OP makes it seem.

Of course, everyone on FFXU is a requisite intellectual and earned straight A's at top tier schools which is why they always bash schools like JMU.

I have no dog in the fight, but Richmond and Wash. & Lee are really 1st tier for being smaller liberal arts colleges.

They are generally in the top 10 nationwide for liberal arts colleges.
Kiplinger's has Wash. & Lee as the best college value.

But in reality, for most careers, going to a 'highly regarded' college is equally highly overrated.

Washington & Lee and Richmond are pretty private institutions. Hans might have been ranking va schools on account of academic pedigree of student body + funding. W&L and Richmond don't get nearly as much government funding as the uva and the like since they are private, but they are good none the less. employers generally aren't impressed with an applicant's diploma unless it comes from harvard, princton, yale etc.

Along with GMU, JMU is essentially the University of Northern Virginia.

OP was obviously rejected by JMU but accepted at GMU and is chippy about it. Therefore, stating that JMU is "highly regarded" even though most consider it decent but not outstanding comes from the perspective of someone who couldn't get in.

The OP is probably a GMU alum who has inferiority issues.

JMU is appropriately rated as a solid second tier school. It is a common backup choice for top 25% NOVA students that don't get into UVA. Because it is price competitive it is a common choice for students from the northeast who can't get into their top schools. For several years they like UVA and W&M had unofficial limits on how many students they would take from NOVA schools, so getting in from Fairfax was harder than getting into comparable second tier schools in Virginia. While their overall academic standing is second tier they have several nationally competitive programs. It is also a good school to go to if you want to become a teacher. JMU is also less racially diverse than UVA and DC area colleges which makes it more attractive to a certain group of potential students, or their parents.

Harrisonburg isn't a cultural Mecca. Neither are Charlottesville or Blacksburg and on a stand alone basis neither is Fairfax. Fairfax is only better when you take into consideration the rest of the DC area. Harrisonburg is also a "college town" which gives it a different feel than cities with a broader economic base.

No I did not go to JMU.

Harrisonburg is ok, just boring. It's kind of a backwater and even with 3 schools (JMU, EMU, Bridgewater) it isn't really a college town. Like everywhere else it has suffered from an influx of central americans and Mexicans.

Some of those are nigger schools. Nigger schools are not on any tier as they are generally equivalent to a decent middle school in terms of educational quality.

Any of these schools are good. College is to get you in the door and how you perform in the real world has more to do with yourself and your abilities than where your degree is from.

Fuck you, shitface. Who the fuck died and made you the fucking god of comedy or commentary? You must be a fucking real fun person at parties. With your glass of cheap ass California Chardonnay consumed with your little finger in the air telling everyone how boorish their jokes are just because the punchline to all of them is - your mom! So fucking what? Go to hell, asshole. Seriously, go the fuck to hell. So what if people tell mom jokes or dead baby jokes or crack wise about three guys who walk into a bar...

You erudite piece of shit. You can go suck your own dick and die choking on your own weak, watery, blood-streaked cum.

Fuck off.

Used to go down to H'burg, Bridgewater, and Weyer's Cave area a bit for work. Didn't like going there in the deep summer. Working outside, high humidity, and the smell of chicken/turkey shit sticks to you and burns your nostrils out. Went into a gas station/Subway shop one day for lunch and a guy walked in and stood in line with shit-caked Wellington boots still nice and fresh from the farm.

The only thing they have going for them is a Cook-Out which I didn't get to try, but have heard good things about the chain.

I was accepted at georgetown and all the supposed 2nd tier universities but third tier had better financial package. I left school with no debt. Gpa 4.0 so idk what you are talking about.

You were given a free ride because of your gpa. They obviously do not get students with 4.0 gpa's enrolling that often, so naturally they give every incentive to 4.0 to get them to come to the university. Who turns down Georgetown for any of those schools in the second tier? I call troll post. Georgetown with 6 figures of debt is still better than anything below the first tier of va schools.

Most of my friends had over a 3.4 gpa where I went to and a few would not pay the sky rocketing tuition offered by georgetown and the like. I would rather be 6 figures in debt for graduate school, law or med school. Why would I want to accrue 6 figures in debt for a bachelor's degree? Your pampered ass sounds very stupid.

That all depends on what field you want to get into. If you already know that you want to go to grad/law/med school, than it doesn't matter too much what and were you study undergrad. If say you want to get into finance, engineering etc. grad school is a plus, but not essential. You want to go to a school that has a good reputation in those fields, and often times, those are the ones that cost the most to attend. It is preferable to spend 100K in debt in a STEM field at a top university than it is to go to a second or third rate school and spend less in said field. Again, your choice of university and how much you spend is totally subjective. There is no shame at all in going to one of those "second tier" schools and getting a free ride. Some may prefer to go to Gtown, Tufts, UCLA etc. and spend an absurd amount of money for a degree they will use.
